  1. foolakadoogie: Nope, no Jason's Deli locations in California. I ate a California Club sandwich when I got off work tonight though ;) I'm curious as to what all you do in your line of work? I'm trying to learn some web application programming at the moment, such as Servlets, JSP, PHP & MySQL -- you do any of that stuff? Sounds like you're more of a photoshop pro than a coder, but you said web design, which web applications are a large part of I imagine. Did you go to school for what you're doing? I'm planning to go to school for comp.sci./programming, hopefully soon.
Anyway, time for Stewart & Colbert, gotta go!

I do a wide range of design work in digital, print and web including websites, stationary (envelopes, letterhead, business cards), some motion graphics, logos/branding, brochures, posters, advertisements, packaging, signage, etc. I work alot in Illustrator, Photoshop, InDesign, Flash, AfterEffects, Dreamweaver, Corel Painter, etc.

I don't do much actual web programming. I can code websites, but I mainly stick to xhtml, css, javascript and a small amount of php. Normally a programmer will do the web applications. I do quite a bit of work for some design firms and they have their own freelance programmers to do that, who would get the job done much faster than I could (more cost effective). I would like to work on learning some more about web programming. I just need to set aside some time and read through w3schools or something.

I went to art/design school (Otis College of Art & Design) where I received a 4 year BFA degree.

  2. mmMmmMMmm I haven't been to Jason's Deli in years. I don't know if they are even out here in CA. I freelance at home doing graphic design, motion graphics, web design, etc. I enjoy it, but sometimes I wish I could work around other people and it isn't easy handling all the accounting etc that goes along with running your own business. I think I might go for a job at a design firm or something soon. In the past I worked at Mattel, Inc and also another small toy company called Sport Fun doing design work.

  3. I got a big collections of patterns (.pat) to PS CS2.And I have tryied to creat my own patterns to be loaded in Photoshop.
What I want is to use my own made gfx to create .pat files.

Anyone who knows how to do that? ;)

    // Obscurus

This is actually quite easy. Open a new canvas and design whatever pattern that you would like to repeat. You only have to design
one of what is going to repeated, but if you want to repeat it that is ok too. When that is done, use one of the selection tools to select
what will be repeated. For example if it is a square design, you would select with the rectangular selection tool. Once you have
selected what you want the repeating design to be, then go to Edit > Define Pattern. Photoshop will prompt you to give it a name so
name it whatever you want. That's it!

Now to use/test it you can just make a selection and go to Edit > Fill and select pattern. Your design should be at the bottom of the list of patterns.
    I hope that helps you.

  4. I use firefox the most, but I do also use Opera. I just wish that Opera would give in and allow extensions. The current widgets just don't do anything for me.I use firefox extensions every day when working. They make me more productive and just speed up my work flow. I feel deprived in a browser without them. Opera has some great features, but without those extensions it can't be my number one browser. Opera has a nicer interface and I just sort of which that I could use it more often.

  5. It is a fun site. I got through quite a few of the challenges, but I haven't been on the site in about a year. Maybe I should try it out again since I am a little more proficient in unix commands now (still not very). I learned quite a bit from the site. Like others have said hacking isn't band. It is a neutral activity in of itself. Just because there are malicious hackers out there doesn't mean that they are all malicious.

  6. Hey guys is there any flash software that is very light and free?
I have PHP-Nuke installed on my website and the main banner at the top is a flash file instead of a regular image file.
So I need a decent flash creating software.
Or if there is a method of directly transforming pictures into flash files. ( It is a still, non-moving picture ).
    Thanks for the feedback... BitShift

I don't know of any light-weight ones. If all you need to do is convert a normal image to an swf of the same dimensions
you can post it here and I would be happy to convert it for you. It only takes a minute.

  7. Okay, if you say that species don't evolve is because they're fit for the environment they live in. So if they're fit for that environment then that must also mean that their resources are right where they are--leaving room for them to settle and discover new things such as creating more advanced tools than what they've been using before their settlement.
Monkeys have settled in the jungle for long periods of time, yet they haven't used much of their brains.

Like I already said, just because part of a species evolves, that doesn't mean that there wouldn't still be some left how they are.
If humans evolved from monkeys, that doesn't mean that the rest of the monkeys are going to evolve into humanoids. The species
branches off from the other and they both continue to exist.

  8. Okay... monkeys have existed waaay before we existed, yet they still haven't developed technology that ties in with us. Since we "came from monkeys" they've existed before us, thus should give them soo much time to develop their minds.
However, monkeys are at a stall, and they still haven't developed technology the same as humans do. They still act the way they do millions of years ago. We've just been here recently and we've developed the fastest. How come other animals couldn't do that?

Well, we could be a branch off from the development of monkeys, in which case the monkeys would have evolved (humans being the product of evolved monkeys). Just because part of a species evolves doesn't mean that the rest of the species will. Time alone does not change a species. There needs to be an environmental factor driving the change. A species could stay the same for extended periods of time if it is fit for it's environment. This is why we still have roaches and lampreys which haven't evolved much at all within the past hundred(s) million years. They don't have to evolve because they have no problem surviving as they are.

I would say that a possible reason for our intelligence and accomplishments is that we eventually stopped wandering and learned to farm and live in a localized area. Since humans spent less time searching for food and hunting, they might have had time to use their brains more for things less related to survival. It seems that there were more arts, crafts, and other non-survival related activities being created once people started settling in one place for extended periods of time. Some of these activities involve more abstract thinking.

  9. Oops! Seems like the intent was lost in translation. ;)

I could have made the green to be red or at least, have it sprout as read and gradually turn to brown and then green. It did not cross my mind that they are growth/sprouts out of hear. ;)

Yeah sure we can. If not anything, it will give us the satisfaction on working together and also hone our skills.

foolakadugie, do you have a blog or website. I am thinking of putting it up at my blog (Splat), where, of course, I would give the credit on concept to you. I would also link to you if you give me the URL on where to link.

You are welcome to interpret it anyway that you like. ;) They are supposed to be growing out, but I wanted there to be a sort of duality where the flowers still had the quality of squirting out as blood might, which is why they are sort od messy and the stems aren't even complete in certain places. Also the splattered paint sort of adds to that impression.

I actually do not have any recent web pages of my own, which is a bit ironic since I have spent time on so many other ones and none were for me personally. I do stay busy with work, but I would really like to eventually put up a professional online portfolio for myself. I do have a blog type thing on my Stumbleupon account, but it is mainly just images of other people's work and links to their sites; Although Occasionally I do post some of my own work there. If you want you could also just do a link to my email foolakadugie@gmail.com.

  10. I tried to type an article in arabic using macromedia dreamweaver but the words comes in left to right, how to use arabic without mixing up words?

That is an interesting question. I never really thought about the logistic of building web pages with text going in thew opposite direction. I don't know if you have read this but I just found this link that seems to have some interesting suggestions regarding this subject: http://forums.xisto.com/no_longer_exists/

  11. The work at my job did extend that I could not work on it yesterday.

But today ;), I have been able to work on it.

Here is a direct translation of the work:

    Posted Image

It was a good learning experience working on foolakadugie's original concept/artwork that can be found in the first post of this thread.

As I said earlier, I will be trying another piece of work, seeking inspiration from his work. I will try to bring in my own composition, color combinations, mood and interpretation, and try and execute it with vector art.

Again, I must give my due thanks to foolakadugie, Randy Hutchins, for letting me work on this artwork that is based on his original concept.

nice study. It is interesting to see it in vector. Adding the green color to the stems really sort of turns the heart into a vase whereas in mine the flowers/vines sort of seem to be spurting out form the heart as blood would. It really adds a different feel to the image. It would be interesting to do a sort of community art peice, where everyone sort of adds on to the same project and to see how it would evolve and change.

  12. Alright, Im going to ask you guys this question:
Out of all the thousands (millions) of species in the world, how come only one has intelligence so much superior than the others?

If you disagree with that statement, prove me wrong that another species has the same intellectual capability as us in which they can build cars, houses, phones and other man-made object. I'm sure there's a number of animals that can make their own houses (made of dirt or rock) but can these animals build anything that takes them to outer space? Wage war against each other by the masses?

Humans are very special. We are "scientifically" animals, but we are not like any other animal. We have souls, feelings and emotions.

How come only one species has so much mind and intellectual superiority?

How do you know that other animals do not have emotions and feelings? Can you prove that? How exactly do you define a "soul"? There has to be extremes to any spectrum.

Humans were not traveling to the moon and building cars and phones until very recently (relatively). Even humans were hunting and gathering nomads at one time. They probably started out using tools much like tools that monkeys have been found to use. Our technology builds upon other technology. We would have never gone to the moon until we discovered how to start fire. Even certain birds have been known to use tools. The human brain has become larger over the time that our species has survived. Who is to say that that couldn't happen to monkeys or any other species in another few million years?

  13. Hi,This means the eth0 couldnt get any ip address.
Do you have a DHCP server on the LAN ?

or you can do one thing.. have a static IP for the eth0 (assuming eth0 is the network card hooked on to your LAN). Open '/etc/network/interfaces'

    and have something like this...

    ======
    # /etc/network/interfaces -- configuration file for ifup(8), ifdown(8)

    # The loopback interface
    auto lo
    iface lo inet loopback

    # The first network card - this entry was created during the Debian installation
    # (network, broadcast and gateway are optional)

    auto eth0
    iface eth0 inet static
    address 192.168.0.50
    netmask 255.255.255.0
    network 192.168.0.0
    broadcast 192.168.0.255
    gateway 192.168.0.10
    ======

Remove all the other interfaces ie. eth1, eth2... till wlan0..
    Now check...

    Cheers

Well in windows under LAN properties it gives me an IP for the DHCP Server.
Does this carry over to Linux? Oh and if it matters, I am not behind a router.

I will boot into linux and if I can do what you suggested.

  14. I am new to linux and just installed Kubuntu. I have windows XP on my master primary hard drive

and Kubuntu is installed on my slave drive. Everything seems to work great except that I cannot

connect to the internet when I boot into Kubuntu (I also tried Ubuntu). I am thinking maybe it has

something to do with ethernet adapter driver. I can connect just fine in windows, so I know that

the actual hardware isn't messed up. Windows uses the driver for Realtek RTL8139/810x Family

Ethernet NIC. I looked through google and help forum threads and it seems others have had this

problem with similar adapters and many of them never came to a resolution and others got it

working and were not quite sure what got it working. Kubuntu is supposed to install the hardware

automatically and I really don't know how to install linux drivers. Does this sound like a driver issue?

I would really like to get this resolved, because I really can't enjoy an OS without an internet connection.

When I open the web browser and attempt a google search I get something like this:

"An error occurred while loading https://www.google.com/search?q=linux&i8&oe=UTF-8:

    Unknown host https://www.google.de/?gfe_rd=cr&ei=BwkjVKfAD8uH8QfckIGgCQ&gws_rd=ssl;

I tried reinstalling kubuntu to see if that helped and then after booting back into linux

I checked the system log and these were the only entries:

    02/07/2007 02:32:33 PM computername anacron[4478] Job `cron.daily' terminated

    02/07/2007 02:32:33 PM computername syslogd 1.4.1#18ubuntu6 restart.

I tried opening network places and get this alert:

    error - konqueror

The Zeroconf daemon (mdnsd) is not running

I followed some steps from different posts in other forums and I don't really know if they

apply to me or not but I will post the results I got to maybe assist in diagnosing the problem:

I guess this is my kernel version

Does anyone have any suggestions? Any help would be very appreciated.

  15. Well, I will be actually doing it on two fronts foolakadugie.

One, I will just try out a vector art impelementation of your artwork itself. It will be definetly nothing but copying, I know, but it will help me study the curves and colors. It will be for my own practice, but I will post it here in this thread itself. ;) There will be nothing of my own in it, other than the conversion work, that I can call my own, and obviously I will give the credit to you.

As another piece of work, I have been thinking and doodling around on another concept (that is ofcourse a fork from this one), and this particular piece of work you would be a spark of inspriation in that process. I have been thinking of some more ideas, in terms of some duality that can occur on a person, that I will put in this second work I am talking about. I would again, definetly credit you on the original concept. (But hey! For this one, I will try to stake out as much credit for myself as possible. ;) ;) )

I hope today's work at my job does not eat up a lot of my time and energy - I am looking forward to work on this.

    Sounds great! Enjoy!

I look forward to seeing them.

  16. Whoa, that is, like, totally cool. I doodle ALL the time, and yet... I still kinda stink. Yours was totally awesome. Maybe I should take an art elective or something...

    thanks ;)

Just practice and maybe try looking at other art. Look at what you are drawing

as the shapes that it is composed of rather than what it is. That always helped me.

WOw. that is such a good idea.

I like how the idea of blood/veins coming out to create flowers.

How did you come up with this idea?

    Good imagination

    eFX

Well I was just thinking of symbols of love and growth, etc and just sort of fused them together.

I think I had been awake for about 48 hours and sleep deprivation always seems to put me in

    a creative mode.

Yes, you can always add more details. That is the flexibility we have when we are working digitally. And I do know how it is when we start to work on something and we feel there is a lot we can do, but we need to do it with in a particular time. ;)

Hey, foolakadugie, would it be fine if I tried illustrating this using vector art? I like the concept.

If you only plan on doing it for your own personal enjoyment/practice/learning, then go right ahead,

but if you plan on posting/displaying it somewhere, would it be ok to give me some credit for the concept?

Maybe just mention that it was based on an illustration/concept of mine (My name is Randy Hutchins).

If you do, I would really like to see what you could do to make it your own work/interpretation. See what

you can do to bring in your own composition, personality and style to it (because that is what art is all

    about, right? ;) ).
