In addition to spybot and ad-aware use HiJackThis! I find that combination of the three works the best. it takes a bit of care and patience with hijackThis but I think its the most effective. you can find a lot of HiJackThis tutorials on the web. downlaod & initial instructions & how to analyze the log this one has some good info & links too

awesome! there is one major deciding factor for how much technology will grow, which is capitalism/economics. if there is a market for something like 6Ghz computer, and there is, we will have one. a lot of times people are too afraid of technologies and the societies have to catch up to their own technolgoies. this is definantly the case with technology that provides convinience at the cost of security. there is a lot of technolgy already available that many consider to be a breach of personal security and are unwilling to use. like the use of computer chips and databases to store information about yourself for easy purchases, tracking things, &c. wheter machine/computer can reach human level depends very much on what level we are on. we don't really know the answer to this, so how can we know whether computers can reach this? are we more than simply logical beings? or are we just computing highly complex logical operations in our brains (or wherever our CPU is) and therefore completly predictable if we can only reach that sophistication of calculations...? these are very important philosophical questions!

I have a similar one, similar price too. Its an IntelliMouse I think. yay! very tiny! i love it. but it is not wireless like I used to have because I hate constantly buying tiny batteries yep. my previous mouse was a bit bigger than what I have now, which was still smaller than a regular mouse, and it was a ball mouse which really sucked becuase I hated cleaning it. and another bad thing about them is that static affects them too. so my mouse was constantly being all jerky and stuff. bad. scroll wheel is also a must. who can live w/o scroll wheel? here it is http://forums.xisto.com/no_longer_exists/

yes. very interesting. I was wondering what was meant by safe here too. if you mean safe as in viruses and stuff (which you obviously do) then I really see your point but as in getting caught for piracy or something like that, bitTorrent is not 'safe' at all, especially if you are offering the content. there is no hiding like in p2p which work in non centeralized networks... or so I've read so with bitTorrent, even "trackerless" you are still out in the open, so to speak... or am I wrong?

Very Handy! I'm always tempted to want to buy these kinds of things from bookstores. it seems silly to buy cheat sheets, but its soo worth it not to have to make them yourself.... I think anyway

I have a toshiba laptop and I have no complaints, in fact from what I've heard people are always pretty happy with them. someone told me that toshiba was on the top of a list along with apple of computers that needed the least tech support. they are comparibly cheaper as well, you can get more speed, memory, HD space for your $.what I would do is get information from a site like pcmag.com does a lot of the comparisons for you.apple is always on the top of such lists tho.

I love "how stuff works" articlesthanks for this, it is really easy to understand. I can send this link to some of my friends. I am really surprised at how many people don't wanna change what they use just because they are used to it. wheter or not it work best for them or not. *shrug* but knowing more about "stuff" helps a lot!

maybe so... I know I would have a mac if my trusty toshiba/winXP compy wasn't soo much cheaper. I have to be pracitcal I would love a Mac, but since I really don't know much about them, and what I know about Linux is very impressive (and noble) I voted for Linux. and... since the price is right on Linux I think I'll make a change towrads in in the near future

I didn't know that! I read your post and went looking for info at CNN.com http://forums.xisto.com/no_longer_exists/ there's an article if anyone wants to read. that is pretty neat, I have to say...

I do know of some people myself with very good reasons to drop out of High School. High School is *one* system of learning and to assume that *everyone* will fit and learn well in that one system is just illogical. a person can be completly off the game (cos the school system is like a jumping through hoops game) in High School and be perfectly succesful in college because college is very diferent than High school. or some can be star students in High school and be completly lost in college (i know some of those too). the only thing you need to be succesfull is self motivation. I am getting a bit old too, I am 23 and still a Jr. in college. its just taking me long. no big deal. had a couple years off. had some slow semesters. etc. nobody cares how old you are in college...

this is true, windows media player does seem to slow things down much more. I also use winamp 5. what I love about it most is the internet radio. it probably helps when streaming that it doesn't take as much memory as windows media. i don't like streaming w/ windows media. I definanlty don't like windows media 9 or 10 or whatever its on now because you have to download so much junk with it. does anyone like to make skins for your media players? I've tried it for both winamp and WMP. its fun!

Agree with that. definantly. I love Minesweeper! :-D I get addicted to it every time I start playing it again (must beat my time). anyway, interesting note. if anyone knows... JK Rowling the author of the Harry Potter books is a Minesweeper addict too. she boasts about her best times on her website and says that its her substitute activity to smoking that she must do in writing breaks... trivia for you besides Rowling I really never hear anyone talk about minesweeper. i think the game is under appreciated

I don't know all that much about it, but as far as I understand if you use wireless internet you really should update to SP2 because it enables you to have greater security. especially if you have a home network on a wireless router. and as far as SP2 interfering with your Firewall, that is because SP2 has a firewall but you can disalble it or adjust the settings accordingly so that it wont interfere. I use Norton, for ex, and my lil manual that comes with it covers how to deal with that... windows has its problems anyway... I don't see a reason not to update to SP2.

Can You Go Back To High School? at 34....?
ana replied to gorgeouscreature's topic in General Discussion
wow, I've never heard of an "adult high school". *shrug* In a psych class I learned that supposedly one's High School graduation is one of the important milestones of one's life. with out it it seems a bit like you never finished somethng important. I've heard of many that in order to get that sense of accomplishment in life have obtained their GED and gone to college or a technical program. get a degree! a BA or an associates, or tech school of some kind; somethng that will give you a ceremony and a piece of paper (and will certainly help in career/being a good example for ur kids). -
wow, I actually think that is really cool. and usefull. because supposedly if you are trying to do a good search for something it is good to use more than one search engine (so I have been told at school) and I am much too lazy for that and only use google (which always has the best results imo). I think I will really use this page do you think it was changed to Twingine.com because they're not allowed to use the logo/name/likeness ??

that's funny you say you only have gmail to be trendy I actually like gmail very much, but I don't actually use it very much mostly because its such a hassle to give ppl your new addy (and I switch so much that i'm afraid people will get angry w/ me if I gave them a *new* one ) so I am beginning to think of it that way too as for Yahoo and hotmail, I like yahoo better. my Hotmail one doesn't work as well with firefox browser.

I pretty much just use CSS, that's the first thing I leared (besides obviously basic HTML). and now I am learning PHP and it is awesome! I love it. I don't know why I waited so long to get into it.I suppose learning some javascript will the the next essential thing to learn more about. I've only done really minor stuff with it (like a pop up window and such...)I think using talbes is indespensible, even when using CSS. it makes everything look nice and neat. whenever I use images and don't want the dumb save icon to come up on like an IE browser I just put it as the background in a table (and sites like IMDB.com use tables cleverly to keep ppl from grabing their images )

as a global communications resource, I think the internert has not yet lived up to its potential. More information to more people is definantly a good thing. The important thing as everybody seems to agree is discerning what is good/credible information and what is not. But that's an issue in any case. Its just so much more visible on the internet with so many thousands (millions? *shrug*) getting their facts and information from personal blogs each having a biased opinion. on the other hand internet is free from corporate control. if the regular news media is "bought" out by whatever corporation supports them, that is not the problem with some independent sources that can publish and get readers incredibly cheaply with the internet! a very good thing. but like I was saying, whether or not a source is reliable or not is an issue whatever form it takes. Your teachers, for example, may also be unreliable sources of information.

I really do believe the enviroment is a pretty big issue right now. More than one person said "gas prices" which more than anything is directly tied to the environment. not in the least because of largely contributing to (deadly) pollution.but the way that our current population uses up energy resourses incerdibly wastefully with the luxury of not having to know how expensive that wastefullness is (particularily to the environment), is pretty alarming. I definantly think the raise in gas prices is a good thing. It is prompting people to try to conserve that resource by buying hybrid cars or investing money into alternate sources of energy.does anybody know about ANWR? congress approved oil drilling to be done in the arctic National Wildlife Refuge! it is a devistating loss for the environment for a measly short supply of oil. but we are desprate for it... :-( the benefits of drilling there don't nearly compensate for the draw backs(also it is a fact that the united states uses about 90% of the world's energy resourses.)

thanks for all your input! I really am pretty much happy with FileZilla, but when a friend asked me what I would recommend I didn't feel right recomending it not having tried many others. it is nice to see that there is a lot of FileZilla fans I might try some others though. I do think that freeware and open source are the best way to go tho!

Hello, I am completely new to this forum; it is seeming a bit overwhelming at the moment, so any help or advice would be appreciated.Right now I really want people's opinions about FTP programs. Is there one that is clearly better than the others? Is there one that is more user friendly, or most popular? Please let me know your opinions.I use FileZilla right now for no other reason than it is pretty much the first one I came across that was completely free and fully functional for what I needed (which is only uploading websites *shrug*). I've also used WinSCP3 for secure file transfer, but I hardly use that. (which brings up another question for a newbie like me, when would you need to use SFTP?)anyway, Hope to hear your comments soon
