  1. The single seat F/A-18 Hornet is an all-weather twin-engine multi-mission fighter. Mc Donnell Douglas developed the aircraft at the cost of 39.5 million dollars. On May 2, 1975, Mc Donnell Douglas aircraft had extensive background in designing a rrier fighter he main contractor for the F/A-18 and with Northrop as the subcontractor. It took seven long years to design and complete the F/A-18 Hornet. The F/A-18 Hornet was designed to perform both air to air-to ground missions. The construction work was divided into a 60/40 spit. Mc Donnell Douglas was responsible for the forward fuselage, wings, stabilizer, landing gear, the arresting gear, and the two engines. The F/A Hornet received its name from the Secretary of the navy W. Graham Clayton on March 1,1977. Navy ships were called Hornet so Mr. Clayton decided the F-18 would be called the ?Hornet.? The F/A stands for ?fighter? and ?attack? mission. The first flight made by the F/A Hornet took place on November 18, 1978 with Jack Krings at the controls. The test run ran 50 minutes at 550 m/h at the altitude of 24,000 feet. Krings found the aircraft very stable and easy to handle. Almost all of the flight-testing was performed at the NAS Patuxent River. There were more than 3,000 test flights and over 6,000 flying hours. The test program ran two shifts six days a week for both contractors and subcontractors. There were only two serious accidents that occurred during the flight tests. The first one was on September 8, 1980 with pilots Jack Krings and Lt.Col Gary Post. They were in the F/A-18 en route to Spain when the right turbine was rapidly heating up and the left turbine jammed. The men were forced to eject from their seats. On November 14, 1980 the second serious accident occurred. Lt.Col. Brannon, a naval test pilot lost control of the plane at 20,000 feet and crashed into Chesapeake Bay. A spin recovery switch was added to the flight computer?s logic on all future Hornet?s. The F/A-18 is used with the U.S. Navy and Marine Corp in Canada, Australia, Spain, Kuwait, Finland, Switzerland, and Malaysia used with the F/A-18. These countries found them to be safe, reliable, and easy to take care. The Hornet became very popular with the pilots because the aircraft could be converted from fighter to strike mode and back again. It was easy as flipping a switch. The F/A-18 proved to be exactly what it was designed to be a reliable and versatile strike fighter during Operation Desert Storm. There had been at least eight known combats that the Hornets have participated in. In August 1990, Saddam Hussein invaded and occupied Kuwait. President George H. Bush wanted to intervene and try to stop Hussein from overrunning other Middle East countries. The U.S. Navy flew ninety Hornets and U.S. Marine Corp flew eighty four Hornets. Only three Hornets planes were lost during the war. On the first day of Operation Desert Storm, two F/A-18?s, each carrying four 2,000 lb bombs, shot down two Iraqi MIG-21?s and bombed enemy target. This was the only time F/A-18 pilots ever fired in anger at enemy aircrafts. Other pilots have attached targets. The third Hornet lost was not due to hostile action. It was January 17, 1991 when the F/A-18 claims their first air-to-air victory during Operation Desert Storm. The cockpit is the main navigation tool. This is where all the information comes together for the use by the pilot. In order to have an effective cockpit design one must begin with a clean sheet of paper. In the F/A-18 the cockpit was divided into three areas: a. weapon and sensor, b. communications and identification, c. system mode and miscellaneous. The pilot can use his left hand to control the throttle and his right hand to control the switch for weapons. The best striking feature of the Hornet?s cockpit is the minimal number of switches and dials. The F/A-18 has a digital control with excellent handling pilots can fly with ease. The design was to cut down on the pilot?s workload. The Hornet has nine external weapon stations. It carries a wide range of weapons for any modern combat aircraft. The aircraft has its dual air-to-air and air-to-ground roles. A M-61 AI Vulcan 20mm cannon located in the nose is capable of firing up to 6,000 rounds per minute. It is a close range weapon. The AIM-120 is radar-seeking missile that is mounted on the wing station. The AIM-7F is another radar-guided missile. The heat-seeking missile carried on the wing tip. The AGM-62 was a TV-guided missile located on the outboard wing station. The above four mentioned are air-to-air weapons. The AGM-65 warhead was powered by rocket motor. The AGM-84 was a turbo-jet powered missile carries on the outboard station. The AGM-88 is a high spelled anti-radiation missile on another outboard station. Then finally yet importantly the rocket powered bomb. The weight of the aircrafts are 51,900 lbs. Length of the aircraft is 56 feet. Its wing is 37.60 ft long. It stands 15 ? feet high. When the aircraft is empty, it weighs 49,050 lbs. When the aircraft is fully loaded, it can weigh 43,500 lbs. The aircraft can fly up to speed at 1,305 mph. It has one crew member. The F/A-18 was a very thought out aircraft. It fought in many combats and is still in existence. Today, the F/A-18 still flies in combats. The F/A-18 have proved to be reliable and with low maintenance. A new plane called the Super Hornet now follows the aircraft. This project inspired me to write about the F/A-18 Hornet because I like watching the Discovery Wings on cable TV, when it talks about aircrafts. Through watching the specials, I plan to be an engineer in the future Notice from BuffaloHELP: Refrain from posting essay that was already submitted to your educational institution. 2. Safety Seat Belts & Car Accidents "Car accidents are the leading cause of death, as well as loss of work time." Wearing seat belts will reduce injuries and save lives. It can also save millions of dollars for American businesses. In 1984, car crashes left about 4,200 workers with lost jobs. It also affects the lost of productivity, insurance, and medical costs to those individuals that do not wear their seat belt. The second leading cause of death is heart attacks. It accounts for twelve percent of death in the U.S. Traffic safety facts for 2001 stated that seventy-two percent of the people are wearing safety seat belts. It is up from sixty-seven percent in December 1999 and up from sixty two percent in May 1998. Each year, the number of people wearing seat belts increases and the rate of fatalities decreases. Those who don't buckle should understand the risks involved. Many people in vehicles, who do not use seat belts, end up in terrible fatalities, but those that have seat belts properly fastened have the improved ability to avoid fatalities. Because of the increasingly amount of drivers and passengers, they should always properly wear the seat belt. Seat belts in automobiles are a very important safety feature. Over the past ten years, highway injuries and fatalities have dropped. The reason for the decline is because more and more people are wearing seat belts. Seat belts hold your body in place while in and stopped motion. When a traffic accident occurs, the car suddenly comes to a stop and the driver and passenger who are sitting in the front and who are not wearing seat belts keep moving forward towards the steering wheel, windshield, or other parts of the interior. It has been proven through many crash tests with dummies crashing into windshields and dashboards to convince people wearing a seat belt is a safe idea. The seat belt will prevent one from getting badly injured or death. Passengers in the back of a car who are unbelted will also endanger their safety, but they will also injury the people in the front seat because the unbelted rear passengers can hit the front seat hard enough to injure the people seated in them. The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration says, "safety belts, when used, reduce the risk of fatal injury to front-seat passenger car occupants by forty-five percent. From 1975 through 1999, an estimated 123,213 lives were saved by safety belts." Seat belts also prevent one from being thrown from the car. In 1996 only one percent of restrained passenger car occupants were ejected as opposed to twenty percent of unrestrained passenger's occupants. In total crashes, nearly seventy three percent of the occupants were ejected from cars resulted in death from not being restrained. Imagine hearing your parents had been ejected out of the vehicle and is suffering in critical condition because they didn't have their seat belt on for a short trip to work. That's why seat belts should be worn at all times to prevent injuries or death. The first seat belt law began in 1984, in the state of New York. It proved to have saved more lives from accidents. As of December 1999, forty nine states including the District of Columbia had used the seat belt law in effect. In 1999 thirty three states, police officers were permitted to write citations only after a car was stopped for some other traffic violation. There are currently sixteen states that have the primary enforcement, allowing police officers to write citations whenever they are seen not wearing a seat belt. In 1978, the state of Tennessee was the first state to impose the child safety restraint law. Not only is it important for adults to wear seat belts, but also children who are under the ages of six must have their own safety seat. The first mandatory use of child restrain went into effect in 1978 in the State of Tennessee. Children under the age of twelve must not sit in the front seat due to the air bags. The International Highway Traffic Safety Administration says, "From 1975 through 1999 an estimated 4,500 lives were saved by child restraints." Adults who do not use seat belts are sending a deadly message to children. Parents are role models to children when growing up. They need to set examples of buckling themselves so children will also do the same. National crash shows it is more likely that if a driver is buckled up children riding in the same vehicle are buckled up ninety four percent of the time. However when the driver is unbuckled, children buckled up only thirty percent of the time. The adults really have to buckle up to make sure their children are buckled up so it would not lead to fatal injures or even lead to death. Whether you are a child or an adult one must always wear safety seat belts while riding in a motor vehicle or on a bus no matter how short or long the ride might be. Many people believe that if they are going to die in a crash, safety seat belts will not affect the crash outcome. Unfortunately, the threat of seriously being injured or dying is not enough to persuade some people to always buckle up. They only proven way to get these high-risk people to use seat belt is to issue tickets and fine to them. We need to let them know that they are not only hurting themselves but they are financially harming everyone else around them. It is important to know that accidents resulting in being unbuckled raise the cost of our health premiums and taxes. However, the risk of getting into an accident on a short trip is just as great if not greater than on a longer drive away from home. I know it is hassle to have to put your safety belt on for a short distance drive like going to a friend's house. We know that at least seventy percent of serious accidents occur within twenty five miles away from home. Some people claim that wearing seat belts are uncomfortable and cause wrinkles in their clothing. It would be worth the trouble to try to adjust the seat belt to one likely and to take the wrinkled clothes to the cleaners than to risk the chance of a severe injury or possible death. Many people don't realize that they are affecting many others such as taxpayers whose taxes that are being raised each year. It also raises the cost of health care. We could save billions of dollars on medical and employment issues. The money saved could have been used for other important issues. So BUCKLE UP, it could be your own life!!!
  3. ? Genius is 1 percent inspiration and 99 percent perspiration.? Thomas Edison was born in Milan, Ohio on February 11, 1847. Thomas was one of seven children. He went to school for 3 months in 1855 and then he had home schooling by his mother. He read Shakespeare, history books, the bible, and science books. His first science book he read was the School of Nature Philosophy. This book was full of experiments that Edison could do at home. From that moment on, science was all that was in his mind. Edison was twelve years old when he got his first job at the new railroad. He was a newsboy. He would go up and down the train selling newspapers and even refreshments like peanuts, popcorn, chewing gum, and candy. He would yell out the choices to catch the passenger?s attention. He did this because the family needed money, and he needed money for his chemicals and for his experiments. Edison was sick with a fever. This illness may have been the cause of his deafness later in his life. One day, while he was running to climb into a freight car with both his arms full of newspapers. Stevenson, the conductor grabbed him by both ears and lifted him into the car. Edison felt something snap in his head. Soon after, he became deaf. Thomas A. Edison invented 1,093 inventions. His first invention was when he was 21 years old. He invented the vote-recorder in 1869. Thomas was paid $40,000 by Western Union to buy his improvements. Thomas Edison?s favorite invention was the phonograph. He also invented the light bulb in which people have been trying to invent. It took him two years to invent the light bulb. Edison died at the age of 84 on October 18, 1931. He was buried in Orange, New Jersey. He left behind six children. He had three from his first wife Mary Stilwell and three from his second wife Mina Miller.
  4. Personally, I love the game! It has exellent graphics, sound, and gameplay. Vehicles such as helicopters and planes difficult in the begining, and but are extremely fast and deadly when better adapted to it. I've played about 200 hours of Battlefield 2 and I think its all worth it. Battlefield 2 regularly has about 800+ servers online everyday. There are wonderful ways to track your battlefield stats at http://battletracker.com/index.php?form=PlayerSearch The only downfall with this game is the need of a pretty decent computer to run it, otherwise unable to play. Also, you need a DVD drive on your computer to install and is needed while playing. Otherwise, Battlefield is really good and you should try if you want a game like many favortes of gamers, Counter Strike.
  5. Two applicants walk into your office, ready to present themselves for their worthiness through their first job interview. Applicant one comes from a wealthy family background, excelling in many areas of the educational field with the aid of prestigious academic schooling. Applicant two comes from a lower class background, who possesses an impressive resume as well, but with a few demerits compared to applicant one. After a tough decision, you end the dilemma by hiring applicant two, despite his or her weaknesses compared to applicant one. What you have just witnessed is the act of affirmative action; the admission of minorities and other underprivileged groups because of past hardships or circumstances. Many people have argued over this controversial topic, should affirmative action be legalized? Affirmative action should be allowed to a reasonable degree, as long as the statistics of an applicant are rationally good for his or her position in the economic ladder. Comparing two applicants with diverse social statuses should be taken into careful consideration. In some instances, people may argue that this practice is an unfair and biased judgment fueled by the ?empathy? factor, but it is also unfair and biased to choose the person with a brighter societal background. In this case, the more unfortunate candidate is affected with a disadvantage. Because of this restriction, the applicant?s personal standards are also limited. For example, a higher-class interviewee who has had additional tutoring in the past and better schooling, as opposed to a lower-class party who is not as well educated or advanced, may have different individual criteria and boundaries. Their surrounding environment plays a big role in contributing to their own educational limitations. It is typically unfair to certain people for they are up against another applicant who has had the additional boost. Finally there is the societal class-system in which the candidates were raised in. If the applicants were originated from similar ranks, if not identical, then the outcomes of their records would be noticeably different. The choice between two potentially imbalanced applicants should be interviewed according to their own benchmarks. Overall, affirmative action should be legalized, but this act should not be abused in any way. In brief, there is a big difference in impartiality when put side by side to the past. Over the years, affirmative action and liberal preferences have grown to be beneficial privileges, as well as timely advancements in the world we live in.
  6. I think that fits my description pretty well for me, but i'm not sure how experimental I am. Just wondering, was this personality test made by you? If not, where was it found? Its very interesting.
  7. I use the free verision of AVG 7.1.394. So far its been protecting my computer wonderfully. It also enables you to search the virus's description and steps to remove it successfully. And, don't forget my most favorite feature is the quick notification of a virus detected in my temporary internet files Its a great free antivirus program everyone should have!
  8. Well, it starts off as a labor of birth where a mother selflessly gives birth to a child.... that child grows up as a person and it is human nature for that child to adapt to the world by any means necessary to survive. And as a person the child will put down and suck up to anyone that might help them win in the game called "life", and it is human nature to have an impulse to be the best and have the best. And when one gets those things what is left to do is... nothing, AND that is what human nature is NOTHING, and nothing is what we follow everyday. They say those that lead are the best and those that follow are nothing, But the people that lead will have nothing to lead if there were no one to follow, BUT it is human nature to look down upon others when you're the one leading, the best is the king, the king is the land, but the land belongs to the people. So why is it that the king rules over the people, who owns the land, which is the king, again it is human nature to look up to someone else when one thinks that the person is the best, it?s true that the king is the best, but only its because he thinks/believes that he is the best. Brings me to my new point, belief, in believing something one thinks that "thing" needless to say what it is, that "thing" is true, and no one can question belief, so the king believes he is the best, and the people believes that the king is the best so therefore the king becomes the best. No questions asked, but what would happen if someone were to question the king?s beliefs... nothing because the king believes he is the best so he is the best, but when the king is being questioned, and he questions himself asking whether or not he really is the best, the king loses his belief and loses his position as being the best, because it is human nature to question oneself when oneself is being questioned, and when the king gains uncertainty he loses his beliefs, and his power of being the best. In conclusion, it is human nature to do anything to be the best, to look down on someone when said a person is the best, and to lose their position as being the best when they are being questioned. The cycle of human nature goes *gaining power, abusing power, and losing power* to stop the cycle one must not abuse his or her power and not declare themselves as the best because when being the best, they are with the worst.
  9. Since the 8th grade I have become more involved in writing, and when I have gotten to high school I enrolled in a journalism class and loved it dearly. As for the next school year, I have planned to hop onto the school newspaper team. So currently my main goal is to become a journalist and write for a major newspaper. The thought of interviewing, researching, and traveling just gets me more in touch with the world (or at least my surroundings). So far it's been a good experience; the knowledge you obtain may be very useful in the future. And maybe in my spare time I can hone my writing skills by writing novels (that is if I have time, and if possible). But these are my current aspirations, for they are scheduled to change.-ghaskleAL (Member of Frugo Productions)
  10. I prefer eating with my some kind of respectful friends because I get nervous sitting all alone without someone to talk to. Everytime when I'm alone in a public place and see everyone else talking to someone they know, I become left out and tend to look everyone in the eye wierd. If I am depressed or upset, I would really want to be alone.
