You can also get cancer from nothing at all, by the way. It's not really a matter of understanding the disease to its fullest extent... cancer is caused by mutations... While these may be provoked, they also occur completely by chance...

Can Anyone Recommend A Light Linux Distro?
pedro-kun replied to saitunes's topic in Operating Systems
I use Arch Linux myself... I just don't know how comfortable saitunes is with Linux, and that's basically why I didn't recommend Arch in the first place Installing and configuring Arch is not the same as installing and configuring Ubuntu. Maintaining both systems is also a bit different. -
Can Anyone Recommend A Light Linux Distro?
pedro-kun replied to saitunes's topic in Operating Systems
@linx89: Didn't you mean Xubuntu instead? I find Kubuntu a bit heavy on older PCs. Also, BasicLinux running on a 2.2 Kernel... we already have 2.6 now, and the oldest "supported" is the 2.4 series @Saint_Michael: Isn't Mint a spinoff of Ubuntu Linux? Anything that uses a full GNOME installation is heavy (the same goes for KDE, obviously). That said, the XFCE edition of Mint can be given a shot, but so can Xubuntu. @saitunes: I would keep Puppy, if lightweightness is key! Try Damn Small Linux, too... If, for some reason you want to install Ubuntu, you can MAKE it lightweight by installing the server edition. That means that you will decide which packages to install, and do it all manually. If this isn't what you really want, then please just go ahead and use Puppy or Damn Small. Ubuntu is not meant for an emulator It all depends on what kind of mastery you have in Linux, you know? If you know your system well, and are comfortable in the command line, "which distro" is not a real issue, because you can easily tweak what gets installed and what doesn't. If there are any more doubts, just reply -
Hello, I'm planning on writing a "book" about how to create websites in a correct and no-nonsense fashion. However, I was hoping to produce high-quality PS (PDF) output as well as an online version, for quick access to information... So, up until now I have been using LaTeX only, but I'm willing to try DocBook... I just don't like the syntax very much (too much tags to open and close). Despite that, I would like to know what your opinions are regarding this matter. Given that I want both PDF and HTML output, which should I use? When you answer, please state the reasons why you think I should trust your opinion... convince me

I Need A Review On My Website Review me please
pedro-kun replied to dcskataboy's topic in Websites and Web Designing
I've been reviewing the website for a while... Pros: Well, I'm not gonna be all soft and hold your hand on this. I'm not going to be too rough, though (as some people have already been) So, there are no pros, except for the time it takes to load and the simplicity. But even the loading time can be bad; just take a look at the "Doors" and "Locks" sections. Cons (or, in other words, what I would change in your website): 1. The static black and white is not bad. It's just badly used. However, I would at least throw in some shades of gray in it. Links could have other colors than the default ones... 2. What's with the centered left menu? And even if you want it centered, you don't need to use a <center> tag for each item. Also, you should wrap those up in a list (<ul> and <li> tags) 3. Don't separate the several "areas" your website has... It seems they are floating and they shouldn't. It is a page, a solid single page, and not three pieces of paper wandering around 4. The markup (code) behind your site is awful, from unecessary center tags to countless <br>'s and <p>'s where you should have other more meaningful tags like lists and such. 5. The images. They shouldn't be scanned images. Either you make vector images or you take a photo of the actual items. The scanned images available now lack contrast and are too big. Maybe you should ask for help Perhaps some people wouldn't mind converting that to vector style 6. The contacts section is useful, but it somehow doesn't integrate with the site... Maybe because you made a blank page for contacts only 7. The domain name is BIG. This is a HUGE name lol! People will have difficulty remembering it 8. The clock and the hit counter look very unprofessional. Really Basically, you need to revamp everything. I can give you some pointers, if you want... besides, your whole site can be redone quite quickly, while teaching you valuable concepts about why you should re-think some parts of it. If you need any help, just PM me. Anyway, I just picked up your site, and fiddled a bit with the CSS (like 5minutes) and got this: I think it's a little bit more pleasant to the eye... however, you're the one who decides. Anyway, if you need help (except for the vectoring part, lol), I'm just a PM away -
Problem Getting Text To Align With Different Resolutions
pedro-kun replied to Shaunery's topic in Programming
Why not google for W3Schools and learn some CSS basics over there? Then, you'll be able to go over to google again and search for specific details on how to align things the way you want them to be aligned. I'm not trying to simply redirect you to another place, I'm just encouraging you to discover CSS for yourself... for example, you'd be able to quickly grasp the code galexcd left there ;)Using tables is not encouraged as it is semantically incorrect (besides other things).galexcd's suggestion is correct, by the way... But it will only render correctly if the page is on Standards-Compliance mode... So, try to go with standards compliant code, or else the page may become a mess -
These anomalies start because some neuronal pathways weren't activated when they were supposed to, or were activated when they weren't supposed to be active. Many things can make this happen, we do not know for sure how it all begins. Accessory pathways may exist in the brain... if that happens, data can proceed through such pathways and indeed reach the memory before it reaches the visual cortex, as already mentioned. The incorrect storage theory functions in somewhat the same way, I think. We don't know what makes memories be stored in the wrong "compartment", however. If these things happen too often, you can probably check with your doctor, he'll know what to do a lot better than anyone here at the forum, I guess. I think that people with cerebral fibrosis (which may be the result of a previous infarction) may possess abnormal electrical activities in the brain, which may lead to deja vu, perhaps... but I guess it more easily leads to other things such as hallucinations than to deja vu. I'm not very into this, actually. Oh!, and it's not a vision, because things do happen/have happened. Or at least they've been dreamed about PS.: I'm not using any bibliographic source for these answers... I'm mainly recalling a "debate" we had at school with our teacher (neurosurgeon). So, much of this is bound to be somewhat incorrect. But not that much, I hope

So, i'd basically recommend you install OpenOffice, foobar2000, mpc (media player classic), CCCP (combined community codec pack), and camstudio, a free desktop-recording software... I don't really know if camstudio records games... never tried that. You can always try fraps for that (not free).

As I already said somewhere here in the forum... D?j? Vu is an anomaly of our brain :)There are several theories which try to explain the reasons for this to happen, but the answer still eludes us.Some say that d?j? vu experiences result from memories which are incorrectly stored in the long term memory section, giving you the feeling that they had already happened before you actually experience them. Another explanation states that memories can follow alternate pathways in the brain, making it possible for them to be stored even before the visual information of the event gets to the visual cortices. Because of that, when you get to "see" ou "experience" something, that memory has in fact already been stored in your brain, and you'll get that familiar feeling, of course. These are, however, nothing more than theories. They are, nevertheless, the explanations I like the most :pBesides these ones, there's also that explanation which defines D?j? Vu as a recalled experiencie... Like when you dream about something (experience it) and are then put through a similar situation in the real world. It's kinda cool

Unless you spend all day long on a phone, you won't have problems with it. Some time ago, there was some danger, but nowadays it's pretty low, i guess

You just don't drag and drop php. PHP is a programming language, not a simple markup language like html. So, if you really want to use PHP, you'll have to code it. just download something like notepad++ and keep http://php.net/ in a tab for quick reference

I couldn't simply not answer this thread, lol... It's perhaps a little bit odd that the thread quickly deviated from the original subject to simply talk about advantages and disadvantages of both genders. This matter (which one is better) is a stupid question. And when I say stupid, it's like someone said it already... it's not ignorant stupidity, it is indeed worthless and thoughtless stupidity. Firstly, yes, men may (and should) also have monthly cycles like women. However, not the same hormones are affected... so, no period for men, and that's it. Many kinds of other (mostly unknown) cycles may exist, however. As for the other questions... It's really hard to see that many people still think both sexes are equal or even that much different. The truth is somewhere in between. So, while we all have equal *rights*, we do not have equal *capabilities*. The issue regarding brain size vs brain efficiency is actually true. Also, "just because it's bigger, it doesn't mean it's better"? LOL... of course it is, only not *always*. What I mean is that there are tasks that women may find difficult which typically require interaction over several areas of the brain. Men have greater communication between these cortices, which helps motor coordination, for example. Women however are more efficient at some "repetitive" tasks - tasks which request high processing power from one single region of the brain... That's just the way the brain has been optimized over time. Genetic info carries that over to our descendants. Also, about the whole "hunters vs nurturers" matter, I have to say that I agree. Proof is given by genetics and the brain, again: men have more precise control over their movements and have a better sense of distance and geometry than women due to high interactivity between several cerebral areas - I believe all this, combined with more brute strenght provided by increased muscle mass (testosterone) may have helped hunting. Women however have individual areas that developed more extensively and as such, are better listeners, better readers, and could also distinguish colors better, for example. This specific capability is associated with identifying non-poisonous food (color matters). Had we switched places while maintaining the same abilities, our race would probably perish lol. So, it's not just being equal. We had different tasks several thousand years ago... and that's still inside our DNA lol (slowly, very slowly changing). specific commenting, now: Unless you're somehow joking, please explain the logic behind this whole sentence to me. Sure they can. Not most women can, but there will surely be some who can. Is everything in life just plain black and white? Of course not... mostly, the world is made in shades of gray... Men have some advantage on girls, of course. It's obvious from our day-to-day experience. Also, another thing that's obvious is that we have more cardiovascular risk, etc etc... it's somewhat of a dumb comment... lol Also, many women tend to portray men as if they were all stupid and emotionless (just check out Mermaid711's quote). That's a lot worse than having a lot of men thinking you're a sensitive and caring person, despite having that monthly bleeding. Feelings matter, and like BuffaloHELP said, men are quite simply ignored in this matter. Anyway, we ARE equal. In a way, each gender makes up for the other gender's inabilities. And if we look carefully, currently women have some advantages, even in this equality: they may assume women or men-like activities and tend to be well seen by society. When a men does something commonly attributed to women (small things like for example, cleaning the house or even cooking), everyone's jumpin' over him because his not man enough. That's how equal we are. We're just not looked at in the same matter.

Mostly everything will be written in English... I guess that only some very specific pages may be portuguese.. Anyway, thanks for replying

Why Are People With Darker Eyes Considered Less Atractive?
pedro-kun replied to Mermaid711's topic in Health & Fitness
Why not stop the nonsense, by the way? I'm not referring to the post, but to the surgery itself, of course.Eye color depends on the amount of melanin present in the iris (the more melanin it has, the darker the iris will be). Actually, if you're able to look beyond these stupid ideas concepts about the brighter eyes being more beautiful, we easily come to the conclusion that darker eyes are BETTER.They have more melanin, which prevents things like UV rays from entering the eye in great amounts, minimizing the risk of mutations, etc... Also, they decrease the amount of light reflected, resulting in better accuracy. Of course, these differences are so tiny that one does not usually even consider them... but I think they're much more worth referencing than the "beauty side" of the eye, which is purely cultural...Why would anyone want to change the color of the iris??? Why the hell would anyone wear colored contact lenses? Do these people even know that contact lenses harm the eyes? So, I'd never undergo such a pointless procedure (unless there was proof of benefits). Also, my eyes are brownish-amber color :)This world is getting more and more about the looks everyday that passes... -
Despite all the bells and whistles that Winzip my possess, I still think WinRAR beats it anytime, anywhere. However, neither one is free.... So, why not try something like p7zip? It supports the most common formats out there, including the already mentioned 7z which has very good compression rates.Anyway, some one mentioned that Winzip has cute things for people who need business solutions... I disagree:Even though Winzip may ease the backup and recording process, I would rather pay for an advanced task scheduling software than pay winzip to have those functions... It's just too limited. Imagine: with p7zip and a decent task scheduler, I could keep zipping and burning backups just like I did before, AND also set up many other automated tasks such as cleaning old backups from memory, etc...It's just not that useful to have Winzip ou Winrar these days... other programs/formats are better and free."But those formats are not so widely known" <-- well, we can't blame the programmers... it's the users' fault. users are the ones who use pirated versions of winzip and winrar. If they didn't, there would probably be other formats in the big picture.

A Prelude To Programming What to learn? How to learn?
pedro-kun replied to ashrafulsheikh's topic in Programming
If you already know (x)HTML and CSS, go for PHP and SQL. Also, you may begin with C and C++ (which are somewhat alike loool). As said above, Javascript will help you design more interactive pages... but just for starters, try to go without javascript. You'll catch up to it later... php is more important. THEN, try ajax and such. For the Desktop you have the already mentioned C and C++, and I would also encourage you to try out Haskell... it may be a little difficult in the beginning, but it's a pretty neat language and the performance is not bad at all! It's just funny lol (and really useful sometimes)Also, try Python and/or Perl. Ruby is also a cool choice. These last three work great both in desktop and web apps :)You don't need to learn C# lol. I mean, I never saw the need for it. -
Hearing High Pitch Noise In My Head WHY does IT HAPPEN?
pedro-kun replied to Unregistered025's topic in Health & Fitness
If you can, take a look at the anatomy of the ear, for example... The buzzing sound (tinnitus) can be due to problems in the cochlea. If you listen to loud music or work in a loud environment, try to wear some protection. In case you don't know, upon entering the ear, sound waves are very amplified and their motion is transmitted to a fluid inside the cochlea. That fluid will in turn move a membrane full of tiny cells which do the actual "hearing". This membrane is slightly stretched on one end and a bit loose on the other (high and low frequencies, respectively). So, if excessive motion of the fluid occurs, the stretched part may be damaged, and there goes the high-frequency perception LOL. Always, I really mean ALWAYS protect your ears. They may stop functioning, you know? lolAs for the blackouts, circulation problems, as already said, lead to decreased blood in the brain, which begins to malfunction as hypoxia grows bigger and bigger... There are some medications for this condition, all of which may have their side-effects, of course. Also, as already said, try to talk you doctor over these things, and not people in the forum. It's for your own good -
Have you actually tried googling about this matter? There are lots of places where you can obtain such info. Also, why not try re-read Wikipedia's article? The info there is somewhat neutral and may help you understand the fundamentals of this "religion" (they hate to see people call it a cult, I recall). After the objective analysis of the subject, you may refer to countless sites such as http://www.xenu.net/ or even the Church of Scientology's Video Channel to learn about the inner workings and several different opinions regarding the matter.... ...as for me, I just don't think that wasting time over Scientology is worth. And I will say nothing more

Even so, I'd like to hear some admin or mod on this matter I like playing safe and I just wanna be sure I don't step over the line

Hello,I'm sorry to bother you all again... I've read the TOS and I'm having second thoughts about the "site must be in English" rule. I was thinking about having some Portuguese stuff there (because I am portuguese, and sometimes I create portuguese content)... Would there be any problem? If in doubt, I could of course translate content for further analysis by the administration... The main site would remain in English, of course..I know you created the rule to prevent illegal content... however, I'd really like to have at least some things in portuguese... I just want to know if we are allowed to have some things in other languages.I'll be awaiting your answers regarding the matter

Well, she can visit her gynecologist regularly and check for cancer in the vagina, uterus... also, mammograms help detect tumours in the breasts. Your girlfriend should also learn to inspect her breasts herself and do that regularly. There are a couple of sites where she can get that kind of info. Basically, she has to go through the breast by quadrants trying to find lumps on it. A lump may be a tumour. but it may also be a mammary gland (which produces milk!)... so practice will help, of course. If your girlfriend's nipples eject some fluid and she's not breastfeeding there may also be a tumour, an infection, etc...Regular checkups are vital to good prevention and early detection! A piece of advice: always refer to a doctor when in doubt about these kinds of things... don't take advice from forums when the matter is health! If you do decide to follow some advice found here, always check that with a real doctor first

OpenOffice can't open all of Microsoft Office's formats. I mean, OOo can open them, but doesn't render them correctly. Try composing a mildly complex document in MSO and them open it in OOo. The formatting is either gone, or else it is wrong (sometimes only subtle imperfections, but other times there are huge differences from the original version of the document). Also, MSO runs far faster than OOo. The interface feels less sluggish and everything seems to be in the right place. OOo is a mess in terms of code (and not only in terms of code). Okay, I know, it is free, and for most people, it has all the features they will ever need except ONE hugelly important feature: compatibility with MSO. All my teachers at the university prepare slides for their classes and then give them away for students to study them. It's rare for me to find a powerpoint slide which works flawlessly. RARE. Also, things like arrows and such are poorly rendered (and I won't even talk about how slow transitions in OOo are).OpenOffice's major problem is that porting documents between it and MSO is not a perfect science. And some peoples grades/jobs depend on correct documentation, etc... Imagine what it would be to be a scientist who prepared a presentation at home in OOo and then at the congress he had to use MSO... the formatting could be all wrong... even though this would not be the end of his life (lol), such mess would obviously have an impact in what others might think of him.So, when comparing MSO with OOo, please don't just go ahead and say they both have the same features. They can behave almost the same for simple text processing and other small things... But when compatibility and presentation matter, it's a safer bet to just use MSO. "It's not free" -> oh well, many things in life aren't. If you want support, performance, and some guarantee of quality, MSO is the way to go, at least for now.Oh, and that PDF-export thing... it's not a real advantage.. you can have that on MSO with third-party free software. I know it's built into OOo, but who cares? Also, MSO works on all platforms to... Windows and Mac, at least. We all know that most people who use office suites work on those same platforms. OOo works on *nixes too, but *nix people who want good documents use LaTeX/TeX anyway. Spreadsheets and databases are the ones without alternative lol.PS.: I think some might think I'm against OpenOffice... I'm not. I use it!. However, I'm aware of its imperfections. I'd love to be able to say "OpenOffice is the best!!", but unfortunately, it's not. Not yet. Well, at least for now, I can say "it rocks!", but I hope the developers improve it more and more... there's still a lot to do to make it stand beside (or surpass) MSO.

I always though that gzip compression had to be turned on server-side... Apparently I can do this with simple .htaccess magic... I didn't really know that, so thank you, everyone :)Also, about the irc bot... It's not spam-related lol. Also, the bot would obviously be active at *my* IRC channel, of course... no spamming here Anyway, I know this is too much to ask already, so I'll be good without the bot anyway. Thanks again for the help

Not only that, but there are really nice plugins for almost every board type which can highlight *many* languages. It'd be a really nice function, I guess. I bet the folks back at the coding sections would love it Even though it is Python-based, there's a cool highlighter called Pygments... It works pretty fine (even though there are bugs, of course).
