  1. well it doesn't really matter whether or not it is a fake, because since then, we've done more significant things than land on the moon, say a few words, and walk around before jumping into a spacecraft and coming back. and besides, if you DO try to prove to everyone that the first landing was a fake, the US government will call press conferences with at least a dozen scientists to explain the suspicious stuff, and then dis you to the best of their ability.
  2. Thanks biscuitrat. It certainly helped me in the way I approach the questions. But it looks as though I will need to re-read the novel, this time more thoroughly.[torture]
  3. Bluesnarfing isn't a new thing. And it seems as though you no longer need a computer. I know of a proof-of-the-concept tool that can run as a J2ME program on a mobile phone to snarf other people's phones. Although their developers have programmed it to be incapable of any REAL damage (e.g cannot send SMS, can only make another phone call that is free of charge etc), you can still use it to gain access to files. Plus it's open-source, meaning hackers can simply edit the source to make it capable of some serious damage. And yes, turn off your phone's bluetooth. Do not just make it hidden, there is an open-source proof-of-the-concept tool that find your phone even if it's hidden. A google search can find a whole load of tools that can turn you into a revered hacker.
  4. well i found the post on Xisto that jlhaslip was talking about. i also made a shout about it after making the post and found from JapserIk that OpaQue had told the members (via the shoutbox) that he was going to upgrade mysql, or something along those lines. It seems that this only applies to the Gamma server according to http://forums.xisto.com/no_longer_exists/ which shows a detailed status of all the xisto servers. The Gamma server's MySQL is shown in RED. My guess is that cPanel is also database-driven and that the database is also hosted on the gamma server. edit: the gamma server is now back online! everything is working perfectly!
  5. Hmm...I personally use SMF but I've been growing increasingly interested in phpBB, particularly version 3. People who currently use my forum tell me they prefer SMF, but that's probably because they haven't used phpBB. I like phpBB's large community, massive array of add-ons, and speed + simplicity. But I also like SMF's organisation, and the advanced features it provides. And the mods/add-ons suit my needs at the moment. I've just obtained a skin from their website that makes my forum look a lot like IPB. It's called Soft MC for those who use SMF.
  6. hi all - i'm going to make this brief.my CMS (drupal 5.0) and forum (SMF 1.1.1) cannot connect to the mysql db. however their files CAN still be accessed. I also tried uploading a file through an ftp client and the file could be accessed.HOWEVER: cpanel cannot be accessed either. it simply loads with a blank page.however both worked earlier today. so is there a problem with the server? and if there is, will it be fixed?
  7. Hi all, Last time I posted here it was about how corrupted my school was. Well I must say, my new English teacher is quite so. It is stereotypical for English teachers to hate plagiarism. Well my English teacher has just plagiarized an entire study guide to give us work to do. It's about the book “The witch of Blackbird Pond” by Elizabeth George Speare. I had expected the questions to be interesting and to actually give me a chance to give a good answer. But this book is just so incredibly boring, and the questions are just so ... annoying. And I doubt many people have read it. I must say, I've never said this with any comprehension/novel study task, but .. I can't do it! Here's the worst offender: I think perhaps because the protagonist, Kit Tyler is a new character who does not know anybody within the novel, and so the first chapter must set the scene for the rest of the novel. Hence the reader must be introduced to these friends and enemies, as they will be with Kit for the rest of the novel. So in a sense, the characters are important simply because they were in the first chapter. Sounds a bit incoherent, but this book is really doing my brain in. Can someone help me with this question? Thanks in advance to anyone who can help me. Though I can understand if nobody can help, as this book is just so...BAD.
  8. I want Windows Vista Ultimate if I could get it. But my parents won't let me. So realistically, I'd say Home Premium Academic Upgrade. Either that, or I'd buy a new computer. My parents, being Chinese, support Lenovo. So I hope I can get a ThinkPad with Home Premium installed. If that doesn't happen, I think I'll just get Ubuntu. I don't want Home Basic. There's no point getting it. My parents say they'll get a new laptop sometime soon. If it's a laptop with Home Basic, I'll just install Ubuntu on the old laptop. It's, in some ways better than Vista.
  9. I wouldn't like it. It would be extremely boring. But I'd survive. For a start, I'd go out and do some sport. I barely do right now, though I'm apparently in the top level of fitness according to this ranking system. I'd then use my computer for other things. and I'd ring my friends instead of using MSN. It might be better. I'd probably also watch more TV. And do my homework to a higher standard. Although I wouldn't say I'm a problem student right now, I could definitely do better. That's about it. I would prefer it if there WAS internet. And I don't think they're going to take it away any time soon. But I'd survive, and I'd get used to it after a while.
  10. Well for some reason, when I am buried, I would like my body to be in as pristine a condition as possible. So I'd say Lethal Injection, although I think I might have a slight, quite minor, needle-phobia. The reason they use a clean needle is because it's extremely hard to buy a needle that hasn't been sterilised. They use standard medical equipment. And the reason for swabbing the area with alcohol is because it helps the veins rise to the surface. there have been several cases of Lethal Injection being excruciating, due to the anaesthetic (sodium thiopental, i think) wearing off to the stage where you feel pain but can't move. How convenient. You then feel this extreme burning sensation as they pump the muscle paralysis drug into your system to arrest your breathing muscles. In some US states they also use a third drug specifically for the purpose of causing cardiac arrest. As for firing squad, it would be extremely bloody. I wouldn't like my mother or any other family member to have to collect my body. And because they fire 6 bullets simultaneously, it does hurt for a fraction of a second. And I don't like the sound of spending my last moments alive having to wait, blindfolded as they load the guns and shout "FIRE". Gas chambers use Cyanide Gas to poison you. Your last moments would be in a gas chamber breathing in toxic gas. From reports, it suffocates you. Not a very pleasant feeling.I reckon the best way to die (not execution) is dying in sleep. It is painless, and your last moments alive are lying on your own bed in the comfort of your own home. Oh, and I want to go to heaven, not hell.
  11. A few things to note: Firefox uses the Gecko engine. It is supposed to render pages more accurately than any other browser engine, but it still can't pass the ACID2 test. the ACID2 test is a test set by the web standards project to test the accuracy of the rendering of pages by browsers. you can find it at http://www.webstandards.org/action/acid2/ . The Gecko engine in my experience, is faster than IE's engine (called Titan i think, or Trident, or at least something beginning with T) and about as fast as the Presto engine (used by Opera). But its API allows for extensions, plugins etc like no other browser on Earth. It is also easier to release patches for. due to the way it's programmed. And because it's open source with a wide community, if you find a bug, it will be fixed extremely quickly, and you can expect to find support easily. You can also modify and distribute it, and claim it as your own. It also has many loyal fans, and many sites have been specifically designed to be best viewed in this browser. Some sites have been specifically designed to work best in Firefox (that's why some people may say it renders pages more accurately than Opera, although it probably doesn't.) Opera, as mentioned above, uses the Presto engine (presto is italian for "fast"). It passes the ACID2 test, the second one after the KHTML engine (used by Safari and Konqueror). It's quite fast, but suffers from IE syndrome, where it waits until the majority of the web page has been loaded before displaying it. It's API does not allow for extensions as easily as Firefox does, and it's community is more narrow. And you don't get the freedom to copy, modify and distribute the browser like you do with Firefox, Konqueror and other GPL-licenced browsers. And you will have noticed it isn't as well supported either. And it doesn't have as many loyal fans as Firefox. IE uses some engine starting with "T". It has an atrocious API, and several sites have to be specially designed for viewers to see them using IE. Because of its tight integration with Windoze, it takes a long time to release a patch, and they are usually of a much larger size than Firefox's or Opera's. Because you don't have the freedom to see its source code, you can't do anything about it either. It has a VERY small community and virtually no loyal supporters. Oh, and it fails the ACID2 test. (what a surprise). My preference? Firefox. I just like it. Full stop.
  12. Try either Joomla! or Drupal. Both are quite well designed. Drupal is extremely secure compared to many other Content Management Systems. And it can be used for News sites as it can automatically publish/unpublish at a set time. Joomla can do the same. They also both support RSS syndication.Try them.
  13. No wonder 15 of my credits disappeared in less than a week. And I thought the mods thought I spammed but I didn't get any warnings. And the posts seem to have JUST my posts missing. Now I see why. Thanks.By the way, I really like the new IPB. It really puts some distance between IPB and other forum software.
  14. It sucks. It is over-shiny, and it is slow. Gmail - simple is best. On my connection speed GMAIL is much faster. And it gives you more storage space. With less annoying ads.
  15. Walmart is trying to buy into our country, but they're being halted at every step. I personally dislike Walmart for trying to eat up all those innocent small businesses, but I guess, in the US it would be a different story, with Walmart being the biggest shopping centre giant in the world. When Walmart arrives in Australia, which it no-doubt will, eventually, most people will be boycotting the giant, largely because they believe that small businesses deserve the chance. And I think I might, too, unless it has super high quality goods for a super-low price. I remember a few years ago, when Walmart tried to eat its way into Europe, but got halted, especially in Germany, by the German supermarket operater Aldi. I've been to a few Aldi stores and they have extremely high quality goods for a low price. If Walmart wants to succeed in Australia, where people are more loyal to small businesses, it must learn from Aldi's success. It must buy produce from local farmers, and show its support for Australian businesses. If not, the world's largest supermarket giant will once again be halted by small companies which believe in moral values.
  16. Anybody listened to American Idiot by Greenday? It sums up a LOT of what's being discussed here.I live in Australia but my parents came from China. And they're extremely patriotic. I have mixed feelings.I too, believe that the likes of George WTF Bush should really start minding their own business. His own people are dying thousands of miles from home, and he's worrying about another country wanting to save approximately one week of time and destroying their OWN property. The debris obviously didn't hit America, Australia, or Europe's satellites. Nor did they hit the satellites of other countries. Our Prime Minister called in the Chinese Ambassador to explain. I reckon he's the type of person who would follow George Bushfire Bush no matter what. Name the last time he objected to Bush's ideas. And remember how, a few years ago, the USA sent a spy plane over China? I can't remember the exact details but the Chinese jet pilot who went up to face off the spy plane ejected his seat after an attack or something and vanished. I don't think the Chinese did anything against the US.But the USA has, for a long time, disliked China, according to my parents. So I guess it's just another move to dis them.
  17. THAT IS AMAZING!I don't have ANY reservations about it! It's GREAT! I like the black, I like the choice of colours, and I like the lighting and effects! It's one of the best I've seen in a LONG time, and believe me, I've seen a LOT of wallpapers. But this one just blows the rest away. I LOVE IT! *right click - set as wallpaper*
  18. Is that one of those Central Authentication Systems, where you login once and get authenticated by all the applications you have installed that require logins? Because that's what I've been after for a LOONG time, and I've posted here about it too. So IS it one of those systems, and if it is, THANK YOU SO MUCH! but how do you get programs to intergrate with it?
  19. [sarcasm]I think your poll is so controversial you will end up with hate mail and death threats.[/sarcasm]You included most games there and that's probably enough. Because despite what people here say, EVERYBODY will have their favourite games, and if you designed the poll to impress EVERYBODY you would have approximately....calculating....9786354535753547*10 to the power of 45657 different alternatives. But I DO agree with others in that you SHOULD have put Final Fantasy there, and perhaps you should have called it "MY ultimate GAMES poll" instead of "THE ultimate poll".
  20. only1yoni, that was your first post. so i take it you're here to advertise your service? and it's still in construction, with two days left. what forum package do you host? phpBB, SMF or IPB?the big problem with most forum hosts is that they use one database and file set for ALL forums.this poses a few major problems:you will not be able to access the files, hence you can't install skins. if you do, they will be installed for everybody. you cannot access the MySQL database, halting any thoughts of manual edits.usually the only things you can upload are images, to prevent the forum host being turned into a webhost. only1yoni, if you allow members to access the files and MySQL db, and host IPB, I will DEFINITELY be joining. But I will keep my hosting account here on Xisto, because you cannot beat their hosting. And anyway, I doubt you will be allowed file access.
  21. well YOU'D be sad if you were stuck in an animal shelter for that long. also, it's spelt "terrier". KuBi, please come back! please rename the topic. thank you. and something about the word "bull" in the name of the species tells me it's quite fierce. and being a male that hasn't been neutered...if you're going there, have a look at the golden retrievers and border collies. they tend to have a quieter temperament and are better suited as family pets.
  22. vietonline, perhaps i may quote your sig? "want to exchange link with MY site PM me"? forgive me for any misunderstanding but are you saying it's your site? and that you are a former stanford student? also i believe that site works simply by: using ViewBar Beta (note it's in beta) to track your search habits. So perhaps if you were going onto online banking, they would be tracking the content on that site, possibly your transactions etc? Or at least the name of the bank you use, determined from the URL? They would also be able to tell what game sites you use, what websites you enjoy visiting etc. it's like spyware, except they pay you. taking your credit card details and enjoying it. so it's like being payed $2.50 an hour to allow a furniture designer into your house to observe you for a month so that they will know what furniture is best. i don't like the sound of it.
  23. Don't you mean free LUNCH? Charities provide them.. anyway, you can try survey completion, taking advantage of "special offer" sites and putting ads on your site. for a start, get a hosting account. you might need to do a bit more posting. unless all 4 of your OTHER posts are 500 word essays. then submit a free hosting request and wait for an admin (usually BuffaloHELP) to approve. the post made by the admin will give you further instructions. then register with an ad company, such as Google AdSense, and then simply put ads on your site. but TRY to have decent content on your site. I think it might be a violation of Xisto policies to have a website filled with ads. but i'm not sure. but it's not a nice thing to do to just have ads on your site. and your english is fine, we can understand it. - my $0.02.
  24. their levels of tech expertise never cease to amaze me. i thought they were this little kiddy site which was easily hacked and easily cheated upon. for a start, I thought you could get special things by modifying the URL. well they use phtml (combination of php and html, though they could just use .php), which is extremely similar to php, to make it near-impossible to cheat.but yes, their site is of quite poor quality, and too flashy for my liking. and it's littered with ads. too bad for the site their admins haven't heard of anti-leeching. i used ZA to stop all the banners and pop-ups.their games, powered by Adobe Flash are, uh, inexpensive. in some cases they look like a 10-minute job.and i agree with salamangkero, their battledome is even more basic. obviously they don't want the little kiddies to be bashed on the head by their parents after wetting their pants watching their cute little kacheeks scratching the life out of another pet. but you must admit, after all, the programmers at neopets aren't bad, being able to design a site like THAT from scratch. but you also have to admit it's targetted at those who sleep with teddy bears.
  25. well before i came here, i had a host called 110mb.com.it's got php5, mysql, and 2GB of space and 100GB of bandwidth per month for free, and daily backups of your data with no ads or forum posting attached.the downside is that they don't provide cPanel or a script installer, or postgresql, nor do they provide https login to your cpanel. and let's face it, cPanel has some great features and it makes it easy to implement them. but the biggest downside that had me looking for a new host and eventually coming to Xisto was that they turned php safe mode ON. this meant that you could not use the php sendmail function among other things. nor could i install smf. the admin told me it was because i had safe mode enabled. to disable safe mode, you needed to submit your ID to the host.but let's face it, i didn't want to submit my ID but a host of others did.so if you're willing to submit your ID or do not require safe mode to be off, and if you can live without cPanel or an encrypted login, and without PostgreSQL, AND can live with an SMF-based forum with a community nowhere near as helpful or quick in replying (although there's nothing that says you MUST post there) as Xisto's, 110mb.com is the perfect option for you.
