New Computer What do you recommend?
FirefoxRocks replied to FirefoxRocks's topic in Hardware Workshop
After a few months of checking the weekly offers from Dell, reading input from this topic, this topic as well as this topic, we have finally purchased our new desktop system. Here are the technical specifications on it: Processor: Intel Core 2 Duo E8200 2.66 GHz Hard Drive: 500 GB Memory: 4 GB Windows Vista Home Premium TV Tuner (works really well!) 128 MB ATI Graphics Card 22" Widescreen monitor 3-Year Warranty and all of the regular stuff (DVD burner, mouse, keyboard, etc, etc) I also included in my accessories a Wireless-N router, and the total price before taxes was $1088. I thought that was very reasonable. So any thoughts on it? It seems to work really well right now, and I love Windows Speech Recognition. -
Linux For Beginners- Easy To Install
FirefoxRocks replied to kanade's topic in Websites and Web Designing
Personally, I think that Ubuntu is quite easy to install by beginners. You can try it out without installing it by using the Live CD, although it is quite slow that way. I've also heard of Mandriva and Knoppix as recommended beginner suggestions, but I haven't tried them out. Ubuntu includes a variety of software that allows you to work productively and also for entertainment purposes. Most hardware is compatible but you may need to do a bit more in-depth hunting for some specialized components. Other than that, give Ubuntu a try today! -
There is no way to alter the links in Windows Live Messenger to open in Mozilla Firefox. You can still access Windows Live Mail by typing in https://login.live.com/jsDisabled.srf?mkt=EN-US&lc=1033. If you are that lazy, add a bookmark to it on the Bookmarks Toolbar folder.

Personally, I still prefer using (X)HTML, CSS and a bit of JavaScript to code my pages better than using WYSIWYG editors to generate my pages. This is because WYSIWYG editors usually generate non-semantic, possibly invalid HTML code. Also, I find that I have much more control in both appearance and functionality by using HTML than by using a WYSIWYG editor.

I have used LogMeIn before and I found it to be quite slow and the software that you need running on the remote computer to be a bit memory intensive during startup. I know someone who uses LogMeIn on their Mac because they have family who troubleshoot for them and they say it is great.I am not concerned about unauthorized access to my computer because I do not store very personal files on it and there is always System Restore for most things. As for Linux, can't you use open a Telnet server and telnet to the IP address of the remote system and administrate from there?

How To Copy File & Folders From Linux To Windows?.
FirefoxRocks replied to kanade's topic in Websites and Web Designing
Or you can use NTFS-3G to allow Linux to have almost-native NTFS support. My better solution would be to share the files on a FAT32 partition. -
Ok I am disposing of my old Windows 98 computer and I am wiping out the hard drive for separate disposal. I downloaded Darik's Boot and Nuke and extracted it to a floppy disk. I have formatted my non-Windows partitions and deleted almost everything on the C: drive. I booted up from the floppy and read through various screens explaining options and stuff. I started the wiping procedure and I was supposed to select a method of wiping. There was Quick, the method used by the RCMP, the method used by the Department of Defense (both quick and full) and Gutmann. I chose the full DoD method because I think that it should be sufficient. Is this actually sufficient to erase the hard drive? Or should I do another wipe after this with another method? I'm not particularly clear on security of hard disks, I just know that the more overwrites the harder it is to retrieve data.

Limewire - Pro (free) how to get limewire pro free
FirefoxRocks replied to Mark Gleeson's topic in Software
The program itself is okay, but stealing music, movies and pictures isn't. I mean peer-to-peer filesharing is great for downloading large things like Linux distributions or OpenOffice or stuff that is open-source and/or free, but downloading mp3s and such is illegal and the police do trace your IP addresses and companies will sue for copyright infringement. -

I agree that Yahoo! Mail has caused me come connection trouble recently in the past year or so but Hotmail is working great for me. Windows Live Hotmail is the second-best webmail service next to Google Mail. The full version works on Internet Explorer and Firefox and it works great! The only problem with the cookies that I have is with Safari where I must delete the appropriate Windows Live cookies sometimes. Other than that, Hotmail is great!! -
How Do I Install Solaris?
FirefoxRocks replied to FirefoxRocks's topic in Websites and Web Designing
Yes, I tried using the standard version as well as the text-based console. Both didn't work. By the way, I have 1 MB of shared video memory on the computer I'm using now. -
How Do I Install Solaris?
FirefoxRocks replied to FirefoxRocks's topic in Websites and Web Designing
Yes I have exactly 512 MB of RAM. Where do I find the list of system requirements? I've looked on several documentations and wikis but I couldn't find it. -
Well I saw this subforum on Xisto and thought that I would give Solaris a try after all I have Linux installed. I went onto the Sun Microsystems site and downloaded OpenSolaris but I cannot get it to install.I burned the ISO image onto a CD-R and proceeded to boot into it. At the GRUB bootloader, I chose the first option (the non-text one) and it started booting. After about half an hour, the GUI came up and it looks A LOT like Ubuntu Linux. The computer was very unresponsive at this time and it took 5 minutes to click on the System menu. Then I tried to find the install button but it froze before I could open up the administration menu. A GNOME error popped up and the system froze. My question is, does OpenSolaris demand high memory requirements or other system requirements that my computer does not meet? I have Ubuntu and Windows XP installed and I am prepared to make a new partition if necessary.I also tried booting into the text version but that did not work either. Should I use the Live CD at all or is there another way to install it?

Ok I tried accessing cPanel using SSL and various security warnings came up. The one in Firefox 3 looks like this: Similar errors appear in Internet Explorer and Opera. Then it says that "Legitimate banks, trusted sites, etc do not ask you to do this". So is it same to use SSL to access my cPanel, or is someone trying to intercept my data with this security certificate?

Do you seriously think that I haven't tried a variety of search terms in Google already? Please provide some actual content, not a link to a page a search results.

Ah, if only everyone would adhere to W3C standards (even transitional) and follow basic web accessibility guidelines. -
Looking For A Reliable Hosting
FirefoxRocks replied to agnes thor's topic in Websites and Web Designing
I think that Xisto is very reliable hosting, and if you need even more services, a very good paid host would be Xisto - Web Hosting, also run by Xisto (which runs Xisto and Xisto). Xisto includes all the features that you would probably need: PHP, MySQL, Perl, lots of bandwidth, etc. If you do need Microsoft technologies such as ASP then I would suggest looking for a Windows based host. And if you think that posting here at Xisto is a huge issue, you are most certainly welcome to use Qupis, a completely free hosting service that puts a one line text ad at the bottom of your pages, also provided by Xisto. -
I have downloaded the big installer package but I couldn't get it to install. For some reason, it failed when trying to create a system restore point. I will try again later but I do suggest closing all programs when trying to install it as it uses quite a bit of processing power. The whitepaper that Microsoft provides does give the changes that this service pack includes, but that doesn't seem like a lot if you continually update your computer through Microsoft Update.

I am interested in learning Java for programming since I would like to program GUIs for my applications. I have learned very basic C and Qbasic programming if that helps. I am looking for beginner tutorials that I can do in Notepad, not any integrated development environments like NetBeans or anything like that.I understand that it is necessary to install the Java Developer Kit and I have done that. What is my next step now? Is this programming language easy to learn?

The thing is, both Intel® Core™2 Duo Processor E8200 (6MB L2 Cache,2.66GHz,1333FSB) and the Quad-Core one was the same price. They aren't offering it both in the same week, but they are the same price.

I think that is a Flash player, not Flash authoring software. I'm also looking for Flash authoring software, but I do not want to buy Flash CS3 or anything like that, I would prefer something that is free and runs on either Windows or Linux.

Ok, I checked into my cPanel this morning and I noticed the new theme. Initially I thought it was just a theme, but then I noticed things were grouped differently and it offered video tutorials. Did Xisto go through a cPanel upgrade?

If you are using Ubuntu, why don't you use the built in text editor gedit? It supports syntax highlighting and integrates well with Nautilus. If you are looking for something lightweight, open up a terminal and type in "pico". Although I don't think that is what you would call "decent".For Windows, I recommend Notepad++ as most did above. It is an excellent tool for writing any kind of scripts/programs.

I usually run Windows Live Messenger, Windows Media Player, Mozilla Firefox, Notepad++, Opera, Safari, Internet Explorer, OpenOffice.org (sometimes Microsoft Office) and my regular security applications (AVG antivirus and ZoneAlarm firewall). As for gaming, I play the default Windows games, which I am planning to try on the new Vista system. Also, I am getting a TV tuner with the new computer, so there might be TV recording. And I'm undecided about purchasing Guitar Hero to go with the new computer, which I might do. I have upgraded my video card for these things. And most of all, I may want to install Ubuntu or another distribution of Linux onto it and use Linux applications. That's my regular computing stuff. I'm looking at the online web advertisements by Dell and Intel. The print ones seem to say the same thing.

Well the Core 2 Quad option was available last week, and now the Core 2 Duo option is available this week for the Inspiron systems. How do I know if my applications are single-threaded or not?
