  1. Service tweaks do reduce the startup time. However remember to defragment the drive where Windows is installed often (at least once a week). Also without using bootvis you can perform the exact similar tasks : 1. Start -> Run type : defrag c: -b Assuming Windows XP to be installed in drive C. Then again Start->Run type : rundll32.exe advapi32.dll,ProcessIdleTasks This process run's in background (no visible window), but look for the hard disk activity led .... takes some time to complete.
  2. Also you can backup all your 5 registry hives : system, software, sam, security, default. This will be helpful when a corrupted registry has prevented you from starting up or booting into Windows. ERUNT isa free software that backs up all the 5 registry hives. (It can restore backup also). Now, for a disaster recovery step, after you have backed up with ERUNT, open the folder, you'll find the 5 files : default SAM SECURITY software system copy/burn the 5 files to a CD/DVD. In case when you cannot bootup due to a corupted registry : 1. Start Windows with the Windows CD, and go to Recovery console. Assuming D to be the backup drive where the files are stored : type the following commands in recovery console : md tmpcopy c:\windows\system32\config\system c:\windows\tmp\system.bakcopy c:\windows\system32\config\software c:\windows\tmp\software.bakcopy c:\windows\system32\config\sam c:\windows\tmp\sam.bakcopy c:\windows\system32\config\security c:\windows\tmp\security.bakcopy c:\windows\system32\config\default c:\windows\tmp\default.bakdelete c:\windows\system32\config\systemdelete c:\windows\system32\config\softwaredelete c:\windows\system32\config\samdelete c:\windows\system32\config\securitydelete c:\windows\system32\config\defaultcopy d:\system c:\windows\system32\config\systemcopy d:\software c:\windows\system32\config\softwarecopy d:\config c:\windows\system32\config\samcopy d:\security c:\windows\system32\config\securitycopy d:\default c:\windows\system32\config\default Now restart normally. And delete the C:\Windows\Tem folder. You can also import a registry hive through regedit, modify the changes you made and restore them. Alternately a copy of the 5 registry hives are located in C:\Windows\Repair directory. However they are the hives when Windows is first installed on a system, so they don't contain any new software, custom settings that you have applied after installing Windows.

    Security Software?

I use NOD32 + AdwareSE + Spyware Blaster + Spybot S&D + Outpost firewall + HijackThis, and also sometimes the free Ewido scans. Seems to me the best so far. Hasn't mixed a single thing for the past 15 months.
  4. Also look in Event Log -> Application and Event Log -> System for more errors, or some more information about the errors.Launch Event Log : Start -> Run -> type eventvwr.msc
  5. Read a phone number from where ??And how is the function supposed to return the phone number to the caller ?
  6. Another method is to use killbox. http://www.bleepingcomputer.com/download/windows/ Then just open killbox, browse and select the files you wan't to delete, and select the "delete on reboot option", and click the red X button, reboot, and the selected files will be deleted.
  7. What exact error are you receiving ?Are you getting a page not found error ?I would start by cleaning all cookies and temporary internet files. Also clear your DNS cache.Start -> Run -> type ipconfig /flushdnsAlso check your Host file that the specific site is not perhaps accidentally blocked. A HijackThis log file will quickly analyze your internet settings and your host files.
  8. Samsung has made its entry into the smartphone market by launching the SGH-i320. It is a triband GSM (900 / 1800 / 1900) Windows Mobile 5.0 powered smartphone features like : QWERTY keyboard and looks similar to the slim Motorola Q. A large 2.2 inches LCD screen with 1.3 mega-pixel resolution camera, .. wow.. along with cool features such as Bluetooth and high-quality dual speakers. Plus it allows users to send and receive e-mails instantly, when connected to a Microsoft Exchange Server 2003. The phone will surely compete with the Motorola Q having similar features but lacking Wi-Fi. http://www.samsung.com/us/ News : http://www.samsung.com/us/
  9. AMD has released details of its next-generation desktop CPU interface, namely Socket AM3, to its OEM partners. Also suprisingly AMd revealed that AM2 will be compatible with AM3 CPU packages also. Also, recent roadmaps have confirmed that AM3, AMD's future desktop CPU socket, will not be backwards compatible with AM2-package CPUs. R From the most recent AMD roadmap is also clear that AM3 "supports either DDR2 SDRAM or DDR3 SDRAM, but not on the same motherboard." This will definetly be a great news for upgraders, as there is a very clear upgrade path: CPU, motherboard, and then memory. Hey ... wait .. but then this also means that AM3 CPUs will have both DDR2 and DDR3 support!!. DDR3, like DDR2, has 240-pin, but the two formats are not pin-compatible. 12. As mentioned, A hijack this log file would be very helpful. Also how long was it since you last formatted your PC ? Windows do have a bad habit bloating up every 5~7months :)Also how many process are running in Task Manager under normal circumstances ? Have you de-fragmented the hard drives ?
  13. Doubled which part ?? ........... well the only opinion I could add present is .. just hope that the prices would be reasonable here in India. Otherwise it would be very hard to get one !! As for which person's did them and from which country ... all the details were given in the Patent article link .. which now does not work. The link seemed to be removed. This was actually the patent link : appft1.uspto.gov/netacgi/nph-Parser=DN/20060099461 I did'nt remember which country the people belonged, buy Segate defiantly got the patent. I wonder why they took off the patent link !!!!
