http://forums.xisto.com/no_longer_exists/ Read the documentation and see whether your camera is supported. Detailed reading: http://www.tldp.org/HOWTO/Webcam-HOWTO/ Another very useful site: http://forums.xisto.com/no_longer_exists/ Reading in German: http://forums.xisto.com/no_longer_exists/
  3. BSD, any flavour, makes a pretty straightforward system. If you can manage a Linux dritro, you'll manage them too. I prefer to see them on my production servers.
  4. Beware: it comes with an integrated bug.
  5. I'm a double foreigner. Where I live (Austria), and here.

  7. A fine place with many current problems, which, hopefully, will vanish soon.
  8. odomike: I like your sense of humour. But there are pretty people everywhere.
  9. You can try the following workaround:Download knoppix, boot the computer with the knoppix cd. It will boot from the CD entirely, no messing up your hard drive. It usually recognizes all old and new hardware. Once you are in KDE, open the konsole, and type su and press enter. Then type dmesg and try to find the information about your graphis card. My hint is that Mandrake might not support it. If this turns out to be the case, and knoppix (debian) is too difficult for you to use, you can try with the latest SuSE, which is as easy to use as Mandrake.
  10. You can also try https://www.avast.com/de-de/index, free for personal use.A decent firewall for Windows is Sygate Personal Firewall.
  11. This is silly. The new Mac OS is excellent, unix-based system. It is light years ahead of Windows. But you have to have a Mac to run it.
  12. With XP Home Edition, you can not be a member of a domain, only of a workgroup. This is, as far as I know, the biggest difference, but I'm sure there are more.
  13. In fact, I have been opening and saving MSWord documents without any problem. I hardly ever use excel, but the website of OpenOffice.org claims that works too. You can even setp the Writer (OpenOffice.org writing component, corresponds to MSWord) to use the Word format as its default
  14. For my home computer, not really. But I always install firewalls when it comes to office work. Then I use OpenBSD or Cisco, if available.
  15. There about 5000 apps for linux, and they all come free of charge. On top of that, there are many commercial packages.
  16. I don't know about you, but I use linux because it is fast, reliable and virus-proof. Above all, it is free, if I may quote: "Free as in freedom, not as in free beer."It can coexist with other operating systems on the same disk. This is not trouble at all.
  17. I am happy with whatever ATI makes.
  18. Where are these facts from? Can you quote the source?
  19. I loved it. I ended up in the taverna of Kiri Tassos, totally drunk and happy.
  20. Well, some you can run with Wine, but a limited number. Linux is primarily a working platform. If you are into gaming, than it won't make much of a change for you. Otherwise...
  21. On the contrary, there are many linux distros that are quite newbish. That statement would make a lot of sense ten years ago, but much has been done in the meantime to make linux easy to use.I don't want to be misinterpreted here: I am not saying that it must be done, but I know many people who are doing that, so I just wanted to offer a useful link.
