Wow, interesting. I don't really honestly have the time nor energy to read a 40 page report, but I may download it later and glance through. It's entertaining, at the very least. I've liked Linux so far, and this report might provide even more reasons to stick with it!

I really hope Google doesn't have to turn over those records. I mean, the government doesn't exactly have a decent track record when it comes to dealing with terrorist "stuff." Is it a crime to display a bit of interest in a subject that obviously is extremely important? Jlhaslip, unless I'm confused this is a Linux command relating mostly to granting permissions to other users of the computer. You can set restrictive access to groups and individual users, allowing them to edit, view, execute files.I'm not exactly sure it's related to Xisto and allowing certain users to view a page. I think the easiest way to do that is to put the users in a table, add a value concerning the "type" of user they are. Make a login page ... if they match up as whatever type of user, the page displays. If not, it doesn't. You could also probably just set up one little login page (enter pass to continue) and give the password to whoever needs it. Regardless, that question is (I think) better suited for a different section of the forum.

As for western nations not having honor .. what do you call the men and women making millions of dollars per year who leave their lucrative jobs and serve in the military to engage in what they believe is defending their country and her citizens? Thats a little over 50% of the population enrolled in school, and we can make the inference that the majority of those enrolled in school are males, who having read your post I would assume are pretty much soley responsible for these honor killings. Although this may be inhumane and cruel to us, is our personal viewpoint always right? Of course not. I have to say excellent game. It's the most in depth strategy game I've probably ever played. So, whats it about? Well, you take control of a country (in a made up world) and act as its President. It's set in what I'd call current times - no knights, magic, etc. The thing I like best is its amazing details. It's extremely in-depth, possibly to the point of being user unfriendly. But I still love it. So what exactly can you do? Millitary - you control what types of weapons are purchased and have to make sure that you have proper ammunition. You can set up detailed defense strategies for towns, roads, and regions as well. Army Size is not directly controllable - it's dependant on your population and amount of the budget you assign. Education - you control the educational priorities, numbers of elementary schools, high schools, and universities. The thing is, these places require teachers/professors and other staff members. These professions take time to train, and again, you cannot directly control the amount. You set educational priorities, which results in higher numbers of 10+ "types" of workers. It's key to closely watch the educational priorities, once a field is low on workers it takes quite some time to properly fix up the amount of people being trained in that area. Health Care - you have to build hospitals, which require doctors, nurses, and other staff members. As I was saying before, you must have enough of these folks being trained. Ever-important educations system! You also can set the percentage of social security the country pays. Transportation - you are responsible for roads and railroads. Don't build them and your country suffers. Of course, these roads require both monetary resources and people resources. ALSO, roads get worn down! Of course you're going to have to leave enough room in the budget to keep them well maintained. Corporations - these are perhaps the key to a successful country. You can choose to micromanage various corporations, which produce goods and services vital to your country. Corporations can be turned into Nationally Owned Corps, which then result in your country making money. Corps are greatly indepth - they require resources which can be purchased from other countries OR if you're smart, you can set up contracts with your own corporations to produce the necessary supplies. In addition to all this there are federations, trade organizations, a stock market and soooo much more. The depth of this game is quite stunning. It's got an immense learning curve. I also had a question, I checked the info page and it said the majority of the patches were already implemented into WINE CVS .. does this mean its probably best to just go with CVS? Or are these patches possibly worth using? Any comments welcome. Perhaps this is old news or non-news, dunno.

I need to know how to "split" a number up into seperae numbers, using VB. For example, "54321". I need to split that into 5 seperate numbers - "5," "4," "3," "2," "1," and assign them to a variable, if possible. This next part isn't important, but if you're curious why I need to know ...Eventually what I need to do is split the number into these individual parts and add them together. With that new number I need to again split it and take the last number subtracted from 10. That new number will then be placed at the end of the beginning number.Example:5+4+3+2+1 = 1515 = 1 & 5, take the last number ..10-5 = 5New number = "543215"The thing is I have no clue how to split this number into the seperate parts. Once I get past that I'm 99% sure I can wrap up. Anyone able to help? If so, Thanks!

I sort of like the look, but looking at the Window's site it seems they emphasize it A LOT. I'd much rather see more in-depth technical info rather than a bunch of stuff about how pretty it looks and how amazing translucent windows are. Another thing I noticed is that at least two or three times they said something about how "Windows will have taken care of it, without you even knowing!" That scares me. I'd like to know if my computer has some fatal failure, even if it's been taken care of.I guess we can only wait and see. I work at a PC shop where we build a lot of custom systems. I'm sure when Vista comes out I'll be plunged right into a lot of the information. Until then I'm only an outsider looking in, so can't really accurately judge.

Okay, I just jumped onto the CSS bandwagon. Almost immediately I saw the powerful potential that CSS has to design a site much more cleanly. I was an old fashioned tables sort of guy, and I have to say that the layering feature using the div tags is brilliant. It allows for so much more, and so much easier. I designed a little "test" page, so to speak, so that I could fool around with layerings and various tags. The thing is, the page displays "bad". There is a horizontal scroll bar and for the life of me I can't figure out why. I'd host the site if I could, but my account is curiously suspended (another issue in itself). Just out of curiousity .. What sets it apart from other games? Why should I play this one and not any of the other 100 planetary combat clones? So many games out there, and I'm still looking for one that truly hooks me in with unique content and ideas.

I just hope Google doesnt over-extend themselves. Slipping into the ISP business seems like it could have some bad reprecussions. I love Google, and all I can say is that it better not become something akin to AOL or MS. :S

I'd like to see Linux become slightly more mainstream, although, I'm not sure if it can ever become truly mainstream. "Linux" to me at least, is not just one distro, it's the whole lot of them. I like knowing that if I decide that I need something specific I can get out on the web and search through hundreds of flavors until I find the one thats just right. I can then tweak that flavor until it's 100% what I need. I think if a distribution went mainstream it'd lose some of that feel. On the flipside, I'd love to see some major competition to Microsoft. When corporations compete, customers win. I think thats the saying anyways.

I'll explain how we do it at the PC Repair shop I work at. I'm not very technical smart, mostly a mindless worker, but I'll give you my advice anyways. If it has a conductive pad on it's probably easiest to use it. If not, squirt a small amount of the conductor onto the processor, probably a little bigger than a match head. Place the heatsink on top, and fit the mounts into the mainboard holes but do not screw in/press down. Wiggle the sink around a bit to spread the gel out. Remove, take a look, and then put the heatsink in place.It may not necessarily be covering the whole processor. Any other questions, post back.

Cyborg~ it really depends on what you intend to do. Different languages are better suited for various tasks. For example, PHP is much more (obviously) web oriented than, say, C++. I think the very basic thing to do is pick a language and throw yourself into it. Get the syntax down, understand how, why, etc on every level. The most important thing is to give yourself a strong base. With this you'll pick it up quick, and when you want to branch into other languages it will be pretty simple. All you'll have to do is familiarize yourself a bit and get the ties between a language you know and the knew language established. Pretty much every programming language is extremely similar in terms of "vocabulary" and various methods for getting places.Like I said, just throw yourself into it. It's extremely boring at first (at least it was for me) but the end results are great.

I think the iPod has pros and cons. Definitely the name has earned it some undeserved praise but lets be honest .. it's probably got the biggest "community" of all MP3 players. For hardcore music enthusiasts 20 gigs isnt hard to fill. When I had to reformat my comp and had it back up I downloaded a gig of music in the first day, replacing stuff I lost. I'm up to 8 gigs now and about to start uploading songs from CDs. Music is big. Although, I'm thinking of looking into other options. I've seen the iRiver get some praise, so I may take a look at that. Guess we'll see.

EBay is what you make it. If you're willing to take the risk of buying an item you cannot see in person from someone you don't know go right ahead. EBay has some nice features built in to make it much more safe. Also, there are many more honest people in the world over dishonest. I've purchased 2-3 items off EBay, all in the "middle" price range, and haven't been gipped or disappointed yet.Regarding the XBox 360 .. heh, well whats the problem with making money? The world is, generally, capitalistic. If I'd been quick enough I can assure you that I'd have had 3 or 4 units for sale and an extra $2000 easy cash in my pocket. Me and my brother already have funds lined up for when PS3 comes out. I say if someones willing to pay my price, I'm willing to sell.Overall EBay is an excellent idea that is carried out quite well. Sure, people probably get ripped off daily .. but in all honesty, the vast majority of "customers" are happy ones who got a good deal.

I believe it's only on XP Pro, yes. Thats one of the things I hate about Home - they cut out a lot of useful little features. But then again, how many run of the mill users need to change their account type? Most probably have the one account created at setup. ;)Playing around in that same area you can also set a lot of local security policies. Not sure of the tabs and such since I'm on a Linux Box, but I know somewhere in that you can change logon policies and such. Fun to look and mess around with if you have some free time and enjoy customizing.

I don't know if this is possible, if it is and I missed it, excuse me. Well, I'd like to add a 2nd admin account to access the cpanel. Me and a friend manage the site together, and I suppose it's possible to just use the same account but it'd be much easier to do two. Also, if this is possible could both Admins be logged in at once? Is it possible to just buy some re-writable CDs and save the new version of your game every time? Or possibly a ZIP Drive? <shrug> I don't think there are any sites like you asked for, if there are I sure haven't heard of them when I was into MMORPG making a couple years ago.
