  5. The first one didn't give me any feeling about what the clan or the radio were about. It just seemed very corporate and anonymous with alot of utilitarian links. The second one seemed alot more exciting and immediately gave me a feeling of what I should expect to discover.
  6. Have you got a camera? If not please get one today. A community site is meant to celebrate and showcase it's community. If you're part of it, you've got great chances to capture it and show some "adventure packed fun" in the design. Check out Scouts Canada - its boring and I bet you could do better but you get the idea of what I mean about the community it represents being used in the design.
  7. Wow! Awesome site...simple but very creative..

Whizz, this kind of question had been asked several times..maybe you wanna make a sticky thread on it...
  11. Nice design. I don't think you need that part of the animation that reveals the eyes. Its not enough of a surprise or new information - just takes up time. Maybe start out with a very light version of the eyes and just darken it up to what it should be as an animation. Do those eyes really say who you are as a designer? The products you're trying to showcase are examples of your work. Maybe rethink your design with only stills of them in some cool way that relates to what they are and uses their design features as a guide to how they should relate to each other. The red fish and the jellyfish are very cool. Maybe just make a stip across the middle with stills of all the good stuff that expands and animates on rollover.
  12. You lucked out. Amber is a great thing to work with visually. You've got to go with it as the prime thing though. Get rid of all the frames and do a horizontal orientation of 3 or four product lines that have a big showcase image of beautiful amber for each one. put some small tastful buttons across the bottom and the logo. Try not to let any design element compete with the products. Be ruthlessly minimal - the Amber speaks for itself; showcase it.When you do need text, take a big piece of amber for the background and blur, darken or lighten and float the text on it. Keep the same horizontal structure throughout. There's an all-Amber room in a big palace in Russia. Think of that for your site. You're not just selling Amber, make it a gallery or museum with cool lighting that the Amber floats in.
  13. Your opening page with the figure and the text on a black background is very strong but why is there such a great difference between the style of it and the inner pages? The font is different, the figure is not referred to again anywhere, they could be two completely different sites. Also whats up with the leaves and the paintbrush? How do they relate to the content? It looks like its a site for landscape painting supplies. Sorry to be a bit critical but sometimes this happens with sites that have been around a while and get changed bit by bit. The parts sometimes grow apart from each other stylistically. You should do an inventory of all your design elements and compare them to each other. Take a look at where your content is going and get the design to really highlight that. Oh, and one very important thing. The history you are dealing with one of the richest and most influencial image sources in the world. Try to think of some way of showcasing this in backgrounds, headers, sidebars etc. Fill up some directories with them and get scripts that change it up for different times of day and different days of the week. You have a very rich annual calendar of traditional and historic events that could also structure what matching images will be displayed. Take a look at some National Geographic layouts for classic examples of how to relate texts and images.
  14. very slickjust need to think about some contenthow bout world peace or eradicate hunger (kidding )
  15. please no more snowmake it stop
  16. Just the one figure with the guns works bestfighting those strong diagonals is a losing battleput a solid band across the bottom and put some simple text in it like the stuff thats in the one with 3 figures keep it really clean and let the atmosphere do all the talking
  17. Like #3its got depth, clarity and attitudethe font doesn't work thoughtry the font from the green one #2you could bring it right over the left side of the head over the hairmight work?
  18. How to explain PHP, well for starters, PHP is a server side scripting language, meaning that any of the code processed is done by the web server on that web server, the information that is outputted is sent to the client (e.g. your web browser). You can look at PHP as a modifier, theoritical upgrade but not replacement for HTML (web markup language for displaying web pages), basically PHP gives HTML more abilities that HTML lacks in, like the ability to have dynamic content (content that is written on the fly). Not only this, but PHP can create full fledged applications, either with adding extensions into the language, but the core of the language still remains PHP. PHP is built around many existing languages, they implemented their styles and ways to create this language. PHP is quite similar to C and Perl that if you knew these languages, even just the slight basics, you'd be able to understand the code, maybe not fully, but it wouldn't be hard for you to learn. The best place to find out about PHP would be their own website PHP Site and by reading their manual. Cheers, MC
  19. Yow Whizz that is scaaawy uglyprevious comments both right thoughmany n00bs doin the sig efforts but better ways to give constructive. its a bit of work but a detailed analysis and advice on steps is very helpful
  20. try making the flare on the right smaller and more distant and more over into the middle a bitright now they compete and the middle is empty looking
  21. this has been discussed before, we're probably not going to do it!
  22. I think its a cool idea. Alot different from most. the flares not bad but just needs toning down a bitthe main thing is to give the centre image a background, somewhere to fly in, not just blackalso either you gotta pull in for more of a closeup on some specific gear or pull back and show more of the action figurealso if you could give a bit more highlighting on the figure tooLike the layout, it works.
