Apple's Multi-button Mouse ... Finally !
madcrow replied to cyph3r's topic in Websites and Web Designing
There WAS actually a cartoon character named Mighty Mouse at some point. It would be kind of funny if Apple got sued for using the name.As for the actual features, I still prefer a normal mouse. -
Disabling/Enabling Some Of Windows Features
madcrow replied to soleimanian's topic in Websites and Web Designing
Wow, some of these are quite useful (who needs balloon tips anyway) But some of these are kind of odd... For example what reason would there be to disable the task manager... That makes it kind of hard to deal with programs that go wrong... which is a lot of them in Windows. -
Well, persoanlly, I wouldn't go with either chip. AMD makes better CPUs by and large and they're slightly cheaper too. So I'd take a look at a 64-bit AMD CPU rather than any 32-bit CPU.

Is It Possible To Create A Cell Phone Modem?
madcrow replied to tansqrx's topic in Hardware Workshop
Well, techinally these "cell phone modems" aren't real modems as they don't convert digital signals into sound and then back into digital signals. A true cellphone modem would be possible though for any cellphone that has a place to plug in a handsfree kit. You could write a computer program that does the work of a modem and then output it as sound through the headphone port. The sound input could then come into the program through the microphone port. You would need to hack up a handsfree kit, but you COULD use a cell phone to connect to the phone network the same way as a normal modem. -
Somebody modified the now open-source Doom Engine to create a brand new #D sonic game. It looks pretty good and aparently plays great to. I'm getting it as we speak, but it's a 49 MB download and I'm on 56K...

This SHOULD work on a vanilla a1200, although you won't be able to create the most powerful effects and stuff.

If anybody here is interested in the excellent little computer known as the amiga, here's a tool that will let you put together cool presentations of sound and video known as demos with very little fuss. It has an HTML/XML like syntax and so is easier than a "real" language but still packs plenty of power. http://www.k-fighter.net/ Maybe we can arrange a little competion on this. E-mail or PM me for help in setting up an Amiga emulator to run this on a more mainstream computer.

Yeah, Real Alternative is a great program. This suggestion is actually just a do-it-yourself version of the same things that Real Alternative does automatically. It IS nice to know how to do things by hand though...

The netcode is pretty good as far as I can tell. Cube's code is VERY advanced and Sauer's does the job (and is constantly improving)

A Note To All Illegal Windows Xp Owners
madcrow replied to prosorcerer's topic in Websites and Web Designing
It's generally possible to get the updates without using the Automatic Update feature. I don't bother getting the updates at all, though. -
The general consensus is that AMD makes better CPUs than Intel. Sadly, you can't just swap out an Intel chip for an AMD chip on your motherboard. You'll need a whole new motherboard that has a place that an AMD CPU can plug into. So I wouldn't reccomend immediately switching to an AMD CPU, but you should remember the fact that AMD makes the better chip when it comes time to buy your new computer.

Install Linux Without Format Or Partitioning
madcrow replied to prosorcerer's topic in Websites and Web Designing
Yup, Live CDs have been around for a while. When I first saw this topic, I was hoping for information about distros that easily dual-boot from the hard drive... -
OpenOffice Or Microsoft ? openoffice.org or Microsoft Office
madcrow replied to JMC1405241503's topic in Software
Well the Presentation program may not be as good as PowerPoint, but I would argue that the important parts, the WordProcessor and the Spreadsheet kick *bottom*. Of course, WordPefect office beats everything and that's a fact... -
Question About Blocking Msn In Linux
madcrow replied to jedipi's topic in Websites and Web Designing
I see. You're one of those evil bosses who wants to control everything your employees do and prevent them from using the internet for anything other than stock quotes and stuff. Notice from qwijibow: Your first post in this thread was tolerated, but this is just pointless spam/flaimbait.please keep your posts relevant to the topic. -
Well if you want to type in Japanese or Chinese or something, you'll want it running... It has caused problems for me, though. Trust Microsoft to write a buggy CPU hogging program that does something somewhat useful and then claim it as a big advance. The similar program in Linux (scim/skim) never causes any problems...

Linux User Needs Help Learning Freebsd
madcrow replied to qwijibow's topic in Websites and Web Designing
Yipes. I'm glad that I surpressed the urge to try out FreeBSD on an older computer. It sounds like Linux is much more user-friendly. -
Install Jdk1.5.0 Under Fedora Core 4 Share my experience
madcrow replied to jedipi's topic in Websites and Web Designing
Well it doesn't look too hard to do, but what advatages does 1.5.0 bring that aren't present in 1.4.x ? Is there anything that is so urgent that we can't wait for pre packaged RPMs. -
Question About Blocking Msn In Linux
madcrow replied to jedipi's topic in Websites and Web Designing
Why would you ever need to block MSN? Do you just not want Windows users to be able to connect to your server or something? -
Visual Studio .NET - Should I Buy It ? Should I Buy It?
madcrow replied to VJgamer1405241488's topic in Programming
I would rather use GNU C/C++ (Available in several Windows flavors) or Borland C/C++ VS.net is the way to go if you want to use C# or generate .NET code tho, as GNU mono (the open-source C#/.net toolchain) just ain't ready for prime time yet. -
320GB Harddrive Any store that manufactures it?
madcrow replied to XMX LoverBoy XCX's topic in Hardware Workshop
Anyone who does a lot of downloading or does video work can use 320 GB and them some. I work on video editing and have tons of space used up on a 250 GB drive. -
OpenOffice Or Microsoft ? openoffice.org or Microsoft Office
madcrow replied to JMC1405241503's topic in Software
OpenOffice 2 has just about all the features of M$ Office and near 100% file format compatability so that you can read files sent to you from less-enlightened people. Given the price and the huge number of features, I'd say OpenOffice is the superior offering. -
Partition A Hard Drive how do you do it?
madcrow replied to infamousflame's topic in Hardware Workshop
Partitioning... to do that you need to use an old DOS-type program called FDISK. Just run it and follow the directions. You'll need to back stuff up first as partioning can destroy the data you already have.
