Hiding Files And Folders.... Two methods to do it
sparx replied to abhiram's topic in Websites and Web Designing
@xboxrulz:That method would work only if the view was currently set in the FOLDER OPTIONS to NOT show "hidden & system folders". Most geeks normally have this option turned off so they have ready access to all their files. Even if you tried using DOS / command line to change the attrib to hidden, it would be child's play to unhide a folder/file. -
just a quick note : I gather people want the page displayed in the browser to be the latest off the site, correct? This means the browser needs to connect to the server and download the content each time a request is made. In IE Options, click SETTINGS on the GENERAL tab. Would it then help if the option CHECK FOR NEWER VERSIONS OF STORED PAGES is set to EVERY VISIT rather than the defaul option of AUTOMATICALLY

Email From Microsoft And Gmail For Your Own Domain For Free
sparx replied to swizzeron's topic in Websites and Web Designing
I'm currently using Gmail for domains and it's just great. 2 GB inbox and the ability to use the intuitive GMail interface is very very useful. I also like the fact that users can also use GTalk and Google Calendar as well. It's easy to administer and there are a few customizable interface options, although in truth, I'd prefer more.I especially like the ability to create multiple mailboxes at once by simply uploading a specially designed table containing the relevant details. Saves a huge number of clicks, especially during the early stages of setting up and deploying mailboxes to everyone. -
[beta] Firefox 2.0 Beta 1 Bon Echo Alpha features locked in.
sparx replied to sparx's topic in Websites and Web Designing
Yes. There are a few settings that you can try to change using the about:config and/or the about:cache commands. More details here and here. Some of what is suggested will definitely help, but ultimately the last bit of tweaking is left up to the end-user. What works for one may not work as well for another. -
I did a search, but couldn't find any mention of it on the forums, so I deided to post the info. Apologies, if it were posted earlier. And the rollout of the "Delete All" / "Empty Trash" links is still being carried out - not everyone has got them yet. As with all new features, GMail spreads it and staggers the deployment across all its users.

Wouldn't it just be easier to use virtualization? Software like Microsoft Virtual PC for Windows and for Mac as well as VMWare will ease thepain for people unable to afford $2500 ! Of course you don't get the hardware but then it's good enough for testing the software, right? Both now have free versions and there are images aplenty of almost all kinds of OS installs. Ultimately, IMHO, it all depends on the need of the person. I would however love to be able to switch between OSes just as we switch between two different application windows now ! Now that's wishful thinking...

I believe that there is a choice of BBS packages that you can install using Fantastico. IIRC, phpBB2 as well as SMF can be installed. As regards your second question, I'm afraid I really can't follow what you're trying to ask...Please be a little clear.

I was introduced to Meebo by users on this forum and have been hooked to it ever since. Now, the little startup has added a new feature which surely isn't available in any of the major IM service providers. The Meebo Me! Widget is essentially a piece of code which you embed into your website code, say in a column to the side of the main content. It allows users visiting your site to chat with you without leaving the same page. The visitor appears as a contact on your messenger list with whom you can interact as he/she is browsing thru your site. Take a look here Whereas, ICQ and other services would allow users to see whether or not a user was online, they would then have to navigate to a separate page in order to send you a message. This is full chat right ont he page itself. I haven't tried it yet, so I can't make any promises on the impact (if any) this will have on bandwidth and performance, but knowing the people and their work @ Meebo, it's sure to be fast and lite !

The GMail user interface has been updated to include the ability to select multiple messages and perform actions on them. In plain-speak: you can select all messages and mark them read or apply a label of choice, all in one stroke. Hard to believe that this functionality wasn't already embedded in, isn't it? Also included for the neat freaks amongst us - the ability to empty the Trash / Spam folders in one click. Well, it's two actually - you need to go the folder in question (Trash or Spam) and then click the DELETE ALL link. That pops up a confirmation alert box, to which you give your assent for the evil messages to be obliterated. A short tutorial is available here

In any case, we need to eliminate possible causes one at a time. Since your box refuses to start up at all, the first thing you need to check is the power supply - use the same power supply in a simililarly outfitted machine and check if it can power up. Use the power supply of that machine in your box to find out if the power supply's at fault or if there is some other fault as well. It seems more likely that your machine isn't getting enough power to even do a POST (Power-On Self Test) as evidenced by the lack of beeps. If you're unable to get another machine, ask your local tech guru for help. [if you are the local tech guru in your neighbourhood, you need to ask yourself - what would BillG do ? ;-) ]

Hiding Files And Folders.... Two methods to do it
sparx replied to abhiram's topic in Websites and Web Designing
I'd still go one step further for deniability and install encryption software like the free and OpenSource TrueCrypt. It allows you to create a file of a particular size which is encrypted. The file will be decrypted when you enter the correct password. When it is decrypted, a new volume is created and mounted. In plain-speak - a new drive appears on your system in which you can dump the files of choice. It appears just like when one plugs in a flash drive or some other media. This isn't all - TC can also encrypt entire hard disk volumes and partitions, so your data is safe even if your hard disk or storage media is no longer in your possession. One can even embed smaller sized containers into existing encrypted containers, thereby adding yet another near-impossible layer of security. Also included is the ability to pick a drive letter when mounted (for the pr0n king, it's gotta be X: ;-) ) as well as hotkeys to quickly dismount a volume or even dismount and quit. A measly 1.35 MB download and it's free. TECHIE STUFF from Wikipedia: TC is regarded as the one of the foremost OTFE (on the fly encryption) programs for both Windows and Linux. The encryption algorithms used by TrueCrypt are AES, Blowfish, CAST5, Serpent, Triple DES, and Twofish. All encryption algorithms use the LRW mode of operation, which is more secure than CBC mode for on-the-fly storage encryption. -
Geting A Domain Name need help never done this before
sparx replied to BitShift's topic in Web Hosting Support
Are you looking to purchase a domain? Or are you looking for a sub-domain redirection service? If you want to purchase a domain - a large chunk of people i know have used godaddy.com as their preferred domain registrar. If you rather have a shorter URL then, I'd recommend ne1.net They offer 2 domains - ne1.net and r8.org so you get a link to your site as: http://forums.xisto.com/no_longer_exists/ I like this provider because you don't need to put up any link or ad and neither do they have any advertising popups, pop-unders, banners etc. Totally clean interface. -

[beta] Firefox 2.0 Beta 1 Bon Echo Alpha features locked in.
sparx replied to sparx's topic in Websites and Web Designing
UPDATE: After playing around with the BETA1, I'm saddened to say that Single Window Mode is still not part of the built-in tab features. Also TabMix Plus isn't working as it used to just by changing the maxver param in the JAR file. So a new version is eagerly awaited. -

Microsoft Live Mesenger 8 BETA and Yahoo Messenger 8 with Voice BETA are now allowing users to add contacts from each others' service. That means a user of MSN messenger or Windows Live Messenger 8 BETA as it's called now can add, view status, send an instant message, include emoticons and send nudges/buzzes to contacts who are using Yahoo Messenger. As of now, you can't send or share files, view common backgrounds, winks and other more complex actions between the two services. The same also applies to users of Yahoo Messenger with Voice 8 - they can add users of the MSN service to their yahoo messenger contact list. Before you can start using the services, you need to sign up for the BETA and agree to the EULA and any other agreements after which you'll be led to the download page. Initial testing indicates that it works as advertised. In Y! Messenger, a drop-down box allows you to select between the srvices available when you try to add a new contact. WLM has a more transparent method wherein you just type in the contacts name followed by his/her yahoo domain (Example: user1@yahoo.com; user32@yahoo.co.in etc.) LINKS: Yahoo Messenger US Yahoo Messenger India Windows Live Messenger More info for WLM

Which was quite true before Palm introduced the Treo 700w which operates on Windows Mobile 5.0. and includes a 1.3 MP camera, but does not have Wi-Fi capability. Full specs here. Also satisfies your price requirement.

Techocian: I beg to differ. Knowing from previous experience that getting and keeping a reliable internet connection are two different things, I'll have to tell you that having your email downloaded to your PC makes it that much easier to read/print something out rather than going online. I'll even venture so far as to say that it also is much faster to access your email when it's on your local HDD than on a server which you might access at a megabit connect too... And what about the times where one can't get online (perhaps the phone line is down / the ISP is performing maintenance etc.) ?? Regarding your proposed shift of strategy for Microsoft, just one word as a question - WHY? Why shouldn't they try to integrate and promote their own services? It doesn't make good business sense not to int his day and age. I don't know about your source of statistics, but I'll quote mine here (Granted, it's a little dated at about five months ago but it's the latest one I could find). According to that, MSN Messenger leads the pack by quite a margin. You also mentioned "80% of the world" and then promptly talked about AOL and AIM which are two sides of the same coin - a mainly US service provider. All MS email clients offer the ability to download mail from GMail using POP3 access. As I'm not familiar with AOL Mail and whether or not they offer POP3 / IMAP4 access, I can't really get back to you on that issue except to say that it also depends on the mail service provider to allow the users different ways to access their email. The new Windows Live Mail will be available with a 2 GB mailbox. Finally, advertising: Which raised more controversy - image and banner adverts in Hotmail / Yahoo etc. or targeted contextual text-ads in GMail? The latter did and still does, inspite of Google's assurances that no "person" reads the content of the emails. Nothing worthwhile comes for free. If you want all the features then you need to pay the price in one form or the other. Of course, if adverts bother you, I'd advise you to use Firefox and the Adblock extension or something similar. If you're an IE user, consider using a shell like Maxthon Browser wherein you can attempt to keep the adverts at bay. I hope this answers some of the interesting points raised by you.

Microsoft has released into limited BETA testing the upcoming replacement to the current free email / news client - Outlook Express 6. It's called https://4'>https://4 https://4'>https://4'>Windows Live⢠Mail Desktop Beta and is designed to provide a seamless experience between offline email management and the new Live⢠family of services. Even though the upcoming http://forums.xisto.com/no_longer_exists/ '>Windows Vista has an existing email client built into the OS called (what else?) http://forums.xisto.com/no_longer_exists/features/forhome/mail.mspx https://x'>https://x https://x'>https://x'>Windows Mail, this client is designed to bring a user's email / contacts from Hotmail or MSN / IE7 news feeds and even WebSearch all in to one UI. Here's the official feature comparison list: http://forums.xisto.com/no_longer_exists/404.png https://g'>https://g https://g'>https://g' alt='Posted Image' class='bbc_img' /> The UI is akin to the new Windows Live Messenger 8, which although looks very pretty, also turns off power users with its wanton waste of screen real-estate. Major cons include the inability to customize toolbars with buttons of choice / inability to add a SIZE column to the message list pane to show the size of the message / lack of the VIEWS dropdown box thru which one could easily switch between various views such as Unread Messages or Flagged Messages etc. The most major negative in this however will be the Active Search pane on the side which will go thru the contents of the email / news post you're reading and display relevant adverts while you're NOT searching. One can opt to turn off the Active Search pane entirely which the developers promise will result in NO info being scanned. https://j'>https://j https://j'>https://j'>http://forums.xisto.com/no_longer_exists/404.png https://g'>https://g https://g'>https://g' alt='Posted Image' class='bbc_img' /> And that's only the stuff that I've gleaned from playing with it for 45 minutes. Now for the plus points: +Built-in anti-spam and phishing filter. Sounds good but the true test lies in how well it functions. +Neat integration with your Hotmail account. I like the ability to automatically sync your local address book with that on your Hotmail/Windows Live Mail online address book +Better integration of the Messenger services. Also useful is the Blog This! button which allows for easy publishing of content from within the client to your SpacesBlog. + New Photomail feature enables the user to make slideshows of images and makes it easier to edit and embed images with effects directly into the email message. https://j'>https://j https://j'>https://j'>http://forums.xisto.com/no_longer_exists/404.png https://g'>https://g https://g'>https://g' alt='Posted Image' class='bbc_img' /> So far, it's best use would be for newbies who've cut their teeth on web-based UIs and need more power such as the ability to use filters and different views to manage their email and also for people who need the offline capability to store and download email. Not for the power user, but then if you were one, you'd be using Thunderbird, Outlook or The Bat!. Still needs to be improved and it will be but at least Win XP users will have a nice pretty interface without upgrading to Vista for the Windows Mail OE look-alike.

Which worm did it turn out to be? ccapps is deceptively similar to ccapp which is an integral Norton Antivirus process. UPDATE: found out that it's the Kangaroo-B worm or NEVEG.B / NEVEG.C variant. Hope you managed to clean it. I recommend creating a disk image of a cleanly installed system with basic utils like media players , messnegers and other apps that you use most frequently. That makes it very easy and hassle-free to restore your system after any threat event has occured. No mess or fuss with re-installing stuff. I mean, who likes staring at progress bars for over 3-4 hours ?
-
Quite correct. Although the worm does no harm to the local computer, it does take its toll on networks by clogging up bandwidth. What's scary is the fact that it's exploiting server-side JScript code to cause damage. All browsers are affected. This is NOT a browser issue, but an issue with Yahoo's implementation of scripting. Take note that this vulnerability does not exist for new BETA interface.

Instead of opting for a PPU, wouldn't adding an additional processor be more helpful? That wouldn't then restrict the PPU's usage to only games/apps which require PPU support. What about the newer Dual-Core chips? Will they still fall short of dedicated PPUs?Also, as a theoretical device this is all well and good, but what will it do for the increased power consumption? Any additional device will always consume more energy and dissipate heat. Are we ready for all this?

I'm delighted with Norton GoBack. I was using the earlier v3 by Roxio. After the Symantec takeover and subsequent amalgamation into the SystemWorks Suite, it became more of a good idea to use SysWorks. The 2006 version is terribly bloated though. The Norton Protection Center is almost useless. My settings are to download Windows Updates but let me install them as opposed to the default - "Automatically download and install" option. Each time I need to reset the option because NPC hanges it back to the "safer" Auto-install option. It should allow the user to define the update choice as per his/her requirements. Eventually, that turned me off so much that I had to disable the NPC service entirely from the Services managment Console. Too bad.........

Speaking of the Redmond Giant - LINK How about that? Now MS will be tying up with iRiver to produce and market so called "iPod Killers". They're also planning to launh their own music purhase store which undoubtedly will be tied in with Windows Media Player in the future. MS has already tied up with MTV and will launch URGE some time later this year.
