Creating A Text Mmorpg?

Recommended Posts

Anyone looking to make a game? Well Gamers-Fusion is a widely used open source project hosted by https://sourceforge.net/ its got all the nesicary things to start the game, though it does have many flaws to start. But thats the fun part, as i started learning PHP as i started a game using this.

The file you will want to download is the version 2.5, which is the most current version that works. The beta v3 doesnt work.

https://sourceforge.net/projects/gamers-fusion/files/ <---location of files.

No offense or anything, but i think that text rpg's are VERY stupid, like its so boring.... Just go buy a book or a "Choose your own adventure" story and have fun.

If you want a good text game, go to a MUD or a MOO. Theres a MUD at http://www.slothmud.org/wp/ and a moo at http://www.scripters.be/rg-erdr.php?_rpo=t. You can also access the MOO on MSN. Just add MOO@Scripters.be. The diffrence between a MOO and a MUD is this: On a MOO you have a quota of say 100 bytes. You can create objects and program them to do things on command. Thats why I prefer MOO. However a MUD is more like a RPG. You cant create objects, you need to buy them. Its more of an attack and monster thing, a MUD. Xedos. ;)

Thanks. I think I am going to try it out. I was looking for someone to make a game for me that knew pretty good PHP (not me, lol) and I think I'll give this one a shot. Maybe I can just use the sorce that I make and make my own additions as I see fit.

<_>

NOT... ENOUGH... TIME... TO... MAKE... ONE... FROM.... SCRATCH....

Hey all. Sorry about raising an old topic here but I ran into this in Google and couldn't resist.

I already have a fully functioning MMORPG text adventure called Exploring Azoundria on my site. I am looking for people to help with it if anyone here is interested.

We're currently working on version 3 and accepting new applications:

Wow I didn't know Gamers-Fusion still even existed. I started with that a loooooong time ago when it had a HUUUUUGE amount of flaws. It helped me learn PHP a lot by fixing all the flaws. If you're really going to make a text MMORPG you should either start with a package and work from there. Or start completely clean, which is the long way of course. Either way if you need help with it, ask here on the forum and I'm sure you'll be helped :DEDIT:By the way, some think text MMORPG's are lame, but I played one which has over 100.000 players about now...

100k players?Creating A Text Mmorpg?

Hi Lightning 100k players is really a lot. About my codes, well I started with an "unbugged" clone, you know that a thing like that doesn't exist lol and took me 4 months to get the complete idea of what I was making, right now the game is 43 days old, just got 250 players and is running nice.

80% of the codes are done by me and that other 20% has been checked line by line so there are no problems or backdoors.

Only problem I got is the time out with the server (I can't afford a dedicated server right now) that makes 1 bug if it laggs while saving but without that it is running really nice.

In the end I hope to get a good knowledge about PHP to make anything that a work can ask in the future.

Thanks for the heads up.

@icedragon:  Text rpg's have a certain elegance.  It can get annoying playing a graphical rpg with anything less than full-3d dynamicly-lit displays.  I hate games that show the "interesting" world in flat sprites.  On top of that, text rpg's can do tricks that other games (or Choose Your Own Adventure books, for that matter) can't:  hidden secrets, interactive descriptions, requirements to keep track of things, etc.  The original Advent/Colossal Cave is an example of how the  text-based format can be used for some neat tricks.

The other advantage is that text-based can be a ton easier, especially if you want a customized or unique product. You don't need to learn 3d graphics or buy an engine to do that, or spend weeks on concept art and graphic creation. Their simpler design also makes them a lot simpler to find and eliminate glitches.

A text based MMORPG needs to have some sort of a niche to it. I prefer the way that dynamic and interactive MMORPG's work over fully text-based (like Zork, if I got the idea right). But, a MMORPG doesn't need fancy crap like Flash to be good, but it does make a difference.

I do not know if it is possible for an independent developer to create a text based massively multiplayer online role playing game (MMORPG) because not too many people would be interested for the following reasons.Firstly, most kids these days want something that is realistic. Think graphics. Think 3D characters. Sure, you can put a story into a text based game, but I am not too sure of how many people would play it.Secondly, you have to consider that text based massively multiplayer have been done and is very passe. Do you remember Mafia Wars? Yes, that was a text based massively multiplayer online role playing game. There are Mafia Wars clones out there too, from those replicating the exact same concept to those applying the same gaming engine to a different theme, such as Vampires. If you do want to implement a text based massively multiplayer online role playing game, your best bet would be to take a legacy game that already exists and has its copyright expired so you can build upon the story line and hope to draw some of the old fans. Either that, or find a theme that you can build upon by getting the necessary permissions from the people with the rights to a character or a theme and go with it.Just because a game is a text based massively multiplayer online role playing game does not mean that you cannot have pictures - or does it? It depends on how you define text-based because you can have a game running over text messaging on cellular networks, or you can have an Adobe Flash game running over the web or on Android tablets displaying pictures while the rest of the interaction is solely text based.
