You may need to check how many USB devices you've got plugged in. USB has two limits, power and bandwidth. If you are using too many USB devices at once you may run out of bandwidth on your bus or power to one or all of your devices. These failures can be intermittant or consistant. USB hubs do not increase the amount of power or bandwidth that you have available on your bus. They just spread it out to more devices. Devices that pull a lot of bandwidth are items like usb network cards, usb hard drives, wireless mice/keyboard devices, etc... Try taking other items off your usb ports and see what you get.For all I know you've already tried this. I also had a problem once with my external USB drive getting power to be detected properly and it was the drive, my manufacturer had to replace it.andrescasta

A new drive without a partition cannot be assigned a drive letter in Windows XP. You have to partition it first. You can do this in Start / Control Panel / Administrative Tools / Computer Management / Disk Management /I just happen to have a side-business selling external drives online, so I know how common this problem is with most people that put together their own external drives. http://forums.xisto.com/no_longer_exists/ For this reason, I always partition and format my external drives for customers before I send them out so they don't complain. It's a common mistake, and hopefully this will solve your problem. If creating a new partition does not assign a letter to your drive, then the enclosure is probably defective. Another method of creating a partition is using Partition Magic or physically removing the drive from the enclsoure and installing it in your system.andrescasta

I'm going to purchase a laptop to take to work with me. It will have wireless capability and I was so excited that I will be able to access internet when things slow down at work. But, guess what, when I talked to the IT people about this they told me their wireless is encrypted and I have to have a key number to get into the network. I think this sucks!!!! LOL Very disappointing. Is there anyway to get around this? I'm not trying to do anything illegal, just surf the net!!! Would appreciate any suggestions or warnings (LOL)andrescasta

Kservice I didnt think you were talking down at all. I just wanted to clear up any miscommunication that I didnt have an inkling about the DC theory. Setup and implementation is another story...but I am sure I can handle it.I may even run Citrix to make it even more simplistic in the end as an admin. Also I am reading that Citrix will do load balancing and other neat and nifty admin functions. So this is something I am considering throwing into the mix.The user groups will not be large. Probably a group for Admins that will contain 2 users. A group for Exec Staff which will contain around 10-20 users. A group for Administrative/Accounting Staff which will also contain around 10 users. A group for Clinical Staff which would make up the bulk of the rest of the users. Possibly another group or two...no more than that though.I also have done some checking into the way our UNIX system application logs its users and the IP issue wont be an issue...even b4 testing the thin clients. I also talked with someone this morning that is gonna let me borrow a couple of thin clients to test with b4 I make up my mind. Its just that this "person" only sales the new WYSE terminals....and not the refurbs. He will sell me them for the same price as what I can buy new ones for.....BUT I can get them refurb'd with the same warranty as new for 100.00 a pop cheaper. Would pay to just buy 5 extras for the shelf in case I have one go bad...and still be cheaper overall.andrescasta

My biggest concerns are what are the limitations of the domain over a workgroup. I know exactly how the theory of both work. I just have had no experience adminning a domain.....so I want to know if there are any limitations of the domain where you arent on the workgroup side of things.My biggest concern of this is that every dummy terminal will show the same IP of the domain controller. So this may be an issue that cant be overcome. 80% of the workstations will have to connect to a Unix system and log in. This unix system logs IP's and only allows 1 connection per IP. This can be overcome...but due to security issues there is no way I will set the connection per IP any higher.Sooooooo saying that above may crap out the whole idea. I have an IBM e-series server running dual processors and a RAID5 config (Win Serv 2k)....this would be the domain controller(main) and perhaps the only one since it is a RAID5 config on the HD's. However I may build a 2ndary DC on a regular PC with the same OS.....not sure if I will do that or not.ANyway.....I think I will buy a couple of the thin clients and do some testing with it to see if I can work around the Unix connection issue.andrescasta

I thought I would start a thread to see what you guys think of the two technologies.I am contemplating going from 5 workgroups/subnets to one or possible 3 central domains on our network consisting of around 130 PC's. I know that a domain is alot easier to control/administer once its set up. Its just this is the way this network was set up when I was hired and I have been dealing with it "as-is".It sure would be nice to only worry about 1 server and all of its user groups rather than 130 individual PC's. I have also found some good deals on thin clients by WYSE that would be perfect for the remote desktop connections on the domain controller. If I would go this route I would of course RAID5 the hard drives in the server so IF one fails....productivity wouldnt be lost.I just dont have as much experience with domains as I do workgroups.....so what is the "real world" Pro/Con of domains over workgroups.Thanks!andrescasta

You said the internet connection is on the XP machine. Does this mean you are using the XP machine as an access point ( in other words just from wireless card to wireless card) in an adhoc network? If so you need to make sure in your wireless cards properties you specify an adhoc infustructure. Also if your internet connection is connected to the XP machine you have to turn on ICS. In your adaptor properties on the xp machine look for the option to share the connection. Otherwise you'll never get the 98 machine to surf. If you had the connection on the 98 machine before and moved it to the XP machine make sure you shut off ICS on the 98 machine. Could you please give us more info on your network setup?andrescasta

Recieved a replacement notebook pc for my Compaq that died (under extended warranty). PC is HP ze 4145, AthlonXP 1800+ 512 mB RAM 40 gB HD. Tried installing my Linksys Wirless G pc card. OS locked up during driver install. Had to power down to get out from t he lock up. On cold reboot with wireless card inserted, I get a boot loop where XP just starts then reboots, Never even make it to the welcome screen. If I pop out the card, boots fine. HAve worked with tech support form linksys for hours to no avail and tech support from teh replacemetn company no help either. Have tried a new PC card and no difference. just got another notebook today in case it was a hardware problem (same exact model) and the same issues. IF I install the drivers with Task Manager up, CPU usage shoots to 100% during driver install and stays there. Cycles all used by "system" (not system idle process). As soon as I pop out the card, CPU usage drops to 2-6% ANy ideas?

Well in my case , i am selling my desktop to buy a laptop, and i took this decision for a couple of reasons:1. In my house i have a wi-fi router so i will be connected in every place.2. I am student of compuer languages, so it will be a really useful tool to me.3. I also like to play games, like C&C generals, SIMS (no so heavy like DOOM3) so with a 1.4 GHZ proccesor and 512MB ram, it's ok. First I want to say that if i take the assistant way, one of the computers take the ip 169.254.XXX.XXX so that means that the host is inaccessible.yestarday i download Timbuktu, a software to share folder, and control the other pc by the network, y try it in others computer with static ip and work great, when i installed in pc: A and B, not worked, so I put a static ip in each one:Desktop (-_-192.168.0.1255.255.255.0Notebook:(A) (SP2 firewall OFF)192.168.0.2255.255.255.0Then I try to ping A from B, (B from A too) and the screen say:Host inaccessible Host inaccessible Host inaccessible Host inaccessible The cable is tested in other computers and work ok, I not put all my hands in the notebook computer because is a job computer, but it have Wifi support, so I will invesigate it in deeper. andrescasta

Hello, i have the common problem in XP, Setting up a Network to share folders, internet, etc, etc.... I searched with google and i found a lot of suggestion to fix this problem, but didn't work to me, Let see: I have to make the network for 2 computers /*The cable is Cross-over and the Work Group is the same ex: WORKGROUP.*/ Computer A: Notebook with XP SP2 (Without 3rd part firewall) Computer B: A Desktop with a fresh installation of XP with SP1(Without 3rd part firewall) First i tried the wizard to do the connection, In B I selected that This computer connect directly to internet i restarted and this one had the ip: 192.168.0.1 / 255.255.255.0 Then in the computer A, I selected that this computer connect with a Gateway, etc, , ,restarte,,,,but A didn't take the dinamically ip (ex: 192.168.0.XXX) It taked 169.XXX.XXX.XXX / 255.255.0.0 So, i disable the XP firewall , and press in the repair button, but nothing happends, the same problem, it taked 169.XXX.XXX.XXX / 255.255.0.0 So, i try putting in A a static ip like this 192.168.0.2 /255.255.255.0 / GW: 192.168.0.1 With this setting the i ping both computers and work ok, and i see the other computer in My Network Sites, but when i try to get inside a share folder, this message appear: "Workgroup Name is not accessible. You may not have permission to use this network resource." Hello, this topic could be in other subforums, but i want to talk about the hardware that is needed to stay in the line of new games, I know that with a computer we can do more thinks like a console (ps2, xbox, etc), but some people like me have a computer for only 2 things,1. Internet2. GamesSo, thinking in the cost of building a game ready computer, I think that at the moment (thinking that 64bit software is some far) is better to buy a console to play games, like a PS2 or the expected PS3, and a budget computer to other things, this way is cheaper, and i think better, because for some years you will have a game machine without virus/out to date components/bad drivers/ OS incompatibility/etc etc.....I read the PS3 spec in the games subforums, it will have a 3.0GHZ proccesor, also I read that the PS2 have a 300mhz and 4mb ram but the games of it could be compared with computer games (ex: PES4, etc).Please tell me your opinion, but i don't want to discuss that a pc is better because with it you can do more things ......bla..bla...bla....Andrescasta

I am wanting to move a complete RedHat 8 install from one box to another. Current box is a IBM server (SCSI drives etc etc). Not sure of the new box spec yet (it may only be temporary) so may have normal IDE drives (though i'd guess having SCSI also would be much easier) While yes i could load up a fresh install and bring everything over, i am no exactly Linuxperienced a great deal and the box has some prorietary software (locally produced and rare) that i KNOW i could never get up and running again (the customer wants to avoid the software house as they are moving away etc). Any suggestions would be great. Ive though maybe load up a fresh RH 8 install (have to find such an old distro first) and copy over folders of relevance (though im not to certain here what i should pull over). Another is perhaps a ghost of the existing system, but i guess it would be unlikely this would boot on a new/different setup? Thanksandrescasta

Hey guys. Its the end of summer and im heading back to school and trying to figure out what im doing for my computer for the year. I am currently running a barton @ 2.2ghz but have been thinking about jumping to a64s which leads to a new mobo, vid card, and basically a new computer. Are these new purchases worth it? If I went to a64, i would go pciE, and so on and the prices just keep adding up. I really only play CSS so maybe a ATI card is a good idea and I could get rid of my 6600gt as source players a mini bit better on ATI.... I really dont mind waiting if there are better options. It is just that the jump to A64 requires many things to fall in place. any suggestions? Andrescasta

My 2 cents: I think this case is do or die for AMD. If they win, at the very least they will get much better prospects of gaining marketshare and winning OEM deals, even though this will likely happen in a period where Intel could have some very competitive parts again (conroe/meron). AMD *could* also be awarded some healthy compensations, which wouldn't hurt its stock price I guess.. but there is a catch; if AMD looses, the future looks exceptionally poor for them. Expect Intel to turn on the thumbscrews until it bleeds, counter sew them, and push them out almost all markets save perhaps the DIY market and white box vendors. Personally, I might to take a gamble on it though. from what I read, it seems it will be exceptionally hard for Intel to win this one. This quote if from aces where I asked about this trial: 1&2 seem overly obvious, the first one being a simple fact, the second one proven by the Japanese investigation if nothing else. The third one... not sure how to interprete it, but if I apply common sense rather than reading it literally, I'd say shouldn't be too hard to prove that either. In short: I expect AMD to win (75/25 odds), and to gain substantially from it. But I do see a possibility of AMD losing BIG time, so its still a gamble. Don't bet your house on it, but if you have some money you don't need in the next year or two, why not give it a try ? BTW, also note the EU is investigating intels conduct, and if i'm not mistaken will finish its investigations long before the US trial will take place. If the EU determines intel abused its position, expect that to have a double effect of: -possibly increasing AMD stock instantly -providing evidence AMD can use in the US lawsuit. just my semi random thoughts, I will not accept liability if you loose your entire fortune on AMD stocks andrescasta

I'm wondering if you can help. If I'm looking at a new DVD drive what would you recommend? Don't worry about price range, I'll save up if I have to. Also, is there a reason to upgrade my sound card? It's at the latest an '02 model. I'm at work now so I can't check it. But sound on the latest games seems to work fine, aside from an occasional skip. Actually here's a good question. I want to play F.E.A.R. when it comes out. Bad. It looks cool. I realize that the tech specs for it haven't been released as far as I know, but would you be able to make a guess as to what I'd need to play it well. I remember most of my specs.AMD Athlon XP 1600+ processor.256 MB RAMGeForce FX 5200 with 128 MB RAM (I think that is what the 128 means)It's an '02 model. If i am not wrong, the Intel Centrino work slower but could make more MIPS (Million Instructions Per Second)(Like AthlonXP with P4) than the Others Intel mobile processor, And also the speed of the processor can vary in relation with the task that it need to do, so these features, give a better solution for notebook, because the battery duration is longer, and the performance seems to be the same. Hello, i saw that a brand called EOLITE are selling a low cost notebook +-U$S 500, with a via c3 1.2ghz, 40gb hd, 512mb, wi-fi, DVD, etc, i found that this processor have the lowest voltage consumption in the planet(so the battery life is longer), Also i know that the performance(in desktop applications) of this processor is as good as the Celeron, In multimedia or games i don't know, but i think that is slower than the celeron.Any of you know something about this notebooks????Andrescasta

You are right, in future reviews i going to put this info, about the Nr70, it is discontinued, so you can buy it on ebay, or somewhere like that, the price is about U$S150, and you could compare this device with a High End Palm (like Tungsten T3) this is because the low end palms like Zire 31 / 71/ 72 not have a Hires+ 320 by 480 screen or a Hardware Keyboard or the excellet audio quality, the only thing that these palms are better than the NR70 is that support PALM OS 5 so, also support all the applications for this OS. I don't compare palms with pocketpc because, the palmOS is more stable, faster and easier than the Windows Mobile. Think that when this model was launched the street price was U$S600. Good Luck!! I have this: -------------------------------------------- AMD 3000+ 450W PSU MGE NINJA Case 1024 DDR Corsair Ram GeForce 6800GT 2x 80GB Western Digital 7200RPM Hard Drives Windows XP Professional -------------------------------------------- The computer worked perfectly fine for over 5 months. The computer was set-up using ONLY the drivers form the CDs provided with the parts for my computer. After 5 months of a perfectly functioning computer. The start-up time jumped from 10 seconds loading windows XP (The loading bar when you start-up did 4 passes from one end to the other before loading, now took on the range from 7-20). After that happened, my music started to lock up (It sounded like when you try playing music using over 100% of system resources). Games then started to become laggy, lock up, all in the same sequence with the sounds lagging. I had thought this was Spy-Ware so I ran a check with a HUGE amount of Anti-Spyware and Anti-Virus programs. Nothing worked. I had done a COMPLETE format. The computer worked perfectly for about a week. I just then moved the computer from my mothers house to my fathers house. Apon connecting it and turning it on, it came back. It was Wednesday, so I tried RESTORING it back to tuesday when it worked fine. To my amazement, it worked perfectly again. It worked for 24 hours until the next day when I turned it on again, it came back! I did another restore and it worked. I had continued this process for about 5 days, giving me the time I wanted to play music and play games. Now restoring takes litterally over an hour (Just like the slow start-up times, loading anything takes a million times longer to load). When trying to copy a file while listening to music, thats when the most distinct problem of lag appears, or burning a CD, as I said though, this is on all programs and applications. I had since then, after I formatted and installed all of the drivers provided on the CD (The drivers that worked perfectly for 5+ months). The problem came back, and I figured updating to the latest drivers would help. It didn't. I don't know what the problem could be. I have nothing Illegal (Limewire/Kazaa/360 Share/WinMX/Morpheaus/etc.) Nothing that was put back into my system that could cause this problem again. As I said, I did a complete (Not quick) format and the problem occurs again and again. I don't know what to do anymore. Thanks for the help Andrescasta

"We announced we were going to do tabbed browsing when we released the final version last month?and here it is." The upgrade will allow users to open multiple sites, each in different windows with a tab at the top, directly underneath the menu bar?with the intention of making it easier to switch among pages. The functionality also will let users save "routines" in an unlimited number of tabs, which have been dubbed "My Tabs." So, a user who routinely checks a weather site, two news sites and the family photo album can save each URL in a tab, and every time that person opens a browser, those sites will automatically appear in the tabs.
