Updating The Categories In The Computer Forum

I was looking at the computer forum a moment ago and though since it is becoming more popular that it should be broken down some more into its own subcategories so as to keep it more organize

I can't see a massive difference between security and anti-virus software. To me it would make sense to have them in the same category, unless there is some glaring difference I have missed? Otherwise I think the others would be popular and would help to organise things a bit more.

Operating Systems

-Windows (9x/Me, NT, 2000, XP, Vista, Server)

-Linux/Unix

-Oracle

-Mac

-Novell

-Other

I was just thinking the exact same thing :P Linux and Mac have started to be discussed more and it would make sense to separate the topics. All too often topics make no mention of what operating system they are talking about so this would certainly help.

Hardware

-Computer Builds ( This forum is all about display builds for peoples computers, and also members seeking opinions on builds they plan to purchase)

-Maintenance

-How-to/Troubleshooting

Computer Security Issues & Exploits

-Current Viruses/Hacking News

-Patches

-Prevention

Again, I can certainly see those sections working out and helping organise the topics we have. Just my thoughts but I'd say they're pretty good suggestions.

Well the difference between the security software and the anti-virus soft is somewhat simple to explain so bear with me :P. With anti-virus software they just go after worms, viruses, trojans ect etc. With security software your dealing with firewalls, cryptography, parental control, spyware, adware, stuff like that. Although they work within the same package they do different things and also netwrok security is a whole different then home security, and hopefully that might clear some things up on it.

One way to look at it is: The Security Issues put up a fence and the Anti-virus is the Gatekeeper.I think the Suggested Framework is worthy of Admins consideration. Further to the recommendations above:Move the Database sub-forum into Programming? Combine the networking, Telecom and Wireless stuff into a single Sub-Forum?

In the software section, what is an example of desktop software? Also, I think adding something for 2D and 3D art/design, ect. would be good. For example, something like Photoshop and Blender wouldn't fit into any of the categories you proposed.

This sounds great. It'll keep a lot of topics from making it in and cluttering the General Talk category. :P Maybe we could possibly add a White Hat Hacking section? It would be kind of neat to train and/or inspire a bunch of people to be network security specialists... I know I wouldn't mind learning a thing or two. :D Maybe a category under Hardware for new hardware technologies and/or products to keep us updated on the latest and greatest?

These appear to be great suggestions, a little more division helps keeps things organized however I don't think many view the difference between Anti-Virus and Security software large enough to tell the difference when they go to make a post. In general they both protect the computer from some sort of intruding object but of course I haven't really paid attention to many of the posts either and don't know whether there is such an abundance of posts referring to this.
