special 0 Report post Posted September 23, 2006 Well this is in general a complain to free hosts, not about this 1 keep that in mind havent used it yet In general most free hosts are resellers or rairly use there own servers. Some full with adds even with simply html support full of spam. Now I host my own msql mysql php etc, for my projects on dictated servers. And I know that its heavy to host if its used a lot. But html I really hate a host if he advertises even on html pages I really think that is so retarded. And yust a way of making money for that person not helping his community out. Also sometimes support, I use difrent hosts. Heres a funny 1 I e-mail the host of that website because he had no forum. Ye my site dusent display when I upload it. He says you removed the www folder. I said it dident even create it first bug. Then 2 days after downtimes, ftp never works anymore. Am lucky I even uploaded it all before everything went down. I got a site running that cant be edited cinda freaky aye? Maild him about it but he dident respound really anoying.Whats your general experience with hosts over the years? I hate html only hosts nowadays there so profit only. darran 0 Report post Posted September 23, 2006 Well if we are talking about serious hosting, I have only been involved twice, Digital Pulse and Xisto. Digital Pulse is reasonably good, it is actually paid hosting but was given a free account as the owner is a friend of mine. The only problem with it was that it was down a tad too many times, DNS problems recently finally convinced me to make a switch to Xisto. Hosts which posts advertisements in your HTML pages are a no no. Spoils the layout on a large scale and it can't be any good for your site
terminal2k 0 Report post Posted September 23, 2006 well Xisto has been a pretty good host in my opinion. i've not had many problems here. I used to use some free hosting places with ads on your site but it makes it look tacky and unprofessional and you don't usually get as good a deal as you get here
Brian Gillingham 0 Report post Posted September 24, 2006 well Xisto has been a pretty good host in my opinion. i've not had many problems here. I used to use some free hosting places with ads on your site but it makes it look tacky and unprofessional and you don't usually get as good a deal as you get hereI will agree with this - Xisto hasn't seemed to ever time-out on me like another free host that I had. That host had 170 other sites running, but grew too quickly I feel ... large chunks of time without any service at times.I replaced that other free host with a virtual all in one dedicated server. That host rocks! I have as much bandwidth and space as the near future could ever demand.I think that you should be able to get a good feel for how good any particular free host really is - before you sign up. I would think that some research should be done as to the host's support, "customer satisfaction". Another important factor would be the host's server setup - and how much "horse-power" their machine has (eg: 4 CPU, pentium 4). You should be able to get some good information by looking up the host's domain on whois.
peo 0 Report post Posted September 24, 2006 I fully agree to you my brotha. Im very unhappy with all of these different hosts. they promise one thing but apparantly you get another. My thing i want to assure is that maybe pepol dont happen to like this very much. I mean they dont profit on it very much so i think this in other words helps them get more traffic in site. A nice traffic means nice ads means nice cash . this maybe also make other peoples who want to purchase another of to buy this verty exclusive thing. I personally thing that - sorry my english is very very bad but i think that there is a point in all this. we must not fight with it I think this Xisto is very nice hostes and forum post is not very much to ask for. Also happy people can be found here so gratz every one for this host!!!!
Panzer 0 Report post Posted September 24, 2006 Lots of free hosts really annoying me being so 'commercial'. Xisto was so much more down to Earth and its pretty good :)I like the forum idea, being able to express myself and ask questions to other people while having a free top level hosting account. patrickh123 0 Report post Posted September 24, 2006 (edited) I've tried many different free hosting services over the year, but I honestly haven't been satisfied with any of them. Most of them are only free for a certain amount of time and have forced advertisements. From what I've seen so far, Xisto looks really kewl -- I mean a free hosting service with no advertisements ... and all you have to do is stay active on the forums! Pretty good deal if you ask me... Edited September 24, 2006 by patrickh123 (see edit history)
arnz 0 Report post Posted September 25, 2006 I'd had to say that the older free hosts over the years ie Geocities, tripod, freeservers, etc has indeed gone downhill to an extent where they are now forcing banners and popups on their sites.Where theres a downside, better providers such as Xisto come along with more decent "premium-level" features and a fairer system to "earn" the privilege to free "premium" hosting with all the necessary extras such as ftp, sql, sub-domains and so forth. Keep up the good work Xisto
JasperIk 0 Report post Posted September 25, 2006 The host i had before, was...okay at first, but then it was like atleast once a week it would be down, especially the mysql, it was ALWAYS down, and that was what i ran my board on, so obviously it was a pain in the neck. Now that i have had Trap, i dont actually recall it being down, [it might have been once or twise, but my internet connection was decieving occasionally] unless it was an error on my part. But ive only used two hosts so far.
zyzzyvette 0 Report post Posted October 9, 2006 I find it extremely annoying when hosts are vague about supported features (php etc), so that I only find out it does not support something I need once I have already put a lot of work into a project. Then I just have to go try another and hope it works ok... what a waste of time eh?
brandice 0 Report post Posted October 13, 2006 Trap 17 had been the best free hosting experience I've had, by far. There was another really good one, I don't remember what it was called, but you didn't have to post to get hosting and it gave you pretty much the same deal as we have here. It was too good to be true, though, as those sorts of sites usually pack up in the middle of the night and go offline without an explaination to anyone. That happened to me twice befor I got here.I've also signed up for lots of free space with that place ads on your sites. Tripod's service is good, and they are ok if you've just got a plain html site. You can't get to tricky there. it's just having the top 1/4 of your page taken up by ads and toolbars that is unacceptable. Oh! and the fact that you can't hotlink isn't good. Many of the smaller places that place ads on your page that I've tried don't offer an awful lot of options for what you can do, either.
CrazyRob 0 Report post Posted October 14, 2006 i do offer free hosting adide from paid hosting on seperate dedicated servers. Free hosting is somtimes really hard to manage as i have around 200 accounts on one server i keep having to upgrade them toi stop them going down and keeping in with my 100% network uptime. I agree most webhosts are quite scanky by limiting you to like 1 SQL database ect and make you force ads on your site and you dont even chose where to put them. many of them dont even offer cPanel i only know a select bunch including me and Xisto who ofer full features. The only thing i dont allow and the same as trap is shell as i just simply dont trust people - as kid may decide to have a go at shel and mess up the enitre server. I agree with you its so anoying haveing a forced banner or popups displayed. But trap 17 is probabaly the closest you will find to paid hosting, (there is ahplace but there forums are boring). HTML hosts usually also support php despite what they say as if they didnt support php then there control panels ect would not work.
Madkat-Z 0 Report post Posted October 14, 2006 I agree with most people. Trap 17 is a good free web host. However, I'm not that fond of having to worry about having enough credits to keep my site up and running, but its a small price to pay considering all of my previous free webhosts...AngelFire-Ads and not enough space50megs- Was great until they went banner ad happy, without even saying a peep to there members.AwardSpace- Had a hidden exception. You can't use forums on you pages. So Trap 17 is kind of like the gold in the fools gold for me, at least for now.
Kioku 0 Report post Posted October 14, 2006 Geocities, Brinkster, and such are okay for small projects, but their ads or text at the bottom can prove annoying and disrupt layouts that you have planned. Trust me. It's okay if you're hosting something small, but an actual site would require alot more thought put forth. Brinkster was okay for me for a while, until I decided it was time to pack up and find a new host.Xisto is the best free host, hands down. I'm very glad and thankful that Xisto offers the services you'd have to pay for with other hosts for free of all things, with no crap that makes the internet annoying like ads, popups, and such. If that's not enough to convince anyone, I'd say the ability to actually talk to mods or admins to get help with any technical issues is pretty sweet, too. Sharn 0 Report post Posted October 14, 2006 Trap17 owns them all. Many many paid hosts can't say they have half the features and ease of use as Xisto. You can't beat the speed, reliability and Fantastico. Plus the MySql DBs and FTP accounts and many other things you are allowed by the tens. (Not that you would ever need that many, but....)I've had some scary free host experiences. Like Awardspace, their Cpanel bites. Bad. And their php support is horrible. I use it only for my own quick php testing and stuff. Byethost was fairly slow and had those annoying ads everywhere - other than that, they are quite gracious and give great support and features. It is kinda tough having to keep up your credits - but it is definitely worth it, for the amazing features.
