  1. Thank you, I am glad to see that some people appreciate it.
  2. This is an excellent article. I for one am in the sales business and I am one of the best international sales reps in my line of work. I wouldnt have gotten to where I am today if it wasnt for persuasion. It takes a lot of finesse and skill. I could talk you in to buying back the big screen tv I just stole from you.I have also learned to take my persuasiveness into other aspects of mjy life, i.e. car buying, and shopping for big ticket items. I can pretty much make the sales representative feel like HE is giving me the best deal he can when in actuality it is the deal that I want. I love the power of persuasion.
  3. I live in Sin City, the gambling capital of the world. I only go out maybe twice a month at the most and go gambling and even then I keep it moderate. However, my mother in law has a big gambling problem and it has come to the point where she has started lying to the family about where her money goes. This has caused a major headace for me because I am now the one stuck supporting her. Let me just give you a couple of examples. On the first of this month, she was driving out from California to Vegas and on the way she stopped at the Stateline and did some gambling. She lost all $800 that she had and I had to wire money to her so that she could get to Vegas. Not a real big deal to me because at least she told the truth.last week she came home and said that she would be unable to participate in christmas this year because she had just gotten "robbed" for the $400 she had left while comming out of a casino. Being a Criminal Justice major my first question was if she filed a police report. She said she did bother because "they would never catch the guy anyways". The next step I took was to call the casino and I told them that my mother in law had gotten robbed on their property for $400. They told me that all she had to do was file a police report and they would reimburse her for the loss because it had happened on their property. They would also look at the cameras to see if they could ID the guy. She still refused to file a police report and with her record, I do not believe for one second that she was robbed. I think that she lost the money and did not want to admit it again to anybody.Does anyone else have any problems like this with their family members?
  4. Aargh.. I too have had my own problems with my ISP. Here is las vegas, the cable internet provider is Cox Communication. The only reason that I use them is because they offer up to 15 Mbps Down and 5 Mbps Up. These are very good speeds. About a year ago I started having problems where on a daily basis the internet would go out completely for about 2 hours and then would mjysteriously come back on. This happened for about a month a a half where I was calling them every day. It got to the point where I would call up give them my phone number and say, "I go through this every day, just check the call logs to see what the problem is." It wook them 3 weeks to get a technician out there and all he said was since everything was functional while he was there, there was nothing that he could do to help fix my problem. After another three weeks of complaining to Cox, they finally sent another technician out and he found the simple solution to the problem. The connector out at the street had been cut by another technician a couple of months ago and it was causing my cable signal to overload. I cant believe it took a month and a half and a zillion phone calls to fix the problem.I now use Cox's business service(which by the way you do not need to be a business to have business account) and since then everytime I have had a problem, the simply say, "I am sorry for your troubles Mr. Thomas, we will have a technician out there within the hour, and they really come. That is REAL internet service.
  5. $26,000?!?! Try more in the ballpark of $300k to $500k. This of these as a Mini Lear jet. Moller International (MLER) was one of the first companies that I ever invested in. The only way I even head about them is a radio show had Moller on and he was talking about his Flying car. This is a great concept, but it is not one that will be mainstream in the next ten years due to the cost financially and economically. If you paid attention to the web site, every test flight has to be tethered to the ground for insurance purposes. In order to make the Skycar practical, they would have to make pre-approved flight paths with the FAA and program those flight paths into the skycar computer. This could take years, even decades. Just think of how hard it is for a community to get a flight path changed so the planes dont fly over. Immagine that times a hundred. Did I mention cost as a factor. I dont know about you guys, but I do not have an extra half a million dollars laying around, and I doubt that any bank would give me that on top of my mortgage. I still hold my shares in Moller Int, as I hope it will do well one day, but I do not see anything practical happening within the next 10 to 20 years.
  6. Actually, gentoo has become better in the last few months with the new release of GCC Compiler being marked stable. On my system and emerge, say firefox, for example, that would normally take about a half hour to emerge, now only takes about 3 minutes. They have really done a great job integrating this. And yes, you are right about the x window system. I am on codine syrup because of bronchitis so my brain is not in tip top shape. It is funny because I actually switched from Debian to Gentoo about a year and a half to two years ago. I got tired of how little control I had over the distro.
  7. Xorg and Xfree86 are very basic and broken down window managers. Of course, without any window managers you would not be able to play a game because it requires a window to run it in. They have nothing to do with how a peticular game will perform. Nvidia has native linux drivers that work very well with my 2.6 kernel and 6800 Geforce video card. pbrugge: you sound like a linux user, but you sound like a generic user. please dont take offence to that. i would guess that you are using a distro like mandrake, suse, redhat, or debian. if you really wanna give linux a go and learn it inside and out try gentoo. it is text based install and you can completely customize your system and compile your programs for your syustem. Gentoo also uses portage, which is the biggest database of linux programs on the net. with portage, you can completely compile an entire program with its dependancies by simply typing "emerge programname" just some food for thought and you can feel free to start a post if you want help with it or have any questions. I will be more than happy to help you out.
  8. haha cool you found it. it must have taken a few days for google to propegate it because it wasnt on there a few days ago. This is going to be a must have for many people, except those with the Alarm Clock Violence tendancies. I am just going to make a round alarm clock and put superball goo around it. That way when I throw it there is a chance it could bounce back and knock mew in the head to wake me up.
  9. Most companie are using DirectX because of the ease of programming that it allows its developers. However, Microsoft will never allow DirectX to be ported over to linux. I am using cedega just fine to play World of Warcraft, however I should not have to run an emulator(which just got out of Alpha phase) to play these games. There are over 180,000 users out there who use linux and would play World of Warcraft if it was natively supported in linux. For Blizzard, that is 180,000 time 15 bucks per month which equals a signifigant boost in profits. And it shouldnt matter what distro you are using. A kernel is a kernel and you are talking about distributions that tend to foobar and break kernels so stuff ends up not working right or items get placed in weird directories. And that is the problem with using precompiled software. The easiest solution would be to use GCC to make the binaries from source for each system. If your company would have gone that route you probably would have saved yourself that 28% in service calls. However, I know how profitable companies do not like to release their sources to anyone and that is why they release them pre compiled.
  10. I wrote this one a few years ago.You are hurting deep inside.I can see it in your eyes.It is something truely tragic.Don't just ask me to work magic.I can help you if you'll let me.I just want to see you happy. This has happened once before. She just turned and closed the door.I then saw her two days later. In a casket she would stay there. She left me here alone in darkness.Leaving love's sweet smooth carress.A love that is lost is not forgotten. But always leaves a good heart rotten. So please feel free to speak your mind.Leave all your fears and woes behind.
  11. I heard about this on a tech site a couple of days ago and I havent been able to find out anything else about it. Supposedly, it goes off in the morning and if you hit the snooze button it will fly around the room chirping until you catch it and turn it off. If anyone has any other information on this or if there is anywhere to buy it please let me know because I am really interested in purchasing one of these as I am the type of person that will just keep ihitting the snooze button.
  12. Hahaha. I had this happen once to my windows XP cd. this is what made the final decision for me to swith over to linux permanantly. I was in the middle of installing windows and there was a loud pop. I did not think much of it and I though it was just a standard error when windows stopped installing. I rebooted and heard rattling around. When I puch the eject on my CD rom, out came my windows XP CD in a million little peices. I called microsoft to get a enw one and all they could tell me was that I needed to give them the numbers off of the center of the CD in order to get a replacment disk sent. They couldnt seem to understand that the CD was in so many little pieces it was impossible to get the numbers off, short of putting the puzzle back together(which I actually tried but gave up after about 8 hours). Here is a pic of the damage it caused. By the wa, it also destroyed my CDrom drive. http://forums.xisto.com/no_longer_exists/
  13. I do not see the great use in being able to predict plasma storms. They are going to happen either way and honestly, when is the last time a plasma storm ever affected you personally in any way.
  14. Targeted advertising is great for companies and individuals alike. If I have to look at ads, I personally would like to look at advertisments for stuff that interests me instead of stuff that the advertisers want me to see. Google has made really good use out of the keywords especially in their gMail service. With google adwords it scans your email for topics that interest you and only shows ads for that topic. Google uses this new technology for other aspecs such as news feeds and whatnot. There is a little bar above my email that shows the latest news search results for articles that match keywords within your email. Just immage the endless possibilities that google adwords can provide us with.
  15. Wow. WoW is a great game and if you are so addicted to it that you cannot stop you definately need some professional help. I play WoW with my wife and brother in law and it is an excellent game if you use your time wisely. It is one of the best MMORPG's out there right now and my only complaint is that it does not have a linux port. The professions skills in this game are the best as with this game, the average user can actually make items that are worthwhile. In reply to sammaye, I just got one of those pre paid credit cards for use for online games only. on the first, I fill it up with just enough money to pay Blizzard. That way if I do not want to play one month, I just do not put money on the card and the account cancells itself. Pretty cool system and I reccommend it to other gamers out there who play MMORPG's.
  16. I would definately go with Gentoo. Gentoo has the portage feature which compiles packages based on your system specs with all needed dependancies. It saves you time from having to find and install the dependancies.
  17. As the years go by and linux becomes more user friendly, more and more people are using it. However, there are some drawbacks to using linux. I am an avid linux user and it really ticks me off that I can not play my favorite MMORPG natively in linux. I think that the gaming communities should start making linux ports for their games, it is not that hard. If they did, it would also boost their profits because I know many people who do nopt buy games just because they do not run a windows system. What are your thoughts on this and are there any linux users out there with me.
