Life Before Google

Recommended Posts

When I first started using the Internet (about more than ten years ago) I must admit that Yahoo and Excite were the first search engines/directories I used. Not too long after that I used Alta Vista. Then around late 1999/early 2000 a friend of mine mentioned about a site called Google...so I checked it out and...well, that's what I've been using since then.

i barely remember a time when i was without google. I must have been pretty young. (too lazy to calculate actual age). I remember using yahoo and askjeeves until my uncle told me that google was much better. I didnt listen to him (after all, yahoo was my home page, my email inbox and news source (or maybe it wasnt, i cant remember). now i dont use anything besides google.... I still remember though, the first few weeks of using askjeeves i would always ask a question, till i realized it was pointless

I wasn't a big internet user back then before google came along. But I remember using Yahoo and that was about all I knew. But now, I only use google but when I can't find something I'll just try other sites where aren't even as accurate as google? Not so sure but anyhow. I can't recall anything besides yahoo.

Before Google, I used Kartoo, Altavista, MetaCrawler, Yahoo and AskJeevesI still use these search engines also with the new MSN Live search for research because Google is worth for researching as it limits the number of results for each search query. :P

I did searches on a variety of search engines. They were mainly altavista... yahoo and msn. They were the best at that time. But google revolutionized how search engine works...

Before Google, I was using altavista. However, I've only managed to use it less than twenty times back then (I wasn't an Internet junkie back then, much less a real search engine user) Three years later, when I started becoming addicted to the Internet (porn, actually. It was so novel back then :P), it only seemed natural to use Google, since it's what everyone's talking about; I think it was already used as a verb back then.

Yeah back in my noob days I used mainly yahoo, and msn and few lesser known search engines like dog pile, ask jeeves. However, whats really disturbing is how a search engine like google who entered the stock market is worth $600 a share, thats unheard of especially for companies like microsoft and Apple who been doing this for over 30 years now. Well yeah google is doing other programming things and of course trying ot take over the the internet advertisement arena. It should be interesting what google will be like 10 years from now when they celebrate their 20th anniversary, if they last that long.

Here is my two-cents as well as my voice is particularly extracted from two books that are totally focused on Google.Well, Google was created out of pure intention to build a better search where search quality is at it's highest and results will be more relevant than any other search engines. However, Larry and Page didn't want to put advertisements on the search result pages, instead they want them to be organic listings rather than paid. So, they stuck to licensing their technology to companies like AOL and Yahoo. After a while, a John Batelle told them that they cannot last out long in this way so someone gave them the idea of seperate the page into two margins where one is for paid listings and another for organic results. They did succeed, and along with the dot com bubble boom, their stock rose damn high and that's how their market share as 51% came to come about. By the way, this happened because, i think, i don't want to take out my book (wasting strength) they conserved that money.

Before Google, i either used MSN, Yahoo, Yahooligans, Ask Jeeves and a few other i can't remember. When i use to use Ask Jeeves they never answered my questions and always led me to kiddy websites. I once typed: 'how to make a for dummies book for dummies' and it came up with: 'how to make cake.' Yahooligans and Yahoo aren't really pictured as a search engine because they have too many things on their home page. Google is plain simple and you get right to the search, which is the important part. MSN was ok, but they had a lot of sponsored links/site and i think they are using "live search" or something, need to check. But i use Google before any other search engine, sometimes i don't get what i am looking for but i is still better than alot of other search engines out there.

Life without Google...? I bet there wasn't even internet out, or computers. If there was, there was probably a really old search engine on the internet, just called something like "Search Engine" or whatever lol. Thank God people came up with the idea of Google.

I don't know if it was before Google existed, because I haven't been online for all that long (maybe 10 years myself... I'm not really sure.) But I know that I started out using Yahoo... Even had the email account with them. But that was while I was learning how to use the computer during the limited time were were online in computer class in high school. Sometime after I got the internet at home was when I found out about Google. Now I do most of my stuff with Google, including the email and several other features that they allow for. I just like it so much better :)

Megaspider. I think AskJeeves.ElectricMonk was absolutely the bomb because you could enter queries in the form of a question...I wonder if any of these are still around? BRB, I'm gonna go look.I'm back. Well, after googling electric monk (how histerical is that) the page as I knew it does not seem to exist.Do any of you remember the days before wiki? How about Encarta online. It makes me shiver.
