What Is The Difference Between Cdma And Gsm?

Recommended Posts

Code Division Multiple Acess(CDMA) and GSM are the two technologies using in Mobile phones. Some people says that CDMA is good in its performance.I don't know the actual difference between it.please tell me what is the major differences between this and which is more good than the other..

Easy explanation: CDMA is faster than GSM because it is a third-generation (3G) technology, as opposed to GSM being a second-generation technology (2G).

Detailed explanation: Although CDMA is faster, GSM still remains as the most popular cellular technology world-wide. That's because GSM is a much more mature technology and thus has had time to grow and expand to cover and be available at just about everywhere in the world. However, CDMA is the choice technology within the United States because of its maturity from within the states, already covering most of the nation. CDMA is able to send more data and more efficiently than GSM and can accommodate more users on the frequency. There are other advantages and disadvantages to each, such as GSM having less dB loss indoors (whereas call quality with CDMA can get crappy really quickly unless repeaters are present in the building), CDMA not being able to cover as much terrain with towers because they have to be shorter to avoid interfering with each other (which makes a huge difference in hilly terrain), etc.

GSM is an EDGE mobile broadband. It is a slower mobile broadband and operates on a lower frequency than CDMA. CDMA do not use SIM that is why that unlocked handsets are usually GSM only, some unlocked handsets are able to function with CDMA, but carriers such as Sprint or Verizon do not work with it becuase they use the EV/DO mix of CDMA, so they don't need a SIM card. Verizon uses only EVDO and it doesn't support GSM becuase Verizon does not use GSM SIM Cards. 3G = CDMA and Edge is equal to GSM. If you notice, Europeans mostly have EDGE networks and their 3G rollout is based on CDMA for specific carriers, since they mostly use unlocked phones.

Hi, GSM is a mostly Euro system that was developed as a common system for all suppliers to use.  CDMA is also a 2nd Gen system that the US implemented at first.  WCDMA (wideBand CDMA, aka UMTS aka 3G) is not the same as the other 2 and uses a new air interface.

EDGE is Enhanced Data GSM Evolution and uses the same air interface as GSM but utilises multiple channels to give greater bandwidth for data.  EDGE 2 is close to release,  but for data services 3G has take this to a new level.

Basic 3G service is 384kb dowmload. This increases with HSDPA (High Speed Downlink Packet Access)  this can puch the Download speeds to 14.4 Mb/s.  There is also HSUPA (you can guess that one)  that pushed Upload speeds to 5 Mb/s.  Then coming in the nest 6 - 8 months is HSPA+ (they have dropped the Upload and Download as this includes both) this will finally pust 3G data to 46 Mb/s DL and 18 ish for the Upload.

But to add a new one that is also coming.  4G or LTE (Long Term Evolution)  this is the next step and will be 100+ Mb/s to a mobile device.

The main differences of CDMA and GSM are,

1.CDMA (Code Division Multiple Access)after digitizing data, spreads it out over the entire bandwidth available to it.GSM (Global System for Mobile communication) is a digital mobile telephone system that is widely used around the world .

2.In CDMA network, there is one physical channel and a special code for every device in the coverage network. In GSM network, every cell has a corresponding network tower, which serves the mobile phones in that cellular area.

3.Handset network service is specific in CDMA ,but in GSM it is SIM specific, User has option to select handset of his choice ,sometime it will locked with a particular network contract for a particular periods, but we can remove it by getting the unlocking service from an provider like Unlock-Zone.com .

4.CDMA offers more efficient use of an analog transmission because it allows greater frequency reuse, as well as increasing battery life, improving the rate of dropped calls, and offering far greater security than GSM/TDMA.GSM is the dominant technology used around the globe and is available in more than 100 countries. It is the standard for communication for most of Asia and Europe.

5.GSM is a very straight forward standard, whereas, CDMA is somewhat complicated.

According to me gsm is better as it is globally accepted and used except some countries. You can change the sim cards whenever you like and you put that in any other phone you like. For data transfers it offers networks like GPRS, EDGE, and the latest HSDPA [3g] Technologies....
