  3. What's wrong with Pet Sematary? It's good, slightly chilling. The book is obviously better though. Well the sequels did suck really badly but the first film is pretty good.
  4. Anyone like to use Corel Painter? I've seen some awesome stuff done with it.
  5. So then it appears that not a lot of people are pushing Netscape as a favorite. How about a blast from the past: anyone still using neoplanet? The skinnable browser.

  7. We must be from different old school, my games were text-based, later CGA/EGA then VGA graphics and trust me, when you're 8 years old and can type 30 wpm, it really impressed the girls, so text-based games weren't that bad (also known as Text Adventures and Interactive Fiction). Now I average 70+ wpm but it's not impressive to the girls anymore, unless you type up their work for them. But I do remember those games, http://www.xtcabandonware.com/ has a few old school games you may remember, if not there's additional links to more sites. I suggest you stroll down memory lane, try to find those games that you use to play but may have lost. You may also need a DOS emulator (DOSBox), to slow some of the games down that went by the speed of the CPU cycles, since those IBM XTs or compatibles weren't that fast at the time but speedwise for those games it was acceptable. Cheers, MC
  8. Alright, I am now halfway through the first Otherland book, The City of Golden Shadow. It's really good now, and Tad Williams hooks you with some good cliffhangers at the end of each chapter that leaves you wanting more. Darn it! Those cliffhangers are effective... I better get back to reading the book now.

  14. Hey dissipate, I can't really tell you what you can charge as I've got a breakdown in pricing in NZ dollars and I really shouldn't display it for competitior reasons, usually I price each company differently and don't really have a set package price, but I do have a minimum. But don't do by the hour, as the job could be a few weeks to even months. It's best to sell the site as a package, and give a reasonable amount of time of when it will be completed, make sure you give yourself enough time, very important. If they accept you, ask for half the money first and the rest when finished. Very important to do it this way. Site Pages and Design/Layout Work out a price for site pages and design, the number of pages you'll create (contacts, home, etc) and layout, this should cost around $200 - $600+, depending on a few things, charge as much as you feel it should be. Remember, you're basically trying to give them the best deal at what you think it should cost, you give them numbers and they'll get back to you, whether they choose you to do it or someone else. Files, Brochures, Booklets, Images, etc If they require PDF or files for download, scanning of pictures (things you must do to get the items on the web if they don't provide it themselves) etc, you should charge for this too, although not that expensive, it still should be considered in your charges, say roughly around $50 - $300 and not more, however for images you can charge $100 - $300+. Testing and Debugging This is something else you may consider charging for, make sure the site is operational and functions how it's suppose to and is error free, very vital that you do this, so why not get paid for this too, although, you may like to suggest that you'll give back a small percentage of this costs if it's not working correctly when you say it's completed. Anywhere from $100 - $300 but not more. Content Management If you create for them a means to manage their own site, then this is where you'll benefit. If it eliminates you from updating their sites then it'll save them money in the long run, if you do create such a thing for them then charge roughly 3 times the price of the above costs you've set for yourself. This is reasonable enough. That's basically how I split the costs up. Usually you would have templates, scripts etc, already designed so that you could have their site up within weeks. It's how a lot of web designers do it nowadays, it's rare that they create sites from scratch, and if they do, it's even costs more than the above. So hopefully this gives you a generalisation of what to expect, remember if you're trying to get the business, make it reasonable, check out your professional local web designers and see what they charge, and be shocked at how much they do it, but remember, they've got everything ready so it's only a short time when they can get a site up. Make sure to get yourself a place where you can get web hosting and domain names at a reasonable charge and include that pricing. Make sure it has everything that the business needs. Cheers, MC

  19. I think you should clear CGI up a bit better, saying it's like a web version executable is slightly incorrect, as you can create binary files to be executed as CGI from other languages.CGI is basically an addon extension for HTML that provides a scripting language interpretter that can perform many operations by what you feed it, allowing dynamic content to be generated in your HTML pages, by a number of programming languages, not just PERL which is probably the most common language used for this. You can use binary files from Python, C/C++ and that's just a few I can think of at the top of my head.Basically if you look at it as a programming language is saying it's a Server Side language extension added to HTML to provide a means of dynamic content, very similar to PHP, they require an interpretter to process the commands.CGI is the grounds (interface), the scripting language can be a multitude of languages, but PERL is the most common and probably the best for this means, but you can use other languages, just remember that.Cheers,MC

  21. One of my favourite but unfortunate IT terms I use is NFG (No F@#$%king Good), used to mark equipment, components that are beyond repair. A good place to get information on terms is http://www.webopedia.com/ Cheers, MC
  22. Are the computers networked correctly? Can you ping both computers and get a response, allow both computers through your firewall for this to work. The type of network you may want is a P2P network. Basically what you do is right click on the drive/folder to share, go to sharing and then allow share, you can make it read only (can't delete or write files on whatever you share)/full control etc, you can add a password to. If this isn't there, go into your network properties and there should be a checkbox to allow file and print sharing, make sure it's checked then attempt this step again. There should be already a shared folder which is enabled by default in which you should be able to access going through network neighbourhood, if not, you may need to configure your firewall correctly to allow file sharing. You can then map shared drives/folders as network drives on the other computer for easier access. If you need more help, just ask, I would have given you a better step by step but I currently ain't in Windows so I'm going by memory. Cheers, MC
