Well.. I like Linux cuz it's less buggy and is less of a virus target. Window's costs alot of mula and wouldn't you need a Mac to run OSX Tiger? lol.. either case Linux or a flavour of BSD would be the best way to go.. cheaper... more stable.. = unfortunatley harder to use in SOME cases After using Linux as long as I have I would give the harder to use category to Windows.. I can find an answer to almost ANY Linux question I have in a forum or by googling it.. windows however I have had much problems with :S.. like getting my NetMD to work as a power user... I've tried giving my user the permissions to install device drivers under Windows. but It won't WORK!!! lol but under linux it would much simpler to get that to work.. almost the same way but it would actually work. That is... if my NetMD worked under linux... yet another shinging example of the crippled proprietary world (Proprietary audio format ATRAC3 (netmd) + crappy proprietary software (openmg :S) + proprietary garbage OS (windoze) = one unhappy customer! )... oh well, as soon as I find my Rio Forge I'll be happy again! I've seen it, but I'd stay away from it if you want to try out the true power and fun of Linux... it is good however for those.. shall we say? Computer Illiterate But then again, I don't believe anyone without to omuch knowledge of computers would even know what were talking about here.. I'd agree with qwijibow here if you want a commercial linux distro go for Xandros.. From what I've seen and heard about it, it looks promising... although Linspire has brought us Nvu...

I first learned when I was about 11-12 years old.. lol, my Dad had a couple of HTML book s around so I thought I'd see what I could do, I saw alot of site for games and stuff like that (mostly with Java...) so I was more interested in that aspect than the actual markup.. I just wanted to know how to put myself on the 'net . I was also very interested in VRML... well I haven't seen much of that, but who knows? I mean XVRML anyone?? lol :PAfter that web tutorials took over, as well as reading through premade javascripts.. so I learned "DHTML" that way... and then CSS of course.. So I mostly just picked up tidbits along the way.. :(I don't think a class will do much for you. to be honest I think it holds you back too much.. I'm a homeschool kid tho so I like to do things my way.. which is learn it and apply it! lol.Now I create failry dynamic web pages.. although I've done waaay to many for free.. hmm I should get on this! lol.. Good experiance tho. I now know Flash, HTML, "DHTML", Javascript (a bit rusty on it tho), CSS, and I am learning PHP... all that started with the selfish nototion to have everyone notice me!!! How ironic..

Okay... first of all, FRONTPAGE???? I hope you didn't pay money for it, no offense or anything but you can do waaaay better. I'm not too sure about the latest version but I had FP 2000 and it was crap... sure it has a nice Windoze user-friendly UI and all, and alright it does seem to remind you of almost EVERY of MS app out there but it has one MAJOR problem.... it's made by M$!!! The King of all things unsupported and clumsy... just take a quick look at the code that it generates behind the scenes, after you've created a relativley "simple" site with navigation, lets say about 10 pages... you've got nothing but clutter. Even the templates leave something to be disired. Also, try loading up one of your frontpage created pages under another browser (no NOT IE ) like opera, firefox, mozilla... you'll see the pain people have to go through for microsofts ignorance, half the time if you create anything moderatley "dynamic" under FP you'll get a mess of M$ vb code or w/e.. last time I made a website with FP was almost 6 years ago and I can't even stand to look at it anymore... slow, bloated, half-works... ugh.If you want a REAL website designer go for GoLive or Dreamweaver, or better yet go for the freebies.. like Nvu.. or Bluefish (seeing as how your header does mention Programming.. ) If you want good programming.. stay *away* from FP... I personally use Quanta or KDevelop (but those are for Linux.. so your outta luck here) But on windows I'm *trying* Nvu, but it does remind me a bit of.. ugh.. Composer.... I used to use dreamweaver religiously... very easy to use, powerful, and creates decent code (as decent as you can get with WYSIWYG). I no longer use it as I don't have the mula to pay for it and I don't feel like stirring up any legal troubles by using a crack ....So once again... stay away from FP...YOU HAVE BEEN WARNED!!!Good luck!

XHTML and CSS are here to stay for a good while.. for one thing, becuase of a point already noted that browser can parse XML/XSL differently... and just like Javascript (I know thats a very different comparison but bear with me here) you're gonna get attack of the browser wars with a certian Redmond giant addeding in "special" features that are incompatible with others.. it's happened also with CSS and colored scroll bars.. well the list can go on... :DBut I do think that perhaps eventually XML/XSL could take over,, but by then we'll prolly have some new-fangled markup language / script / interface hybrid or w/e to take over that..It's a vicious cycle.. but an in interesting one at that

I like to use or have used each of these programs and I know they all have their pros and cons.. lets see what you think is the best... and let me know why too! :DI could've put this in the website forums.. but I like Linux so it'll all work out. :DGood Luck!

The 3D modeling program I use, is called Blender. It is a free, open source (now) program and I've run it on both Windows and Linux alike. It runs fast and relaibly on both OS's and is my personal favorite right now. Also has a nice game engine, and a big community full or tutorials and tips. I'm pretty sure there is a free online manual for it.. I've used it and learned how to make a gingerbread man (buttons, textures, and all) and animate him within 30 mins... Very useful for animations, mini-games, 3D layouts, etc.. I've seen some very beautiful pics made from Blender. Also has a rendering plugin for more realistic rendering that you can get from it's site. https://www.blender.org/ Give it a try!' Good luck!

Linux distros I have used.. are: 1. Tomsrtboot (linux on a floppy.. great rescue companion) 2. Turbo Linux (Euro-linux.. I tried ver 7.. and wasn't too impressed, but it was a loong time ago too.) 3. Mandrake 7,8,9,10 (I really liked this until I ran into some problems w/ the configuration GUI) 4. SuSe 9 (I tried, I liked, KDE as default.... very well updated, good for newbies and businesses) 5. Redhat 7,9 (Was the de-facto standard a while ago, that is until they broke it up into two) 6. Fedcore Core 1,2,3 (And soon 4.. my current version is 3, and I love it.. you get some good control but it holds back a bit.. doesn't quite know wether it's a power user or a newbei user distro) 7. Gentoo 2004 ( I tried... takes a looooong time to install do to compiling EVERYTHING from scratch, I liked the control tho.. mua ha ha ha) And I'm sure I've missed a bunch but those are the ones that stick right now.. I would recommend Mandrake to the newbie, and fc to the inbetweener, and possibly gentoo to the power hungry such as myself... note: i haven't used mandrake in over a year so I could be wrong about it currently.. maybe they've turned a new leaf? If your a cheapo like me.. (one of the many reasons im using Linux ) Then try wine.. you can get build for all sorts of distros from winhq.org or updates from your distro.. try googling around for "wine config" and you can prolly find some good configs for wine that will allow you to use the more common apps and games... like CS, UT, DOOM 3, etc... Wine is CONSTANTLY being updated so if your app doesn't work right now.. chances are they are workin on it. Also be sure to check out their application db.. it has many reviews and lots of helpful advice for getting any perticular app up and running... (e.g. internet explorer, kazaa, to name a few) I definatley would not recommend VMware for any 3d gaming unless you like 1 fps ... It can be slow, and often works well only with business oriented apps. And lastly of course you can try Codeweavers or Transgamings variants for a bit of mula... Good luck!

Xandros is a very user friendly distro, there is also Lindows (which uses a special packing system called the CNR Warehouse). But, if you want a completely free and well "complete" linux distro, I would go for either Mandrake Linux, or Suse. Depending on what yor needs are... if it's a home computer go for Mandrake.. it has very many UI configurations (So you don't have to learn the behind the scenes of it all, though I highly recommend you do), and many third party apps are supported well by it via the Mandrake Cooker. I would recommend getting a book on Linux Administration from your local library or something similar if you are really interested in it.
