The last couple days have been... interesting... (as in the curse - may you live in interesting times). One of our PCs keeps loosing the network. Internet works fine, I can ping the router, server, other PC's, DNS servers, websites, etc., AOL (Hissss) works fine, IE too. But it can't see the domain or any server shares. It could Wed., but not Thurs or today. Unattach and reattach cables, repair connections, reboot, reassign to the domain, etc., all to no avail. Also tried both DHCP and manual addressing. System Restore to Wed AM's restore point and its fine (McAffee needed updating, but that's ok) for the day. Get in the next AM, same problem. Restore to Wed's restore point and update McAffee, and its ok. Came back later, same problem again. Since I'm going on vacation next week, I created a new restore point (while it was working) for the user to use in case it happens while I'm gone, and that restore point doesn't work, but Wed's still does. When it's not working, the basic error message is the same 'Incorrect Function'. The rest depends on whether I'm clicking a link to the share, joining the domain, mapping a drive letter, etc. "Domain is not accessible. You might not have permission to... Incorrect function" "The mapped network drive could not be created because the following error has occurred: The network location cannot be reached" "Your computer could not be joined to the domain because the following error has occurred: Incorrect function" After I come back, I will probably reformat/reinstall XP, but if anyone has any ideas before then, I'd love to hear them.

Ok, i think that today the best way is dual boot because it is a lot of work try things in linux and then see that in windows works better......., now tell me something, i have a DELL D600 laptop (Centrino P M 1.6, 512 RAM, HD40 GB, RADEON 9000, Wifi intel 2100), i going to create a partition of 4 GB for linux and i think to install Debian Distribution and then compile the 2.6.14 kernel (because it have support for centrino systems). All this is ok, or there is a better way??Please give me your opinion.....

Registry Tools And Defragging Tools...best Ones?
andrescasta replied to andrescasta's topic in Software
i will try it, what about Diskeeper?? -
Here's a list of some cleaning tools I find useful: registry cleaning = Registry First Aid http://www.rosecitysoftware.com/ (not free) defrag = voptXP http://www.goldenbow.com/index.html (not free) Lavasoft Ad-Aware PLus = removes spywear (donation expected) Install a Hosts file to shield against future spywear = http://winhelp2002.mvps.org/hosts.htm (free) Don't worry about editing the Hosts file. Just download the new one about every 2 weeks. No more spybots! Install the 2 simple utilities to both Lock and Unlock the Hosts file so no spywear can secretly alter it = http://winhelp2002.mvps.org/hostsfaq.htm (free) In addition to Windows Disk Cleanup I also use McAfee Quick Clean Lite, but Windows Disk Cleanup is pretty much o.k. Hope some of these ideas are useful to you! They work real well for me. Tell me about other useful software........

I am preparing to migrate from Windows to Linux. Off course I still need to be able to do the things with Linux that I now do with Windows. Main issue today: gaming, what are my options? All of my games are Windows-based with some exceptions that actually have a native Linux installer. But I still want to be able to play all my Windows-based games when I have switched to Linux. There are a few options to solve this "problem". I have read about Wine, which works good for most Windows applications, but doesn't seem to do too good with gaming. There is Cedega, formerly known as WineX, which emulates the API's used by DirectX. Most games should run good - some even great - on it. At least that is what the developer says. The thing is I have not found that many user comments/reviews about it. Another thing is that you'll have to pay for it. Not that I am too cheap to spent money on a good solution, but I would like to see what I am buying - a demo or some good reviews/comments wouldn't hurt. Then there is the CPU emulator solution (VMWare, Plex86) and run Windows from it, but this will cost performance (and in case of VMWare; money) because it's an OS in an OS. And loss of performance is not something we want when we're gaming, right? Dual-boot is not an option - this will cost a lot of time booting between OS's and HDD space for installing several OS's. Aside from that it's too much trouble maintaining two OS'sWell, please tell me what you think about all this.....

I have an A8N-E board, with an Athlon 64 X2 4200+ processor and thermalright XP-120 heatsink and panaflo 120mm fan... vid card is a geforce 6600GT PCI-e. the case is a 'navigator-x' from Aspire and it came with a 500w power supply (its see through and glows ) i put in the CPU, put arctic silver on it, put on the heatsink, put on the fan. put in the vid card, hooked up the hard drive (a maxtor SATA drive), and plugged in the DVD+RW drive. i press the power button and everything lights up. all the fans (like 5 of them) start spinning, PS fan is spinning, cpu fan is spinning, vid card and mobo fans are spinning...dvd drive opens up, i make out the sound of the HD powering up...but no beeps, nothing on the monitor. and pressing power again doesn't turn it off. any ideas? i got the board from newegg, i ordered it monday. what do you recommend i do to trouble shoot it? i have another system here with an antec 430w power supply, but no replacement socket939 processors, or PCI-e video card/motherboards. it had two connectors for power for the motherboard. a 24-pin connector and a 4 ping connector. i plugged them both in. i am about to try taking out the mobo and powering it up outside of the case, after taking off and re-installing the CPU. if that fails, what next? is it possible for the CPU to be fried? or would it just be the mobo that i would have to RMA with newegg... and if the mobo is the weak link here, what kind should i get? i don't think getting another one of these shoddy Asus products is too tempting at the moment. (i took all precautions, grounded myself on the case before i touched the thing)

Pentium M Differences: 1.73ghz? 1.86? 2.1?
andrescasta replied to andrescasta's topic in Hardware Workshop
OK, the reason because i prefer de 2.0ghz is because i have a Dell D600 with a Pentium M 1.6 (Banias), the problem of this laptop is the video card, a RADEON 9000(CPU 220) with 32Mb(400 DDR) dedicated, so probably is better to buy a laptop with a fastest and with more memory video card?? The complete spec of my system so you could recommend to me the best upgrade:512 MB RAMHD 40 GBCDRW/DVDWIFI 11mbpsBroadcom 1gigabitSXGA(max 1400x1050) 14"The battery life playing a dvd is 110 minutesThanks for the reply's -
I have a: Dell d600 Petium M 1.6 XP PROATI RADEON 9000Saturday, I downloaded Age of Empires III trial. After installing, I ran the program and an error message popped up stating that I didn't have the necessary processor speed to run the game. It said my processor was running at around 500 Mhz (a high reading was just below 700 Mhz and a low reading was just above 300 Mhz). I thought that because it was a trial, they hadn't worked out the kinks. Yesterday, a friend lent me Star Wars Republic Comando and I received the same message. I called Dell support and after running a couple of tests, the gentleman I spoke to said, that I was running at my 1.6Ghz and there was nothing he could do. I've run several other games (Doom 3, Knights of the Old Republic, Far Cry) with no problems. What is it about AoE III and SW Republic Comando that is preventing me from playing these games? Are there processes running in Media Edition that are causing conflicts?

Hi. Trying to decide how fast a chip (Pentium M) to buy for my next notebook. The HP I'm looking at goes up to 2.13 GHz. I can afford to go with a 2.0 GHz, but can save $100 if I go with a 1.86. I can save more if I go with a 1.73. Any advice on Pentium M CPU speed? Any reason I should not buy the fastest one I can afford...without buying _the_ fastest (with the biggest price premium)? My experience tells me it's not worth the money to buy the _fastest_ CPU, but to go with a step down from the fastest. I'd appreciate any thoughts on this. Thanks.

I going to talk only of 2 computers,( But remember that there is a w98 client that in it the remote priner works ok!) I reinstalled the driver in the server machine( W98) and in the WXP client, now both drivers are in the same version. The network work fine, i can browse the HD of the server from the client, I installed the printer in the client in two ways, one with the xp assistant (That detect a Remote Printer) and without it (with EPSON drivers). In W98 The printer is shared!! But remote printing didnĀ“t work. Also i connected the printer directly via LPT to the xp machine, and it worked whit the print test page. The only solution is to connect the printer to an XP machine, the problem is that the xp machine is a laptop :-( , and the W98 machine is very old to run XP. andrescasta

Hi.. I know someone here has the answer to this..this group always does!!I just recently installed Bellsouth DSL with a Westell Wirespeed Modem. I added a Belkin Wireless G router so I could surf wirelessly on my laptop. Here's the problem...The laptop works great..full speed, etc. However, the desktop..which is hardwired through ethernet ports..will not let me load certain pages. The most annoying is that I can log onto my yahoo email, and even get my yahoo email home page, but it will not load my inbox. I'm also having problems going over two pages deep in Ebay. The pages that will not load on the desktop WILL load on the laptop. I've tried empting the caches in both Mozilla and IE (the web page not loading occurs in both browsers). I've also tinkered with dropping the firewalls and lowering security settings. I?ve also made sure that all the firmware was updated. Anyone have any ideas? Any suggestions would be appreciated!!! Thanks in advance!!andrescasta

Had a PS1, it was crap, bought a PS2, it was crap, can't afford a PSP or an XBox360 (yet ). I must admit consoles are coming on in terms of capabilities and with the next gen consoles (PS3 and XB360) the cost/performance ratio does seem to be a lot better but there is just something about playing a game on a PC that for me makes the whole experience that much more enjoyable. Maybe if I had an XB360/PS3, a 42" HD flat screen, a 7.1 surround sound system and a decent broadband link then I might think differently but until I can afford a setup like this (probably never) I will probably stick with upgrading my PC piece by piece when I have some spare cash. Until then HL2 is about the limit of my system, games like FEAR and BF2 are just that little bit too much for my system to handle which is a *darn* shame.andrescasta

I started playing BF2 about a month ago. Ever since then I?ve been playing it almost every day, but I?ve been getting the ?There is a problem with you connection? way too many times or sometimes I get kicked out of the server for having a high ping. I have been reading a lot trying to find a solution for this, but no luck. There seems to be some information regarding this, but I haven?t really seen too many good solutions/recommendations for the problem. I have my main computer and my son?s computer wired to a Netgear WGR614v2 (just got a new D-Link 4300 router last night). My ISP is AOL (never had any mayor problems with AOL). His computer is a 4/5 year Gateway PC. I have tried the following so far: I?ve checked both computers for virus/spyware they?re both clean. My son had Kazaa installed, but I uninstalled it so, both computers don?t have any sharing software. I updated Punkbuster I?ve turned off all firewalls or do different combinations and no luck. I?ve re-installed BF2 / patch 1.03. I opened BF2 ports in router (not with new router ? just got it last night). I?ve re-booted router & modem. One thing is for sure, when my son is using his computer, I would definitely get the connection problem. When I get the connection problem, I unplug my son?s computer and as soon as I do, the problem goes away. I installed my new D-Link 4300 router last night updated to new firmware, but I kept having the same problems as with my Netgear router. I tried a few quick settings on the router, but didn?t solve problem. I?ll try more tonight. Do you guys have any solution or recommendations for these issues. andrescasta

My Dad's company has some old laptops that they are giving the salesmen. These things are pretty old. I think they have 64mb ram and 300-400mhz processors with 5gb hardrives. Because of the low ram, they loaded Windows 98 on them. I suggested Windows 2000 Pro, but whatever. Two of them are having problems though. They don't want to spend money for new ones, and certain software is registered to those machines. Plus, they want them all to have the same laptop for troubleshooting. He brought one home today to try and fix. I am not good with old systems and haven't touched Win98 in years. The "errors" are very minor. It is just a simple notification of some missing files on startup. Seems like a driver or registry issue maybe. From what I could tell, it functions fine. Might as well fix them though. Here are the exact errors: After Win98 screen, black screen saying: vredir.vxd is missing or something, press any key. Then, it comes up again with dfs.vxd After continuing to the desktop, a window pops up before it loads. It says: dynamic link or library is missing msnp32.dll Some error with Windows network below it Any ideas on how to get rid of these or what is causing them. I appreciate any help. Lol, I guess I can give you a gmail account or something for helping.andrescasta

Guys right now I have two Ide drives running at 7200 rpm. I use my pc for mostly gaming and I know that faster drives are only benefitial to those who use certain programs. Now if i was to get a SCSI drive of 15k or 10k would that be faster for my games? Would it make my pc generally faster. I know that the IDE and SATA II and SATA are supposed to be faster but no drive actually takes use of their bandwith capabilities. So its down to RPM's of the drive which make it faster. Which Drive could I get which has the most rpm's and is quite cheap too? Size dosent matter as long as its bigger than 40gb but doesnt have to be large like 300gb. 40-50 gb is fine.andrescasta

I did not set up this PIX, and I'm sure there is some cleanup that needs to be done. However, in my previous post, I posted the static and the mail server is in there: static (inside, outside) x.x.x.8 192.168.1.35 netmask 255.255.255.255 0 0 The show access-list is freaking huge, but I'll post it up if it will help andrescasta

We have an IP block of x.x.x.0 - x.x.x.15 PIX is set up with the x.x.x.14 address. Mail server set up as x.x.x.8 address. We have OWA, and the line in the PIX that allows this is access-list acl_out permit tcp any host x.x.x.8 eq https This also allows for our PocketPC phones to connect to Exchange ActiveSync. The globals are set up as global (outside) 1 x.x.x.9-x.x.x.13 global (outside) 1 x.x.x.14 We get errors when sending emails to servers that do not allow allow emails to be sent without a reverse DNS entry. When I look up the mail server, I get: Answer: x.x.x.8 PTR record: mail.company.com. However, in the SMTP logs of people we can't send to we see this: 3264 00:03:33.748 Got: <EHLO mail.company.com> 3264 00:03:33.779 Event - No PTR record for <x.x.x.14>, rejecting 3264 00:03:33.779 message <554 No SMTP service here> Now, my question is, do I need to fix something in our router, PIX, or ISP DNS server? andrescasta

Is Sony Hdrhc1 Camcorder Really That Good?
andrescasta replied to kservice's topic in Science and Technology
HDV 1080i is more than twice the lines horizontally and twice the width vertically. That is about 4 times the picture information over DV. If you have 4 times more info, what do you think The gotcha here is editing. New editors for Sony, Adobe, Avid, and others now do HDV. The system requirements are high, so to edit, you may need to look at your computer. Not sure about this camera, but the 3 chip HDV Sony's allow you to record in standard DV too or export as DV. Another consideration is that for the interim, you will need to either write your edited product to DVHS, a format that will only play on a PC (or HTPC), or downconvert to MPEG-2 for DVD. If you have a plan on how to play it back, you can then find a fit for software. And when you find software that fits, you can then determine what you may need to do for any computer upgrades, if any, that will help. andrescasta -

Please Help! Problem Installing Winxp Pro
andrescasta replied to andrescasta's topic in Operating Systems
I had all my other drives removed when i installed the, or tried to install, the OS. I only have the DVD drive, and the raptor hooked up. I have double checked my BIOS to make sure it is the right drive it boots to, and that it shows up as the correct drive. I have reset the BIOS many times. (reset to default in BIOS and by removing the battery and letting it reset) I have a feeling it is something with the Sata and the MB not communicating proberly. Would love to go out and buy a replacement part if i just knew what it is i need. If this keeps up much longer, i will most likely replace the MB, but it for sure will not be a Asus any more.
