  1. It seems that the problem is what is the concept of human life. Something is human the moment it has the "essence" of humanity. From the moment of conception, this first cell has all the information that makes up for all a human being is. There isn't a stage later on in the whole process of embryo development that changes in essence so drastically to tell exactly -before this it isn't human; after this, it is. So tampering with cells, embryos, fetus, babies, adults or elderly people is exactly the same. From all the advances and technology, I don't see any evolution or development in humankind: we may have the power to do anything, now is it correct to do it? For example, anyone has the means or the power to terminate another person's life. Does it mean that if we can do it, we have to?
So if we can play with cells and genes, does it mean that we have to do it? Does it mean that it's the only way we can deal with diseases?

I see what you are saying, but I guess I just don't really think of the essence of humanity being particularly precious over any other organism. I don't see humans as being any more important or higher in status than any other organism. We may be smarter, but the world wouldn't be the same without everything else. We share the same genetic code with most other animals on the planet (just different programming). Only about 2 percent of that programming separates us from other species.

If anything, I think that our technology and advances in science would stop us from evolving. Technology takes the place of evolution. Evolution works through the death and survival of organisms (survival of the fittest) from their environment, predators, etc. Bad genes are lost when individual animals with those genes cannot survive and just the opposite for those with good genes. We are removed from nature so natural selection really doesn't apply to us much anymore, except for maybe diseases (but even with many diseases we have medicine and such to help). There isn't much pushing the human race to evolve, since we live in a time when most of the human race live long lives and their survival isn't quite as difficult as it would be in nature.

  2. I am creating an elcetronic photography portfolio, which will be available on the Internet for people to view. Currently I have created a Flash scroll where you can scroll through the main image categories and then once you click on a category it takes you to a selection of photographs related to the category. My query is what else do you think I should include in it? I have a write up about my inspiration, biography, techniques and how to purchase my prints, but what else do you think should be included in it?
I am trying to make it unique and different as most web portfolios I have come across are very similar. Any ideas?
    Thanks in advance

It sounds like you have all of the needed info. I think it is okay to keep it simple and let the work speak for itself on a portfolio. It's fine to put in new and different things, but ultimately I thinkt hat the work itself could serve that purpose :P

Hope it goes well. Maybe people could provide more ideas if they saw some of your work or your site so far.

  3. Okay, so I've been working on a program to stream music from iTunes, and I'd really not go into the details of why, cause they're not important. But anyway, I've run into the issue where I need to obtain the music iTunes is outputting to the sound card so it can be streamed. I'm not 100% sure on how this process works, but I've been told that iTunes should be outputting a WAV file to the sound card. I was wondering how I could access this WAV file and copy it, so I can stream it. I don't think this is possible in C#, and it probably needs to be done in C++, but the bulk of the application is written in C#, so if there is a way to do it in C#, that would be nice. Otherwise I just need help figuring out how to do it in C++ or C and then import that function/class/whatever into the C# code.

I am going to start out and say that I am not really a programmer (with the exception of some web stuff, etc).
But if it helps, I know that an open source program called Audacity records from the sound card like you are describing. The website is https://sourceforge.net/projects/audacity/ and I believe you can find a link to the source in the Get Involved section (not sure, I am having internet connectivity problems at the moment).

  4. You sure about that, took a few minutes to google this and you should be able to do it now.

    My res is 1920x1000 :)

Those are the steps I take to change my resolution, but in XP this seems to change it for everyone even under a separate user account.

You use 1600x1400 resolution??????????? That's quite a rare resolution...
Is it a 32", almost square monitor?

Anyway each monitor has it's recommended resolution, and you should use that. If you use a lower one the image may be pixeled and if you use a higher one you may lose some information...

Actually now that I think of it, I probably meant something more like 1600x1200, but I don't remember (I am away from home). I normally operate it at either that or 1920x1440. My monitor is a 19in CRT. It is very clear and operates best at higher resolutions and gets a little weird when going down to low resolutions like 1024x768. Furthermore, I just like having the extra screen real estate when I am working in multiple programs, especially with graphics programs that have all of those settings windows etc.

  5. I am agnostic, so I don't deny that there is a god or not. I just can prove one way ir another so I just wouldn't know what to believe in even if I did commit to saying that there was a god. I was raised protestant Christian, but I can't just believe something because everyone else is and I can't bring myself to have blind faith in something that I don't know is there. I am still interested in religions and I do like to hear about what others believe. I think that many life lessons and morals can be learned from various religions.

  6. I doubt that they would ever be able to grow bast the state of an embryo. I think that they would be grown in a lab rather than in a cow. There wouldn't be any reason to let them grow any older than being a clump of stem cells. All stem cells are, are cells that have not yet been specialized to perform a certain purpose (muscle, skin, nerve, etc). I don't mean to be disrespectful of others beliefs, but I don't understand why a microscopic glob of cells is any more precious than an actual human life. The stem cells could be used to save many lives and cure so many diseases and problems. I think that an actual human's life is more important than a few cells.

  7. Seriously, you all have no idea of what you're saying. Unless the versions you guys tested were from years and years ago.
WindowBlinds' rendering engine is dozens of times faster than Windows XP default one (since it uses hardware acceleration, and many technologies like Hyperpaint), and uses much less system resources like CPU and RAM memory, though might use more of your video card (what's nowadays a big advantage, since even some old Video cards do a wonderful job).

Also, once you use WindowBlinds, you should disable XP's Theming service, to free up system resources, so you don't have both running side by side.

Yeah the last time that I used it was years ago. It has probably been at least 4 years but maybe more, so I don't doubt that it has improved since then.

  8. I know about Virtual PC 2004 and desktop virtualisation :)But the problem I am facing is practical my brother uses Windows and he is not interested in Linux (saying it is not going to overtake Microsoft Operating systems in the Home desktop)he may be true. But I want to learn Linux so I am thinking an option in which I can install it in the same machine via a external Drive or something like that.I don't need a lot of space 20 GB will be more than sufficient.

I'm not very knowledgeable when it comes to linux, but I know this is possible. I think the best way is to just make multiple partitions on the drive. Then you would just have a boot menu to choose which OS to boot into.
You could run it from an external drive too if you wanted but it is possible to have both on the same drive.

  9. there are a number of ways to execute this and some are harder than others. If you don't want to get tied up in a lot of actionscript, you could set it up with a stop action on each frame, and then on another layer have the scrolling of the text motion tweened, then have a button that will take you to the next frame. And I suppose that you would mask the symbol that the text is in so that it would reveal as you scroll. Since this is the easy way, it is also sor tof annoying for the viewer, since they would have to keep clicking, instead of dragging. I would suggest that you go to http://forums.xisto.com/no_longer_exists/ is by the far the best flash resource that I have ever seen. They have stuff for both beginners and gurus. The site has tutorilas, open source fla files, royalty free sounds, and a very helpful forum with tons of experienced Flash designers/programmers, etc. I have seen and used tutorials for scrolling on this site successfully and they provide the file for you to use, making it even easier.

  10. I have two external drives. One is a 160 GB LaCie (firewire/usb) with a very heavy duty metal casing/stand. I first bought it when I was in design school to transport all of my projects back and forth between school and home. Now I store and backup files on it that I don't readily nead on my computer. I also use it for transporting data when I need to. The other external drive was a 120 GB usb western digital drive, but it ended up dying on me so I swapped out the drive with an old 40 GB drive I had laying around. I use that as sort of a temporary drive to store files before I have time to archive and such.

  11. I currently have and use most of those. View Formatted Source is a nice one too. It load the source code in a cleaner, easy to read format where you can expand and minimize parts of the code. I use Colorzilla, Measureit and FireFTP very frequently. I also use EditCSS, which loads the CSS in a sidebar on the left and the page will change as you edit it.The xray extension I find to be sort of annoying. I think that the View source chart is more useful.
