  1. OK mate, give me a shout on blackravener@gmail.com. I might be able to help you out with design part of the website . By the way, the website is handcoded or you are on some CMS? If so - let me know about its template engine. Cheers.
  2. There are loads of open source cms now and its sometimes hard to find just the right one. If you know at least the main requirements for cms you require you might like to visit http://cmsmatrix.org/ This website gives you possibility to find the cms that meets your criteria. It searches mainly in a list of free cms though some commercial products are included. Best thing is - it gives you link to cms home website
  3. Use other archyvers. there more than just winrar and winzip. I use PowerArch and it works fine with zip and rar files not mentioning a hole lot of other archive formats.
  4. The name of it implies that it is Search Engine Optimized (Friendly) CMS. The webbsite says - dude, we made what we could to make it SEO, but we completely forgot about templating and visual design capabilities of our CMS. Basicaly - some features of CMS were sacrified against SEO
  5. Mate, If you ain?t teen any more, stop acting like you are one. Get a grip of yourself and start dealing with your issues. Move out, so your parents and grandparent will not bug you anymore.I mean, less talk more work, do something, and not just think of doing! Things don?t happen on their own, you and only you can make them happen.P.S. Sometimes kick in an **bottom** helps; hope that?s the case
  6. You should check on Nod32. You can get it from https://www.eset.com/us/ or http://forums.xisto.com/no_longer_exists/ It is paid antiviral software, but? it is resource friendly, unlike Norton or McAfee it will not slow your machine down, it integrates with Microsoft office and outlook, it updates its antivirus database almost every day.I?m quite happy with it.
  7. I'm about to test Joomla nad I'll see if there is something new in templating. And yes, in Mambo you can get design close to your vision, but that's mainly reached through some level of "cheat" and work around the system. Anyways - I'll se what's new in joomla...
  8. You see, CMS is such sort of thing that has its own logic and way of working. Some CMS might not even have a possibility to template. In most cases even those who have some sort of templating feature have a really limited one. I mean, you are forced to create design according to template systems abilities instead of creating template out of design. For instance Mambo (now Jooma) does not support separate templates for separate modules. You can make separate CSS class and use it with one module only, but toy cant affect the way data is rendered: i.e. if module puts date of post on the bottom right corner of post there is little you can do about it and that little in fact is digging into module code and rewriting it to suite your design needs. Apparently its always a choice between advanced design and management features
  9. As this thread turned into sharing who is using what I have to say I?m currently with mambo. Of course, you cant get things done the way you like with WCMS as you can with hand code, but open source WCMS is quick solution :)Getting back to topic. CMS (once again) stands for Content <Management System. If you search for CMS on the web you?d get loads of different definitions and they vary depending on the market author is from. Let?s say Germany?s CMS market is quite different from other central Europe markets and US. According to some descriptions ? operating systems can be considered to be CMS as they allow you to create, change, store and organize electronic content. In the beginning of my post I?ve used abbreviation WCMS which stands for Web Content Management Systems. That is basically systems for web sites management such as above mentioned Mambo, etomite, phpnuke, drupal, aspnuke and many many more.Sub category of WCMS would be WIKI systems such as wikipedia. WIKI stands for What I Know Is. WIKI falls under group ware category as well, so it isn?t so easy to put in one box and forget it.There are some other, more or less known CMS types (I find it easier to refer to particular system by its specific type rather than by CMS as general):DCMS ? Document Management System;CCMS ? Corporate Content Management System;BlogsDirect/WYSIWYG (What You See Is What You Get) /in content management software. For example Macromedia Contribute.
  10. I have to disagree with you. Our computers are in fact artificial, but not intelligence by far. Intelligence is far much more that linear data processing at high speed. When I comes to artificial intelligence you have to dig into many disciplines and theories such as psychology, neurology, philosophy, perfectionism, computing, electronics, robotics and so on.
  11. Yeap, on some level you are right. in expert / solution support AI is more or less just a realy big bunch of IF, AND, OR commands, but in neural networks, these comands are used to "train" network only and it doe not use them afterwards, but applies the paterns/schemes/logics it "has learned". The problem with neural networks is that they can be "trained" to do one (or several, but not a bunch) task only, duo to physical limitations of network size. This problem egzist now, but in a future it can be solved...
  12. Sorry mate, I woun't be able to give you reference to specific source now, but I definately read that when I made my research partly on my disertation, partly on my work as Web Project Manager. Of course, it was couple of years ago and once again, as far as I know - noeone for sure knows how google works and rates websites as it is the commertial secret. Oh, and by the way, the text (not background) colour has to be/is recomended to be black to get higher rating, not to be included in index.
  13. Ok, first of all artificial intelligence is a part of cognitive science and is still under development. Its aim is to create something what is not human nor live (that way it is artificial), but could demonstrate logical ?thinking?. Today, unfortunately, there is no real artificial intelligence. Of course, there are systems, that are able to demonstrate some level of ?rational thinking? and is said to be as ?smart? as approximately 5-6 years old kid.In practice artificial intelligence theory is mainly used when creating complex solution support systems, image or object recognition systems and so on.One thing that has to be pointed out, that cognitive science denies possibility to create artificial intelligence on linear process machines (that is regular PC ) as its operation methods are to different from the ones in human brain. Instead of linear processing units one has to use neural networks that is a way different computing way and functions more like human brain, as one computing element of neural network is something like synthetic representation of brain cell. I suppose there should be another thread on neural networks as different type of computing :PFor example neural network can find out the formula if you supply it with series or argument ad result. It is similar to standard IQ test task where one has to find the next number in a row according to some pattern ? that ways it can be considered as some sort of intelligence. If someone is really interested in that, give me a shout (ravenblack@bluebottle.com) and I?ll try to dig out my university ones and make a translation on it.It is interesting discipline ?
  14. Well, the first post was quite explaining. Indeed, el Chupacabra means goat sucker or goat killer in Spanish. And it is part of Latino mythology (quite modern one though). I can even remember there was a episode of X Files on El Chupacabra, but in that case it was some strange virus, that made corpses drained and two brothers who where immune to the virus and spread it across Latin American villages. Most likely El Chupacabra is yet unclassified carnivore mammal and that?s it. It might be a rear one, thus not easy, to observe and catch for scientific study. It is the oldest human mind trick of all ? humans tend to refer to unknown or thing they don?t understand or have no explanation to as to divine ones, demons, aliens and so on. In that case you don?t have to look for explanation ? ?it is will of god? and that says all
  15. Well, correct my if I'm wrong, but as far as I know, all SEO (Search Engine Optimisation) stuff is based on guesses and coincidences. I mean, no one (except google it self) for sure and 100% certainly knows how google ranks pages as it is kind of commercial secret (like recipe for CocaCola). To mention one of the most popular believes that your site does not comply with, that google gives higher ranking to pages that <title> element text marches with the first line of web page that has to be <H1> element and its colour has to be black. In your case it means total inverse of your colour sheme.
  16. Ok, as you have started discussion on raster image formats and which to use when, I?ll give the very basic idea of most popular formats and where to use them.Let?s start from the very most popular ones :)GIF ? expanded as Graphic Interchange Format. Initially created to be universal graphic file format to transfer graphical information between different systems. Supports transparency; frame-by-frame animation; can be interlaced, supports up to 256 colours palette though. Very popular in web as is small in size due to little number of colours and is supported by almost every graphic browser known. It is raster image format. It means it safes image as sequence of dots along with parameters for every dot.Best to be used for non-photo quality images and short animations, images that need to preserve sharp edges, as GIF is loose less format with no compression.JPG/JPEG ? expanded as Joint Photographic Experts Group. Initially invented to store photographic quality images as supports up to 16926659444736 colours. It became popular in web because of it compression possibility thus reducing size. As well as gif ? is supported by almost every browser. Unfortunately it looses quality when compressed. Does not support transparency or animation.Best to be used for high quality, full colour images.BMP stands for Windows BitMap. Very heavy when comes to terms of size. For a long time been used as MS Windows (pre Y2K) graphic format (i.e. as desktop wallpapers) as was the only one supported by windows. For a long time was supported by Internet Explorer only, thus not so popular in websites. It is raster format with no compression and can save photo quality images.PNG ? stands for Portable Network Graphics. Initially invented to replace GIF. It?s advantage to GIF is that PNG can store photographic quality images (i.e. 16926659444736 colours), as well as GIF it supports transparency and can be interlaced, but PNG can not store animation. PNG uses loose less compression thus can be used alongside with JPG. PNG is supported by most graphic web browsers.TIF/TIFF ? stands for Tagged Image File Format. Initially created to store uncompressed images, which is similar to BMP. Difference is that TIF was supported by Windows as well as by Mac so it became more popular for image storage. Now it uses loose less compressions. Most popular ones are LZW and ZIP algorithms for TIF compression. Because of its big size, it is not used in websites and little (if any) browser can support this format. Due to its ability to store high quality images and support by most Graphic Software Packages as well as Operating Systems it became de facto standard in publishing. That?s it for know folks
  17. well... most of the tips points to the main and biggest upload time issue - graphics. That?s true - the less images there are on the website, the faster it loads. it applies to Flash, sounds, embedded videos and so on.The reason for that is hidden in the basics of the way websites work. I hope that will let you to get a general video, what makes websites load slowly. So, when one enters address for a website, browser sends query to a server and server returns requested web page. Prior to viewing the page at users screen it has to be downloaded into its hard drive, so all images, flash animations and so on are downloaded and only then displayed. I bet you've downloaded mp3 before and how ho long it takes to get one file. that is it.Other point seems to be missing in this thread. it is code optimisation.First of all, if you use any scripting language - you have to try to make your code to do only necessary things. If you use PHP you could optimise your code with Zend or free tool TurckMMCache. These tools will precompile your php code, so when user will request php page you will save time on compiliong it in server prior to display.Secondly - you should try to use as little queries to databases as possible. Reason for that is web server and database server are separate, though they might run on the same machine. For that reason every query you make counts as connection to another server and increases unwanted load time.Hope it helped you.
  18. and one thing I forgot before - fun status message have you ever received any complaints regarding it?
  19. mmm. quite a load of information. That's good. First of all, what cms do you use? Probably it limits your possibilities. Now, no offence, there is something you could do to make your website more readable:Try making design that is abit more than just squares with content. I mean, join block wich kontains word 'menu' with actual menu, makit one. Mke menu items look diferent from the plain tekst so it will be more wisible and user friendly it will stand out. Good thing is tat your menu is on the top rigth corner as people instinktively are looking for navigation on the top of web site or top left side.Make titles to be a bit darker than white, as the dar ones are barely visible on current background, one kas to stare to read a title. It's my personal opinion, but i hate underlined or striked through links. I'd got rig of that. Just set decoration to none in your css.well... thats about it.
  20. and to add to my last post, there are some more weird phobias: Arachibutyrophobia - fear of peanut butter sticking to the roof of your mouth. (as arachi should mean peanuts, butyr probably means butter and and phobia automatonophobia - fear of ventriloquist's dummies and wax statues (as auto means self as in autoportret nad the rest is up to you guys) caligynephobia - fear of beautiful women. Should be a tradegy for any man peladophobia - fear of bold people (intresting, when one with this phobia gets bold, is he afraid of himself?) hippopotomonstosesquippedaliophobia - fear of long words. Thanks goodnes one can find out about his condition without freaking out
  21. Yep, indeed most of medical conditions are named using latin or greek words. i believe when it comes to numbers - greek names are used, as far as I remember my chemistry classes :)and to contribut to phobias list, there are some some:Agoropbobia - fear of open spacesArachnophobia - fear of spiders (as Arachnids are all spiders and similar creatures)
