In the relationship between an agent and a principal, both parties consent to the agent having the ability to act on behalf of the principal. This is known as a form of principal-agent relationship called power of attorney. Such a relationship plays an important role in business, whether it be in the workplace, a partnership, or a corporation. There are three types of authority in a principal-agent relationship: express, implied, and apparent authority. Express authority is what the principal directly tells the agent his duties and responsibilities are. This cannot cover every detail though, so the authority extends to what is necessary for the agent to carry out the principal?s instructions. Such authority is known as implied authority. There is also apparent authority in which the principal leads another to believe that a certain person is his agent. This is also known as agency by estoppel. The relationship is said to be fiduciary, meaning that there is a degree of trust and obedience on the agent?s part. The agent owes various duties to his principal. One of these is the duty of loyalty; the agent must act for the principal?s benefit and not his own. He cannot be on both sides of a transaction unless both parties are aware of it and agree to it. The agent also cannot disclose trade secrets about the principal?s business after the term of employment is up. He must obey all of the principal?s orders, provided they are reasonable. If any of the instructions go against the law, he will be held responsible for performing illegal actions. He is also required to carry out the actions of his principal as if he were doing it for himself.Within the workplace, this relationship plays a very important role. The association between employer and employee can be described as being principal-agent. This is also a master-servant relationship since the principal has a good amount of control over the agent. The employer controls the activities of the employee and is responsible for any injuries that might be caused by the employee?s activities, provided the employee is acting within the scope of employment. The principal-agent relationship can also be seen with independent contractors. These people are hired to perform a certain task; however, the person who hires them is not the one who controls them. The principal does not have as much control over the independent contractor as he would in a master-servant relationship. The agent-principal relationship is very important in a business partnership as well. A partnership is created when two parties consent to be ?co-owners of a business for profit." The business becomes an extension of the partners? personal liability, and the profits or losses are passed through to the partners? tax return. The partners are said to be agents of each other; therefore, they owe the duties mentioned above to each other. In addition to this, the partners must both work to manage the partnership. They can appoint these duties to specific partners, in accordance with the agency rules of express, implied, and apparent authority. Other times they may vote on certain matters and let the majority rule. Larger decisions in which no apparent authority can be claimed, such as settling a lawsuit or selling the partnership?s assets or goodwill require a unanimous vote. The principal-agent relationship is also important in a corporation. Such a business is a legal entity in itself and is treated as a person under the law. It is run by a board of directors whom its shareholders elect. These directors make the policies of the corporation and look after it. They are agents of the corporation and owe a fiduciary duty to it; they must look out for the best interest of the corporation. They are held to the business judgment rule where they must show that their actions were made after carefully studying the situation. To benefit the corporation, they may choose to hire other agents, such as attorneys, accountants, or financial analysts. Directors also may not take for themselves an opportunity that their corporation may want. The principal-agent relationship can end for several reasons; the contract might reach its end date, the purpose for the agency may be accomplished, or the principal may die or become incapacitated. Even if the agent is fired or if he quits, the agreement does not automatically end. The agent can still have lingering apparent authority since various third parties may remain unaware of the termination of the relationship. To ensure that the agent does not act beyond his authority at the end of the relationship, the principal must be sure to give notice that the person is no longer his agent. There are two kinds of notice. The first is actual notice in which the principal informs everyone with whom the agent is dealt. He must also give constructive notice to the general public to ensure that they are aware as well. He can do this through trade magazines or newspapers. The relationship between a principal and his agent is one which is vital in the workplace and to many businesses, especially partnerships or corporations. Such a relationship ensures that the best interests of the business are looked out for and helps it to prosper in the long run.

That sounds very interesting! I've never had mustard leaves...what do they taste like? I'd like to try this.

The people I know who purposely get drunk usually do it to look cool, which doesn't make sense to me becausing losing control of yourself usually just makes you look like an idiot. Some do it to forget about something that's bothering them, but most often it's all about their image.I agree with Ernest Hemingway's ideal of drinking...a person should drink (even if heavily) but not get drunk. That way, you can get the benefit of feeling relaxed but still know you won't be making an idiot of yourself.

I'm afraid of heights too, but I still make a point of climbing ladders and looking down even when I don't want to, just to convince myself that I'll be okay. It has really helped lessen my phobia.I also get claustophobic in large crowds. I don't mind if a tight space is created by walls, but if it's people boxing me in, then I freak out.But I think my worst fear is public speaking. Especially when the audience is probing and skeptical of whatever I'm saying.

Eating a high protein diet which was also rich in fruits and vegetables is what helped clear my skin up. My brother finds that taking a multivitamin helps his. It varies from person to person; if your skin is naturally oily, then perhaps the most important thing you can do is keep it clean by washing a few times a day and eat a healthy diet lower in fat. I'm wary of products meant to clear up acne; usually small, natural changes are what work best. I have found though, that using a thick scrub to clean my face works wonders. There is a myriad of articles and information on tips to reduce acne. I'd just keep trying different things until you find something that works. Use common sense, of course...buying a $1000000 miracle pill to clear it up in 5 min probably isn't a good idea

Are Girls Prettier Without Makeup? Vote & Say You Thoughts
thorne replied to lihuyt's topic in Health & Fitness
I don't think makeup is necessary at all. It should be reserved for when you want to look a little different, such as during a big party or special occasion. I think that instead of spending an hour a day applying paint to your face, you'd be better served to spend the hour exercising, doing yoga, or some other activity which contributes to your health, thereby making you pretty naturally.I noticed that by changing my diet and activity level, my appearance changed dramatically in ways I hadn't anticipated. My skin and hair acquired that healthy "glow," and my skin became less oily. I no longer needed powder to make it look drier. The problem with makeup also is that it's kind of addicting. Very few people, once they get used to it, feel that they will look good without out. It's as if you start and then you can't stop. And it is true that when a girl who normally wears makeup appears without it, she looks different. But that doesn't mean she's uglier without it, just different. -
Our bodies are so complicated that it's difficult to determine what exactly is good for them and what is not. So much effort goes into trying to figure this out, but many different results are often obtained. Since we're all different, this makes sense to some extent. I think that as long as we keep biology in mind and remember that we evolved to survive and thrive in a natural enviorment, we can make smart food choices. That is, foods that were available to us millions of years ago, like fruit or nuts, are generally good for us, whereas things we've recently concoted such as Twinkies and Oreos generally aren't. Even supplements should be viewed with a skeptical eye. Our ancestors survived without them, so we shold be able to make it as well.No matter how much we try to defy nature, we cannot. Death, unfortunately, is inevitable, even if we want to optimize our nutrition to the fullest. We might as well be reasonable about it so that we can live life without spending every moment worrying if what we are eating is okay.

I think you can argue that any exercise may be bad for you, because if you do it improperly, you could hurt yourself. But as long as you're moving your body in a way it was meant to be moved, you should be fine (within reason, of course). Any type of exercise will hurt at first if you aren't strong enough, but doing it will get you stronger. It's just important not to overdo anything or strain yourself. As long as you're using common sense and listening to your body (there's a difference between pain that is building your muscles and pain that indicates you're pushing yourself way to far), you should be fine.

It's hard to judge without sample text in place; the title usually plays a huge role in how a site appears. Also, maybe the navigation should be moved to the left? It may be counterintuitive otherwise.I like the colors and the bubble background of the title bar. What did you use to design it?

Who Is The Best Writer Did You Ever Read And His Or Her Book
thorne replied to krtbs's topic in General Discussion
I also love L.M. Montgomery's books...the Anne and Emily series were both so good; I just wish there were more than three books in the latter. I liked Puzo's The Godfather as well, much better than the movies, even though those were very, very good.My favorite authors though are the three Bronte sisters, Charlotte, Emily, and Anne. Charlotte's Jane Eyre and Anne's The Tenant of Wildfell Hall are my two favorites out of their books. I just ordered a book of Charlotte's Tales of Angria which she wrote when she was younger, and I can't wait to start it. It's been so long since I read a Bronte book for the first time. -
Do You Dream In Black & White Or Color?
thorne replied to GrinningKittie's topic in General Discussion
I dream in color. Sometimes the colors are more vivid than other times, and I wake up remembering specific parts where the color was particularly bright. But most often there is nothing extraordinary about the dream's color, it is just the way I would experience it in real life.I'm finding that I remember my dreams less and less. I really only remember one out of every hundred or so dreams that I have. When I first wake up, major images and events stick in my mind, but within the hour they are gone, and I mean completely gone.Considering how weird some of them are, this is probably a good thing... -
I used to dream of going to MIT for grad school...but I don't know if I really want to go that route anymore. What I currently love about MIT is their OpenCourseWare (ocw.mit.edu). I've downloaded lectures that interest me, put them on my mp3 player, and I just walk around listening to interesting information. It's easy and I've learned some cool things so far!

I can't emphasize enough how impressed I am everytime I meet someone who is humble and kind, and then later find out they've done something incredible but never even talk about it. It can be tempting when you've achieved something big to want to go broadcast it and call attention to yourself, but it takes strength to keep it to yourself and just be satisfied with the fact that you did it, not needing others' approval of it.Abandoning pride forces you to learn to earn just your own approval, not that of those around you. This, I think, is key to being happy. You need to live on your own terms instead of depending on others to say when you're good enough or when you've done enough. Instead of pride, you need contentment with yourself as you are.

It's important to do a variety of weight lifting exercises when trying to build muscle, so that you get muscle added all over your body, not just one area. Proper nutrition is essential: LOTS of protein to build the muscles and good fats (monounsaturated) and carbohydrates (complex, "brown" starch, not sugar or refined starch) to give your body the energy to build this muscle. It is also vital to give your body plenty of rest. Yes, the workouts will be intense and hard, but you need to be sure you get adequate sleep at night and work different areas on different days instead of beating up the same muscles every day. When you lift, you are ripping apart your muscle, so you need to give your body a chance to use the protein you're consuming and build it back up again. You also need to watch the amount of cardio exercise you do. It is very important to do some for overall health and endurance, but if you overdo it, you'll be burning off the calories your body would otherwise use to build the muscle. As you build muscle, you also need to increase your diet, because unlike fat, muscle burns calories even when you're at rest. So as you get more muscle, you'll burn more energy just by living and breathing.Gaining weight...the good kind, course...can be just as difficult as losing weight. But with the right diet and weight listing regime, it is possible.

I would say that it definitely depends on the business. If it's something that women tend to care about more than men, that sure, females will probably be harder to please, but if it's the other way around, then men would be. Of course, this would vary from person to person, as was metioned. If you're selling cars, male clients may be more difficult as they tend to be more interested in this subject, but there are still females who are interested and knowledgeable in this area.I hate to make generalizations like this, but I do feel like, when it comes to businesses, you kind of have to. You can't get to know every potential customer you'll have, but you still have to keep their needs in mind as you design your products or serves for them. So such generalizations, such as "females are more difficult to please," may be helpful for the business.

Starting a business in any artistic pursuit does make sense considering the fact that you've probably got your own vision and style of what looks good, giving your work an original spin. However, because there are so many competitors out there, you really need to be serious and work at marketing your business in order to make it. You also will need to produce really high-quality work in order to entice potential customers. Before opening your business, be sure to do some market research and get an idea of what most web designers offer. Is there a particular service they lack, which you think would be really helpful? By having an extra feature like this, it gives you an edge over your competitors and gives your potential customers a reason to choose you over them. It also gives you the opportunity to charge a little extra for your work. There's always room for improvement in anything. By thoroughly examining your market and the needs of your audience, you can identify where this improvement should occur, and then provide it. This is how you will get ahead, and what will make your business unique despite the numerous other firms offering web design services.

I agree with those who say The Simpsons, even though I don't watch it anymore. It's probably not a fair call since I started watching The Simpsons before Family Guy, but I like the humor of the former much better. Family Guy was funny too, but I felt as if so much of it was just a little too off the wall (not that The Simpsons is all that normal). I don't really watch either one anymore though.

Dissolved oxygen is the amount of oxygen contained in water. The oxygen gets into the water by photosynthesis or by the mixing of air with water. Plants and animals use the oxygen in water for respiration, and aerobic bacteria use it for decomposing. Water can hold different amounts of oxygen, depending on several different factors. More oxygen can be held in water of lower temperature than in warmer water, water with a lower salinity level, and water in areas of higher air pressure.Low levels of DO, also called oxygen depletion, can occur when the consumption of oxygen exceeds the production of it. Too many plants or algae, increased organic waste, and certain chemicals can cause excessive consumption of oxygen. Oxygen depletion is most likely to occur in the summer when water temperatures are higher, days are cloudy which reduces photosynthesis by reducing the amount of light reaching the water, and a thermocline develops which reduces the amount of oxygen in the water below it.Oxygen depletion and can be harmful to many organisms, including fish. Many species of fish are affected when DO levels reach 2-4 mg/L. At concentrations less than 2 mg/L, fish can die depending on exactly how low the DO gets and the amount of time which it stays low. Larger fish also tend to be affected by low DO levels more than smaller fish are. There has been a severe effect on Lake Erie due to oxygen depletion. Humans have caused lots of phosphorus to enter the lake where it causes large amounts of algae to grow. In the early summer, the concentration of the algae becomes so high that they can?t get enough light and they begin to die. The cells that have died fall to the bottom of the lake where bacteria decomposes them. These bacteria use up lots of oxygen and cause oxygen depletion. The bottom layer of Lake Erie is colder than the top layer, so the two do not mix. This leaves no chance for the oxygen in the air to be dissolved in the water. Both the United States and Canada have been trying to reduce the amount of phosphorus going into Lake Erie since the 1970?s. The amount of phosphorus has gone down to a level which should lower the number of organisms being killed due to oxygen depletion. In the sediments at the bottom of the lake however, algae not completely decomposed continue to lower the DO. Once these algae are completely degraded, the DO should increase and make oxygen depletion less of a problem.

Transpiration is a plant?s loss of water, usually through the stomates of leaves. Plants have guard cells to regulate the water loss. These guard cells open and close the stomates in response to various environmental conditions; darkness, lack of water within the plant, and extreme temperatures cause the guard cells to close the stomates while light, plentiful water, and favorable temperatures cause them to open the stomates. Some stomates must be open even in unfavorable conditions so that the plant can take in carbon dioxide.Dryland farming is the growing of crops in areas of little moisture without irrigation. It is important to control the amount of moisture lost so that there is enough to keep the plants living. The destruction of weeds and prevention of runoff are the most common ways to reduce moisture loss.Crops that can survive must be carefully selected. They can be either drought evasive or drought resistant. Drought evasive crops grow when conditions are not severe. Drought resistant crops can reduce transpiration but may not grow at all during harsh periods and resume growth when conditions are favorable.Greenhouses are structures which house plants and provide supplemental heat. Radiation enters the clear glass or plastic walls of the house and heats the soil. During the night, the soil slowly releases the heat and keeps the plants warm. The heat, as long wave radiation, is prevented from leaving the house at night, so it builds up and keeps the plants warm.During the summer, the sun shines brighter, so these greenhouses are usually kept in the shade to reduce transpiration. Some have precise environmental controls called phytotrons. Automatic watering, regulation of light and shade, addition of carbon dioxide, and the regulation of fertility control other environmental factors as well.

Crunchy Or Smooth The ultimate peanutbutter poll
thorne replied to flamette's topic in General Discussion
No way...crunchy is the way to go. The texture gives it that extra something. It's also much better in peanut butter cookies, the peanuts seem to give a slightly stronger flavor. -
Is Outer Space The Future Of Mankind? the moon, mars, asteroids
thorne replied to hansen's topic in Science and Technology
We definitely need to continue our research about space before we will be able to live off our planet, but right now there are more pressing areas for researcher's time and money, so it may not come for awhile. At the same time, however, we are multiplying to beyond what our planet can sustain, and we may soon deplete it of the things we need to live. As this occurs, researcher's shift may focus. Either we will need to find a way to make this planet continue to be hospitable, or we will need to find a way to make somewhere else that way and live there.Reading Orson Scott Card's Speaker for the Dead series offered interesting insight to what it may be like if we begin colonizing other planets. Of course it is only fiction, but it gets you thinking. In these books, different cultures went to different planets. I wonder how we as a species will change if we were to isolate ourselves in groups on different plants. Perhaps we would evolve into different species, which could create many issues if we decided to merge one day.At this point, there can only be speculation about a future in space, but it is still a fascinating subject to consider! -
I'm usually not a fan of movies made from books...I find that the book is often much more detailed and gives you a better chance to get to know the characters. I really dislike watching the movie before reading the book since it ruins the ending of the book and doesn't give me the opportunity to imagine things as I would have if I hadn't seen the movie first. I refused to watch a movie version of Jane Eyre, my favorite book, because I knew that it would never, ever be as good.On the other hand, if the book is a drama, then I enjoy seeing different movie versions of it, provided the script is kept in full. It's interesting to see the interpretations, and this way the story doesn't get cut or warped.

How Many of You Use the C Programming language?
thorne replied to red_dragon_here's topic in Programming
C/C++ is my language of choice, unless I'm doing web programming. After reading "The C Programming Language," I was amazed at how powerful the language was and how much you could do with a few little tricks. I highly recommend this book to any programmer, even if you already know C. It teaches a new way of thinking about code and is highly informative. -
I'd be curious to try a cake-pie, where instead of pie filling, there was a normal, iced cake. It'd be kind of weird with a flaky pie crust, but I think with a graham cracker crust it would be quite good, especially if the cake was dense and flourless. You should try stepping up the originality of your creation by frying it! With the frying craze that's going on, it might catch on
