Seems, there is a variant of backdoor.Sdbot family of worms and IRC backdoor Trojans that is disguised as Microsoft Security Adviser. This is quite nasty because it infects system files and is very difficult to remove. Trend Micro has a nice online tool called House Call but this trojan survived that so you have to look elsewhere to remove it. No telling what the triggers are but I simply removed the files and the registry keys pointing to them and now I can't even get into my BIOS.Search for msscan.exe if you have it then find RegRun on the net and they claim it removes msscan.exe. Greatis claims RegRun removes msscan.exe but they also claim it is different (W32.Kedebe.B@MM) worm than Anubis reports.I will post additional information as soon as I find out if I can recover in a non-destructive fashion. If anyone finds instructions or free tools that might help recover once the trojan has already disabled keyboard and mouse please post here.

Microsoft Update Program Being Used By Hackers
jamers replied to Saint_Michael's topic in Security issues & Exploits
msscan.exe is part of one such trojanI'm dealing with recovery myself and I need some advice from an admin type guru before taking the destructive way out!I have server 2000 spk4 and after running trend micros "House Call" to do an online detection and clean up it found and removed all but the "Microsoft Security Update" (MSU) trojan, a variant of the Backdoor.Sdbot family of worms and IRC backdoor Trojans (according to bleepingcomputer). Before running anything I wanted to stop some processes and try removing manually but my task manager was greyed out, (panic starts to set in). That's when I ran the house call... Then I booted into safe mode and deleted the directory for Microsoft Security Update and ran regedit to remove the MSU keys in both locations as listed by (don't remember the site name) manual removal instructions. OK, feeling better now the reboot and hmmmmm post beep, then pause then another post beep. This is strange, I don't recall having 2 posts but whatever. Wait for login and as soon as I press ctrl alt del the keyboard and mouse hang. Panic is back, feeling like this trojan is locking me out of my server so it can run some nasty mass mailer program or something. Tried booting into safe mode again but now the keyboard does nothing at any time during post. Can't get into safe mode, more panic. Tried booting into bios, can't get into bios, big panic attack. Can't boot from windows CD, don't have recovery disks or setup disks. Tried making them on my other box (win 98SE) but when booting the server with the setup boot disk I get disk IO error. Duh, too much panic I think maybe these disks can't be made on a 98 box and used to setup win2000 because of the different file system. So here I sit wondering if there is a way to get my server back without destroying all my data. I am willing to reinstall Windows if I can but would like to avoid having to install my apps again. When I boot the server with the ethernet disconnected there is an error starting a service... or something like that. One or more services failed to start. -
Laptop Thief May Go To Prison For Life
jamers replied to Saint_Michael's topic in General Discussion
Think about this for a minute, in countries where they cut your hand off for stealing bread...people still steal the bread right? We know this because people are still getting hands cut off in fact that is the mild end of the spectrum. In some countries it is the law that a man can kill his wife if she goes with another man (supposed to restore the mans honor). Maybe the guy who stole the laptop had good reason, you never know what drives people to do the things they do. Under some circumstances it is acceptable to kill, (war, self defense...) so the law can't simply execute everyone who kills someone else. Why 3 strikes anyway? Is it because in baseball you get 3 and you're out? How about the death penalty for anyone caught stealing apple pie. Call it protection of national security.Does the 3 strikes count for minors too? "Billy, that's the third time you extorted lunch money from Robert, I'm afraid I'm going to have to give you the maximum penalty allowed by law." Meanwhile we learn that Billy was collecting on a crack debt to keep himself from getting beaten up by older dealers. In cases like this, people are not found guilty because they are forced under threat of violence to do something illegal. What ever happened to "people are not supposed to be imprisoned for non-violent offences"? According to Bush the reason he is against Kyoto is the economy would suffer and many jobs would be lost. Well, looks like the same excuse for the sad state of the US prison system. Can't relax zero tollerance because all the screws would be out of work. That's pathetic. Everyone caught smoking a joint 3 times get's to go to jail and when any member of government get's caught they will have to change the laws or join them in a maximum security "pound me in the a$$ prison". Sounds like a story I once read called "The Animal Farm". -
just check suite101 , this is exactly what you are suggesting and looks like a sound business plan to me!Many upsides to becoming a contributor and many upsides to starting your own site modeled after suite101Hmm maybe I will start another project myself, this is looking good.

What Is A Black Hole (another Theory To Them)
jamers replied to Saint_Michael's topic in General Discussion
I think black hole are links to other dimensions and that is why they spew particles that they can't "consume" out either side. (that's the part that looks like an axle sticking right out of the center in opposite directions, actually slightly funnel shaped)I saw a documentary last night on black holes and there was a part showing how a sun get's eaten up by a black hole. I was surprised to learn it takes millions of years to happen even once it has begun. What was even more surprising is how the reversal of the poles of the earth happens and has happened in the past! This thing was four hours long and called something like "waking up to zero point energy" or some such title. Crappy presentation skills but very interesting anyway. Something to think about... the fragments we saw smash into Jupiter seem to have caused the huge storm (spot on Jupiter we all have seen before) to reverse directions! Just what was it that crashed and where did it come from, and why did it split into about 20 pieces before crashing into the planet? -
Another user recently posted an idea based on users submitting quality articles to an engine that populates additional pages to a website thus having the user community contribute to the ever expanding site (set up like an online directory or WIKI etc.).Sure it's been done but it's still a good thing when you have an idea that might gain momentum because of it's design in the first place. Kind of like Xisto asking users to post in exchange for something they value. This is a good arrangement because there is a level of respect among users and the quality is pretty good (from what I've seen in my short time here).Thing is, you need to always come up with ways to get ahead of the big players or try to gain on the competition a bit so what about the quality control of posts in a system as described in my last paragraph? What are some ways to control to content creation engine? (aside from screening every post or having moderators are there any other good ideas on how to do this?) One extreme would be to screen applicants so you know who they are for sure. Like MD you verify the PHD is real or some such thing and then from then on simply trust the posts from this doctor guy... Maybe check once in a while to make sure he hasn't flipped his noodle and started posting nasty things. A model to consider is DMOZ but when you add the site structure as in the first paragraph it is more about content and articles or posts than simply screening entries in a directory. I was an editor of DMOZ, in fact I think I'm still listed and I never received any contact or evidence that I was screened as an applicant. So they really didn't know if I had anything to do with theater automation equipment! Maybe the answer is to structure the system in such a way that the users are the owners with shares etc. and everyone is hungry to earn more profit therefore operate as a really good team.

Go for it, I say. The numbers of internet users is ever increasing and there is always room for more services etc.Copycating is one of the most basic and time tested methods of starting a business. You pretty much can't go wrong using the copycat method. Like you said "small slice" is all the action you need to start and from there on it's a snowball effect with minimal effort compared to traditional brick and mortar businesses. It's a good idea to have a system that feeds itself if only you can nail down the quality control. (maybe you can find a good model for that problem and copycat that too!) You could have departments or sections devoted to categories and sort the user community accordingly. Have doctors all belong to "WIKImd" and laborers "WIKIconstruction" so users have confidence that when they chose to enter a forum there will be people in there who know something about the category. Problem there is screening members to make sure your site maintains quality and keeps out spammers etc. Look at DMOZ and the problems they have had. It is tough to figure out a good way to manage this problem of quality in forums. That would make a good topic.

Hosting With Php hosting with mail() fuctions active
jamers replied to round's topic in Websites and Web Designing
Of course Xisto has the PHP mail. When you get finished collecting credits then activate the subdomain you have chosen, you get a confirmation screen that lists all the good stuff that I can't cut/paste here or I will be punished. You will see everything that is installed on the server including the version of PHP, your FTP host access information etc. Of course you have to keep the credits up or be disabled, so if the question is where is a free host like Xisto which has PHP mail and does not require maintenance, I don't know. Sorry, but I gave up looking when I found Xisto. (by the way the mail function is part of the PHP core so no additional installations are required other than an email system that PHP has access to by way of the PHP.INI config file).Free hosting with PHP, mysql, mail and the like is surely short lived as we have seen over and over again. Stick with a place like Xisto because there is a good business case that is convincing enough to see the future of free hosting. I would much rather contribute in this way than have to put up with banners and constantly changing policies of unscrupulous, fly-bu-night free host sites. Once I put up a site and had 30 days of no banners then I looked one day after the 30 days and there was so much crap on all sides of the site that I couldn't really see the site anymore, it was all moved around. Very bad. Sometimes you can hack a bit with JavaScript and get the screen to move over after the banners load (cool trick) but they might find you eventually. Better to go with Xisto or similar deal, they are more likely to be in for the long haul. -
You don't need a credit card to use paypal. It happens to be one of the options. If you need a credit card but can't get one for lack of good credit then get a paid credit card. I'm in Canada and Money mart offers master cards that you load up with cash. But really, you don't have to get a credit card to use paypal. Just check the website and see all the latest services. Pretty good if you ask me. I don't mind paying 2.9% plus .50 cents or whatever for the service and to receive payment from someone overseas who is using a credit card. Compare with having to pay my bank monthly fees then again to use an automated machine and limited to x# of transactions and on and on, now that's a rip off.

Hey, I'm looking for pre newbiew PHP guides. Stuff like what folder on your host do you need to put your PHP file into. I'm making my first order form to email handler and the tutorial I followed was great but no mention of where to put it or if it matters. Does the code in the HTML page have to reflect a path to the PHP file? Just little thigns like that would be nice. W3schools are great for what they do but lacking on the real basic stuff.

After you are approved for free host account you must activate by going to a link sent in an email. On the confirmation page that appears after the activation script is finished you will see all sorts of data including your web URL and how to access control panel etc. ..At the bottom of the page for those who would rather configure an FTP program like Dreamweaver or CuteFTP you will see the FTP server address listed as:ftp.projectorange.trap17.com.comThis is wrong and should read:ftp.projectorange.trap17.comDo not use passive ftpHost directory is optional (set to public_html or leave blank)If the host directory is left blank then you will be able to access the root folder and any other folders such as PHP, MySQL, logs etc.)

Sounds like the strip loin served at Caseys Bar and Grill... they put one huge onion ring on top of the mashed potatoes. yum

I was wondering if this would work or not. Create some divs or CSS elements of some kind then hide them in the CSS code by using some position hack like -1000px etc. same like you do to preload images, anyway, fill your tags with optimized content with keywords etc. so it will be read by the robots. I remember back in the early '90s many spammers would put pages of text in white on white at the bottom of pages using nonsense keywords to pick up traffic. So I guess it boils down to: Do search engines pick up content in CSS elements regardless of their state or visibility using a browser?

I think it is best to code for standards compliant browsers then as you go, check in IE as well so you know exactly what causes IE to act up and you can fix it on the fly. Much faster than trying to figure out bugs and hacks after everything is done. Sometimes one fix is dependant on another workaround etc. ..I actually code for FF (since it uses the latest version of the Mozilla engine), then check in IE and NS. I used to just check in IE but then I noticed my pure CSS rollover/drop down menu wasn't working in NS even though it worked in FF and IE! Well, the gloves came off and after much pulling of hair, I started to wonder what the heck>?#$% then I saw the version of Mozilla was different even with the latest version of Netscape. Hmmmm Cheaters. Something to do with rendering of pseudo classes within elements that are fixed vs. absolute. I guess fixed elements "cover" pseudo class elements so my menu was looking like it dropped under my content area. Almost had a heart attack because I thought everything was cool and so I gave the URL to my client to look over the site. Lucky for me they all used IE anyway. At least I found that buggy element thing. man what a pain. I could not find anything about it on the net. there are so many bugs in IE I'm considering just boycott development for that piece of junk and tell all my clients "not guaranteed to work in IE browsers" but then I'd be out of work. Maybe additional charges to code for different browsers. Hmm I like that idea.

My Inventions Please post your opinions on my inventions
jamers replied to seez's topic in Science and Technology
Here's a page from my book of inventions. I seem to have one worth recording every week or two.How about a mini hydraulic generator powered LED you just stick on the end of any tap. If your power goes out you always have a little light in the loo so you don't pee on your foot. -
Yep, Dreamweaver is preferred for wysiwig editors but if you ask which is more professional. Neither. It is more professional to use a text editor, insert proper comments in your code, line up your tags the way YOU want them to appear and have a good feeling that you know what every single character in your code is for.I do like Dreamweaver for managing the FTP for all my sites and for times when I need to make a template based site design. (usually for the larger sites)

Let's start a trend to make small compact sites that have function with less junk.More targeted helps. Like one of my sites was just supposed to be a portfolio page for graphics designs that I would use to win bids for freelance design projects. Now I realize it's a good experience visiting a compact site with fewer angles. Suppose I do another compact site for showcasing website designs, use a different name and make that another "division" of Whatever Media and so on...

Voip Not ready for Satellite Broadband yet
jamers replied to Watermonkey's topic in Computer Networks
Where do you live and what kind of modem did you get? I have had great service with my VIOP package. I live in Gatineau, Quebec and I took great pleasure in dumping BELL and Videotron to get my phone rolled into one package with internet access. I recently had my free cable disconnected and that is one of the reasons I went with a new service. I wasn't going to pay almost 100 dollars for phone, TV and internet. Now I get better internet service with much higher speeds than Videotron plus a Canada wide free unlimited long distance with 2 lines, call waiting, call display and all the "*" services for free. For TV, I have found quite a few places on the internet to get free TV and movies on demand, no commercials, no stupid little logos or PIPs flying all over my screen anymore and I can pause M.A.S.H. or whatever I'm watching while I go get a beer or other attitude adjustments. To quote Bill Gates talking about availability of traditionaly broadcast media, "we will laugh at what we had". ...I think I'll go watch some Pink Panther" cartoons, maybe the one where he cuts everything in half with the power saw.
