  1. I really don't understand what all this hue is about!!! Before making such an issue about it, we should see the technology behind it. Google just "scans" e-mails, picks out some keywords, and shows some ads about it!!! all this is quite automated with no human interference, and the keywords aren't stored in any log files either - the minute you close the browser window - it's gone. and besides, this is a very clean way of ads, they give us exactly what we want and not some ****.
  2. whoa!!!! i don't believe they finally managed to do it!!! this seems to be a major breakthrough, but worries me about one thing... it is in human nature to not use such "amazing" things for the purpose they are made (i.e. benefit of the society) but, as i envision it, it could only mean the army soldiers who are already so highly-armed, now in mechs which protect them and give them additional lethal weapons. it will be interesting to see how Neogentronyx keeps this technology away from future wars.
  3. Well, i finally got rid of norton and installed avast in place and the first virus scan threw up over 148 spyware, trojans and adware + plus viruses!!! whew!!! I wonder how norton managed to fail to notice all those. But the good news is that i'm no longer getting those messages or thos baloon helps, which efeectively means that my comp is finally (almost) virus free. so there!!!
  4. Actually the real reason why i'm keeping away from linux is that i need to do a whole lot of transition and my windows files can't be accessed on linux (i've heard that it is possible, but being new to linux i don't know how)And the second problem is that i simply hate working with the command line cause you have to remember the command codes. and the only line which i knew is how to extract a tar file.Other than that, i have no problems with linux. I have to agree it's fast, smooth and secure.
  5. I never knew Xisto had that option. to tell the truth, i really didn't expect it. this only certifies that Xisto is the best out there. thanks trekkie!!! i owe you this one
  6. As I said before, I'm a hardcore gamer, so I need all the support I can, for which windows is much better. And you are right, windows and linux have their own strong points, it's just a matter of decision. Just like you are quite comfortable with linux and support it, I support windows, and now all the more 'cause I've experienced linux. I agree, any program can be learnt, even 3D MAX, if you give it enough time, but since i'm in the last year of high school, I need to put in extra efforts this year so i just don't have time fiddling around. Besides, my dad who's completely obsessed with windows, won't like me installing linux in his partition (where else can I install it???)
  7. Well, I can do that, but doesn't it simply ruin the purpose of Fantastico, i.e. to install such big scripts in less time??? Cause it will take me >3 hours to install manually. Any other solution??
  8. From what I've been hearing, Avast seems to be pretty good. I'm currently using Norton, and trust me, it is really useless. Not at all worth the money - you are better off with Avast or AVG. My past experiences with McAfee keep me away from it, it caused more prolems than viruses!!!
  9. I have installed Gmail notifier (like most of you out there) and since i'm the only one who mostly uses the computer, i've saved the password (besides, my profile is protected by a super password no one can guess ) the prob is that it asks me the password (though the password field is not blank) every time i start the computer. Is there anyway to remove this prompt when you start the comp???
  10. Well, i do have a decent graphic card (geforce FX 5200 overclocked) but i haven't upgraded my drivers for quite some time, so that ma be the culprit. hang on, just let me check my driver details..........yup, they are old - better update them thanks for the help!!!
  11. Well, if you're going to see who's the best overall then it is really impossible to say since both are unique in their own ways. Yahoo! excels in image search (this is what people have been saying lately) but the sheer size of the results google gives is incomparable. Also, if you count value added services (free, mind you) like GMail (much better that yahoo mail) adsense, and the other features like translators, etc., google does have the upper hand.but even yahoo may be nice - who knows? I've never used it (i wonder how i used to live before google)
  12. well, reinstalling won't be possible since I have over 100 GB of files, and seting up things to as they were before will take a LOOOOOOOOOOOOOOONG time (plus there is a headache of updating windows all over again)so i guess i'll just have to bear the grudge and live with it. or do I???????
  13. I just made my website on Xisto and when i when i went to cPanel for the first time, it said that that only 3.66 mb of space was available and 16.34 mb was used up. that is really strange, cause the disk usage viewer shows only approx total 0.26 mb total space used. I wonder what is occupying this 16.34 mb space, as i am unable to use even Post - Nuke which requires atleast 13 mb space.
  14. Exactly!!! I am a complete home user (an amateur web designer) and a hardcore gamer!!! And since I live in India, a lot of hardware is available here (which I use often) which is not supported even by Windows, so forget linux. Besides, i prefer windows cause believe it or not, it has the most customisable desktop. you do need to download some programs, but they are easy to use and really powerful. (and i have a weakness for good looking desktops - see mine )
  15. If you don't get those messages, and I'm the only one here - It can mean only one thing - spyware/trojans. But that is weird, since i use norton antivirus 2004 (updated), aware se and spybot s&d, and still nothing has been detected. and yes, no suspicious processes in msconfig or the registry.
  16. This is quite an old topic, but I am here to relate my experience. I wanted to start a new thread cause is feel there are many out there like me with similar experiences. But first, a background - I've been using windows for over 7 years now, right from 95 to xp pro here. (the only version is skipped was 2000 and me) I have become the proverbial 'guru' in my area - if there was anything related about computers, it had to be me. Then, I heard about linux. I wanted to try it out, but was shy. But then, 1 month ago I got an opportunity to test it out when windows crashed and needed another system temporarily. so i promptly installed mandrake 10.2 (i don't know the version properly). installation was fine, and i even managed to set up the net. but then the problems started. any file that i downloaded was in .tar (or something like that) and i knew how to extract it using the command line, but this is where linux fails. It took me a lot of time to find the command line editor. fortunately, i figured out how to fix windows and as soon as i did, i formatted the linux partition. bottom line - linux is not bad (honestly, even i liked it) but the basics are not in place. an inbuilt utility to open such basic files and other such programs must be embedded within the system, and not given as "software packages". Improvement is definately required, now that we are seeing a precursor of longhorn.
  17. Hey you all, thanks for setting up such a wondeful service!!! I just submitted my application and I can hardly wait for it to be accepted cause I dying here to test out Post NukE!!
  18. Well the basic advantage of a fusion reactor is that it gives enormous amount of energy. For example, 1 gm of hydrogen gives enery equivalent to burning tonnes of coal. NOW that's power. And, yes, the pollution is also less. The best example - the sun. Imagine having a mini sun right on earth!!!
  19. Can you tell me which is the best FTP client for uploading a large website like PHP Nuke / Post Nuke??? I used to use Core FTP lite but it crashes, and in cute FTP (evaluation) when the timeout is broken, the whole queue is broken and I need to do things individually. Is there any nice program (free) which does things with out needing any manual interference???
  20. Hey Styx, if you think if you can get away by flooding and multi - posting, you're wrong. I know you are a newbie and want the web hosting (just like me), but you need to do it slowly and steadily, unfair methods will only complicate the matter further!!!
  21. I've scoured the net over, but I still haven't found a proper website which offers free hosting with a decent space, PHP, CGI, mySQL and a control panel, and all the goodies. one site, http://www.globalweb.com.ru/ '>Global Webseemed to offer decent features at first, but when I wasted 3 hours uploading Post - Nuke, it didn't work cause the website disabled certain features which prevented the site from working properly. Will i face this problem with Xisto also? I hope i am not disappointed
  22. I have a compaq presario s4030il. it's quite ancient, but i've upgraded it enough to this config:p4 1.9 GHz (williamette)sis chipset384 mb ddr ramgeforce fx 5200 lg 17" LCD monitorcd/dvd combo40 + 160 GB hard disks...now, i want to know that if i want to upgrade my system, will i need to upgrade everything? cause i've heard processors of a faster speed are no longer available which are compatible. so i guess i'll have to upgrade my motherboard, ram (ddr2) g card (PCIe) and so on, right? any other option??
  23. hey guys, feels nice to be finally part of a community that i've always wanted to join. A little on me though:* I am 15 yrs old, living in India.* I'm crazy 'bout technology* I'm really nice at the comp (in general - i don't specialize, but web designing is my fortee)Forgive me if I overpost but that's in my nature. It is true i've joined partly 'cause of the webhosting plan, but i will be a sure member of your community!!!P.S. expect me only on thursays and fridays
  24. A recent article came in the paper that france had been selected to play host to the world's first nuclear fusion reactor. I was very glad that such a big and important step was finally taken, but was also a bit surprised. as per my knowledge, to initiate a fusion reaction, one needs a very high temperature and no vessel hithertohas been created that can withstand such a high temperature. so, if the plans have been made, i guess the technical difficulties must have been solved. but does anyone know how?
  25. Unbelieveable but true - ever since I've reinstalled windows, I've been getting this message from windows security centre in a dialogue box that my computer is not properly protected and blah, blah.... and it asks me whether i want to learn how to protect my computer (as if i don't know) if i click yes, it opens firefox and takes me to this site which obviously is not a microsoft site. also, many times i get a baloon with a similar message. when i click it, norton says that a "trojan horse" was detected and deleted. so is this how microsoft protects my computer?
