  1. I'm not sure if this is the right forum, but this issue is seriously upsetting, and I'm actually on the verge of tears just typing it...I was playing Jigsaw Detective on pogo.com and it kept freezing and half the time the puzzle pieces never showed up... so I checked the help section and saw a suggestion to update my Java version. So I uninstalled my previous installation (version 2, I believe it was) downloaded the manual installation of version 5, set it up, restarted my computer, signed back online, opened my game, and got a "Java Not Found" error. I made sure Java was enabled, restarted again, and still nothing. I tried opening up the Java control panel in the windows control panel, but nothing happened. I noticed a process named javaw in my task manager, but no application opened. I even uninstalled and reinstalled the plugin, but still no luck. After 3 unsuccessful installations, I tried doing a system restore to before I uninstalled my initial Java version (2) and tried reloading my game. The window opened and said "starting game", but then the entire browser crashed completely. I cleared my cache, tried signing on again, but the same thing keeps happening. I've done 3 system restores, but nothing's worked. I don't know what I did, but it must have been bad. Please help!

  2. Hey there, great layout idea :P You could also try checking out HTML Goodies for a lot of great tutorials, including CSS and div layers. For the scrolling menu, go to Dynamic Drive and check out the navigation section. They have a bunch of dhtml scripts for menus and navigational tools that are pretty neat. Of course, if you ever need a little help, I'd be more than happy to lend a hand. I just moved to West Virginia, I have nothing else to do Lol Best of luck :D

  3. I think the level of experience/time needed to customize any template really depends on how organized and complex the components are. I've seen templates that only required 2 or 3 minor changes to be fully customized, and I've seen some that take days or even weeks to get right (which is usually the kind that I get asked to take care of)That is a beautiful template, and the functionality I think is amazing. Given the initial appearance and complexity of this particular template, and assuming you just want to change text and content, I say you should have a fully customized template in a couple hours. If you want to do a lot of image and effects editing, it might take the whole day or even a few. Of course, I don't have any real experience with flash, but if you do I'm pretty sure you'll be able to do all of it yourself. Usually with a flash template, you just have to edit a text file with the url's and content... the rest I guess you'll have to know a bit about Photoshop and have some type of flash editing program like Fireworks or something. If you're pressed for time, not sure how, or just plain lazy I could look at it a little bit for you (at least with the psd and html anyway). I just moved to West Virginia and have no car, so I have nothing better to do LolBest of luck, and be sure to post up the final product, I'd love to see it :D

  4. I think you should seriously look into learning PHP. Not only is it pretty easy to learn, in my own opinion, I think it's more functional and versatile than CGI. Not to mention the fact that PHP and MySQL are a great couple (and when you're making a members area, those databases are a dream... most of this time) I'm actually in the process of making an advanced My Space-like members area myself, and I couldn't imagine doing it in CGI but I could see how it would work for you, given the simplicity of what you're going after. Anywhos, I'm not the brightest bulb on the Christmas tree, but I think you should check out PHP.Best of Luck!

  5. Have you ever gone to a website and all you see is a directory listing of a bunch of files and folders instead of an actual webpage? That's what happens when you don't have an index page in your root folder. If you don't have an actual homepage up yet, you could always make a simple "Under Construction" or "Coming Soon" page. Personally, when I visit a site and see a directory listing, I tend to forget about it, but I bookmark sites that have coming soon or UC pages so I can see what the finished product looks like.Best of luck :)

  6. thanks, infamousflame! Ya know, the lime green was the only color that I liked for the main text... White was just as bad, but none of the others were really visible or they just looked like crap against the dark teal.I really don't need help with the setup of the site (I use XMB for all my forums, have for a year) but I am looking for people who would like to be support techs, designers, account admins, and stuff like that when the site is finally up. Hopefully, everything will be finished by the end of the month.Link exchanges are always welcome, provided you don't mind being put inside of a box that says "link whores" lol that's just my sense of humor :P

  7. finaldesign - Great site! You're very talented :P Yeah, I've checked my site on 3 different computers with 3 different browsers, and it always comes out teal to me *shrug* I dunno... I actually am looking for help with my advanced webpage generator (I get all these great ideas in my head, but I can never make them work =/) It's mainly inserting and pulling data to and from the database. (I'm not too good with db structure either) If you're interested, I'll PM you the details :P

decima526 - Thanks a lot, I appreciate it :P I guess I could try using a color a little more websafe while sticking to my awesome color scheme... I'll post it up when I get the chance.

Thanks for the positive feedback everyone, I appreciate it :P

  8. from my point of view: that lime green does not hurt my eyes, and eyes of others too, because it's on black background which is good. If it where black on green backgr. that would be killing of eyes. ok enough. your page is really innovative, and I like that you will givin free services to selected group of people.. so anyway I hope that you will finish most of your site soon, so I can pay a little attention to it, cos I found it interesting. maybe we can even do some link exchange sometime in near future with banners, buttons, or just text links, whatever you like :P. anyway, nice job there.

    <{POST_SNAPBACK}>

The background shows up as black on your computer??! Whoa, it's supposed to be like a medium teal! Lol Well, as long as it looks good :P Thanks a lot for the compliments, I really appreciate it! The site will be mostly done as soon as I get paid hosting (which will hopefully be this week) then I just need to get the rest of the hosted tools up. I'm actually looking for people to help out with the site, since I've started taking care of my 8 month old nephew as well as my 1 1/2 yr old son, so I won't have as much time as before to tend to accounts, support, updating and all that. Anywhos, thanks again and I would love to do an exchange!

  9. I'm too big a fan of scrolling either, but I didn't think it'd be a big deal because the main page is pretty much just there for looks and navigation. Besides, I didn't want to take up a bunch of space and have to fill it with more empty space, useless filler text, or ads. The only thing that will be loaded into the content box will be the signup forms for the hosted tools and the news, which no one ever reads. Everything else opens in external windows, so there's really nothing to get distracted from :P

  10. That looks a lot better, I personally think you should stick with the brightened image. With the darker one, the stroke (which actually looks more like an outer glow) made the text look blurred. I also have horrible vision, so it gave me a headache :/ But the brightened version is a little less strenuous to read, and you can also see the detail of the brushwork and opacity changes a lot better. Great job :P

  11. Oh, sweetheart, we need to talk...

First of all, your page starts off with an echo (which is supposed to look like this:)

    <?php echo(); ?>
I admit that I'm not the brightest crayon in the box, and I've never seen a page begin this way, so I'll automatically assume that it's a mistake... What are you echoing? Second of all, if you're going to code your entire page in PHP, you just can't open with a PHP tag and then start HTML'ing... It's going to cause parse errors. Your page doesn't have to begin with PHP to become a .php page. From what I can see, the whole point of making this a PHP file is to include your blog and menu, right? All you have to do is take out the deformed echo tags at the beginning and end of the codes, keep your include code, and save the page as a PHP file. Here, I'll do the work for you:
    <html><head><TITLE>FEAR AND LOATHING | did I say that out loud? can they hear me?</TITLE><LINK media=screen href="index.css" type=text/css rel=stylesheet><META content="Microsoft FrontPage 4.0" name=GENERATOR><body bgColor=#C7B299 leftMargin=0 topMargin=0 onload="window.defaultStatus='FEAR AND LOATHING IN LAS VEGAS';" marginheight="0" marginwidth="0"><center><table cellSpacing=0 cellPadding=0 style="border: 0pt;"><tr vAlign=top><td><img src="new.jpg" border=0></td></tr></table><table cellSpacing=0 cellPadding=2 width=529 style="border: 0pt;"><tr vAlign=top><td width=150 bgColor=C69C6D><?php include("menu.php"); ?></td><td cellpadding="0" width=371 bgColor=#C69C6D style="border: 0pt;"><?php include("blog.php"); ?></td></tr></table>        </td></tr></table></table></body></html>

And one more thing: If your page is coded in PHP, unless you have PHP installed on your computer and your file is saved in the directory that the installation reads (usually htdocs) when you preview it you'll just see code. If you program the page with an HTML/PHP mix, you'll only be able to see the HTML, but at least it's a lot prettier than brackets and question marks :/ Good luck! Hope this helped a little.

  12. Hi guys! Just lookin for a few comments on my latest site, DM.NET Hosting. It's my little "network" of sites that offers small free hosting accounts, remotely hosted tools (such as forums, guestbooks, tagboards, counters, webmail, etc.), free graphics and design services, a link directory, script repository, and a little bit of useless information about me. Obviously, I can't offer asta's space to my visitors and all those remotely hosted tools would probably eat up all my mb allowance, so this is just up for users to reserve their accounts and get information on the future of DM.NET. Before I get bombarded with ccq's, I'd like to go ahead and address a few issues:

    1. Yes, I know lime green is bright and hurts your eyes... But I like it too much, and can't bear to change it... my apologies.

    2. I noticed that the background color under the navigational buttons is a lighter shade than the rest of the layout's background... I need to fix that.

    3. There's a white space at the bottom right hand corner of the table, I have no clue what it is and I don't know how to fix it.

    4. I forgot to add the drop shadow to the "look here" text. I'll do that later.

    5. The signup form isn't up yet.

I appreciate any and all suggestions (as well as compliments, of course), and with all that being said, you are now free to move about the site.

  13. I'm personally not too crazy about the choice of colors (my site is teal and lime green Lol) And I agree with techocian, the text is a little hard to read. I have horrible eyesight, so without pressing my nose to the screen, all I see is black blur. Try making the text a little larger in font, possibly bolded, and then try adding a 1 or 2 pixel white stroke with an overlay blending mode.Other than that, great work! I'll be posting up a link to my site here in a few, don't forget to stop by and return the ccq :P

  14. Looks pretty good! I'd just like to list a couple of constructive critiques:

    1. The Forum Activity and Featured content boxes aren't lined up with the Main Content box... I can't speak for everyone else's opinion obviously, but I personally have this thing with symmetry, I find uneven things to be a little nerve wracking :/ Also, the Featured box could stand to be nudged up a pixel or two.

    2. I agree with sxyloverboy about the wires... They are a bit too much :/ I would either lose them, or try to blend them in a little more seamlessly. The lighting effects that were used are WAY too harsh, and there's no dropshadow or entry or exit points in the content boxes... So it basically just looks like pieces of wire sitting on top of the page.

    3. This is more of a suggestion than a critique, but I think you should make the content boxes on the left side have an outer bevel effect (so the boxes look carved in, rather than puffed out) and then apply the same glass effect you used for the content box backgrounds as a mouseover effect for the links.

    4. A little color never hurt anyone either, try adding a few shadows and inner glows with the same bluish green you used for the header, I'm sure it'd look great :P

Other than all that, great concept! Be sure to post up the finished product, I'd love to see it!
