What Way Does Your Toilet Flush? Counter-Clockwise or Clockwise?

Recommended Posts

It has actually been researched and found that in the northern hemisphere toilets flush counterclockwise and in the southern hemisphere they flush clockwise. This is due to the spin of the Earth. As for me, my toilet flushes counterclockwise so you can guess where I'm from.

I find this interesting, it is a question that can be answered in a number of ways.First off, I just went to the toilet (yeah just to check what way), and my toilet flushes down, not to the left or to the right.Second, i went to the sink, and it drained counterclockwise. But that is only one sink, ill try a few more and see what i come up with.

Mine flushes straight down, the sink doesn't seem to spin so it goes straight down too. But i can tell you that when I spin (give the sink a jump start) the sink for example Anticlockwise it seems to want to go the other way

Yes I know that it is different for the different hemispheres or something like that. The scary thing is me and my friends were discussing this. Creepy. But the question I want answered is why they are different? Hmm the world is a very wierd place is it not?

Ok i have an experiment that will clear this up.

If you take a tennis ball,

on the upper side, draw a little arrow, just off center

On the lower side draw another little arrow just off center facing the same way.

Poke a Skewer through the centers, and then look at the tennis ball from the side, spinng it one way and look at the arrows that are pointing thew same way, if you look at the topside it goes one way if you look at the bottom side it goes the other way. Its just your point of view that makes the difference

Since this is in the My Theories forum, I'm going to think of a toilet that's "a theory" :).Actually, it would be pretty useful if your toilets worked liked the airplane vacuum toilets. It would most definitely save a lot of water. It may be a bit noisy, but I think it's harder for it to become plugged up. And also, there won't be any splashing upwards of water which is disgusting and has germs. All in all, the airplane toilets really rock... but I think i need noise canceling headphones to use them, because they are so loud. On the airplane, I would just close the door immediately before the toilet flushes, since it's just too loud.A disadvantage to this would be that there might be some "leftovers" (yuck) since there aren't any water to clean it up. And also, it's going to be really "dry". But at least it won't splash up each time something "falls".

Counter-Clockwise for me.but I don't think this result means anything. because my toilets flush has a water flush hole at the left side in the bottom.

Coriolis EffectWhat Way Does Your Toilet Flush?Geography does NOT matter!! The design of the sink/toilet/basin is the only the thing that matters (unless it is extraordinarily symmetrical in which case the current of the water matters most). The worst is when someone promulgates a myth by saying "it has actually been researched and found that..." when they have no idea what they are talking about and learn their Science from the Simpsons.-reply by Not Jim Bob

All i'll say is that Earth is orbiting the Sun at around 200,000 km's a second. Crazy stuff does happen. :PI'm in the southern hemisphere, I don't really care which way it actually spins, I'm not dirty B)I'm not sure on the rotating speed of earth, I wonder what speed the water spins at ?????
