  1. what syntax are you using in the reference to your CSS file? the syntax that i use which i find works is: <html><head><title>Page Title</title><link href="mystyle.css" rel="stylesheet" type="text/css"></head>as can be seen it is located in the head block of the html, copying this verbaitum should work correctly assuming that the CSS file is located in the same directory as the HTML file that is referencing it, remember you need to reference every file that you want the CSS file to style for you. another problem may be syntaxing the CSS file, i don't know what sort of effect incorrect syntax has on CSS files. if you are unsure check w3schools css section, for a good tutorial, this is where i learnt the syntax for the one used on my site.
  2. excellent site, cheers! I found when i dabbled in games programming (very very slightly) that there were some excellent recources avalible for directx programming that ventured into engine programming etc. i do not remember the links although i think i googled all of the sites that i used.
  3. hmmm interesting site... a little pointless i guess but very good fun...i would love to see the code for doing the ASCII images since it doesn't use different characters it uses the search term, very clever. i tried to write a program once to convert .jpg's to ASCII images but it failed miserabley maybe i was taking the wrong aproach by using different charachters for shade instead of colour...
  4. gmessenger has not actually been anounced as far as i am aware and therefore must be concidered speculation to googles development. google did however use there own protocol in google desktop search for IM which was addapted from AIMs protocol. This obviously caused the speculation we are now whitnessing. I think it is important to concider the possibility that these roumors may infact be false and there is nothing to back these up with. Googles entire marketing stratergy is based around targeted advertising from search terms, or in the case of gmail from content in emails. how would this work in the case of an IM client? it would be very difficult to manage and would probably only allow people to intergrate with googles other features and since 99% of people use google search anyway what would they have to gain from a business point of view. People seem to lose sight of the fact that google is not an open source developer or a group of individuals doing this for a hobby, they are a business who need to make money from a product, they have been sucessful with creating themselfes a good image from not being to in your face and for having support of OSS comunities, however they are still a business like M$ or IBM they need to make money to survive. this means that they will have to have distinct reasoning to develop software and there must be a money making oportunity there somewhere. UPDATE: this link was posted on slashdot earlier today, link, this does give an interesting, although hypothetical view about the future at google.
  5. i like the one that comes in firefox, it is simple to use however it does have a lack of features. although i do realise this is not really the point of the program to be the most feature packed download manager. i may have to try some of the free ones named in previous posts...i used to use one quite regularly a couple of years back but can't remember what it was i used, this was in the days of 56k when it was important for me to have resumable downloads. althogh it did have the problem of anti-leeching software would often not like it.
  6. I use filezilla, its quick easy and most importantly free. The 'client' in windows for FTP is ok however it is of very limited functionality it does however have the big advantage of being a common environment with the rest of explorer. CuteFTP is a client i havn't used in a while so it might be great now although i just remember it being similar to filezilla and since filezilla is free i may as well use that.
  7. Football (or soccer for the americans) is by far the best sport in my opinion. the best team of course being Aston Villa. Or internationally england, however my support waynes due to the continued support for David Beckham retaining his captency.
  8. Many thanks Overture, i have discovered the problem. The perenthesis was correct, it was my sloppy copying and pasting. The problem was that the i hadn't changed the visited links to none as well!
  9. I am having some problems writing CSS for my site (as in the one hosted here), i am trying to make hyperlinks only underline once the user hovers over them, which seems like it should be simple enough using CSS. However i can't seem to do it, some apper correctly and some are underlined and i can't figure the problem out at all. i have tried in both IE and Firefox and it does seem totally random, different ones are underlined in each and last night they were all underlined on firefox, nothing has been changed since then. }a:link { color: #33CCFF; text-decoration: none;a:hover { color: #00CCFF; text-decoration: underline;} Thats the CSS code i am using, anyone got any ideas?
  10. This topic reminds me of an oldish british program called 'the fast show'. On this program there was a sketch with a seedy looking second hand car salesman and he always used similies for 'making love to a beautiful woman', oh the laughs it was very funny (although probably best whitnessed to be believed that it actually was funny)
  11. i had an intel p3 (well actually it is still running in a system), and i am also runing a P2 on my test box. However i do currently prefer AMD chips, they are more accessable and seem to be a little cooler somehow (i mean metaphorically not literaly ), anyway my vote goes to AMD
  12. thanks Pedro, i did discover that being behind a firewall i had to use passive FTP... you learn something new every day...
  13. Has anyone used DreamWeaver Mx 2004 to upload and automtically update there site... i am having trouble setting it up, i am behind a hardware firewall (easier to setup than dreamweaver... seriously) anyone who has done it or has a good idea could they let me know, thanks. oh i am aware that WYSIWYG editos are a little cheap, but hey thats me all over
  14. I agree with MajesticTreeFrog here, linux development is a little difficult since several packages are usually needed to make a basic functioning GUI then distribution can be anightmare if you happen to be using some obscure package or something. Developing in .net doen't used the windows API quite the same as say Visual C++ 6.0 did, it has become more logical and easy to develop apps quickly that intergrate well with each other and the OS. i can't really comment on Mac development.
  15. I would love a mac however the price has always put me off, however if you can get a G4 for less than £400 (in the UK) i want it. Its a great idea to open macs up to the masses. Apple seems like it can't lose at the moment with whatever it does with the success of the iPod people will be wanting desktop systems by them now so this is the natural extension to the product line.
  16. G-Mail isn't worthless, although the novalty value is starting to ware a little thin the amount of space you get and the quality of the E-mail service is amazing for a free service. Its far better than the competition.however with the method of distributing invites the number will increase exponentially very quickly, everyone can now get an invite who wants one (i have 6 with no use for a start).
  17. yeah winning eleven is pro evolution in europe (wel at least the uk) i play it regularly and have to admit it is the best football series that i have played. its very balanced and its almost impossible to win by unrealistic margins. only problem is they don't have licences for UK teams and kits, for instance the mighty 'Aston Villa' are know as West Midlands Village...
  18. A google web browser would both be able to fit with there advertising methods very well,. however google is a comercial company so i don't doubt there interests would be in advertising depending on surfing habbits, probably also examining our serfing habbits. Put it this way to convice me to use a google webbrowser the software would have to be ALOT better than what is already avalible.A google IM client would be good i think, it is known that they came up with a protocol relating to IM, i think the name was GoogleIM or somehtin. however they stated this was for use with the google search product. I think a google IM would work very well.I think they would risk expanding there business to far however if they were not carful enough so i would be suprised if both projects exist.
  19. Souls makes a very good point, a few licences for Sound forge arn't exactly going to break the bank for any major company even for a commercial licence we arn't talking huge amounts of money really. What would be interesting is if this crakcer licencenced it at M$ as he is an employee there...
  20. Excel '97(?) had that wonderful easter egg in it of the magic carpet style game... oh that kept me entertained for many an hour in business studies...don't know of any in XP though.
  21. yep i can confrim this shocking news is true. it is however no secret that microsoft has little interest in consumer piracy only interest in the 'big guns' so to speak.i have screenshoted the proof so any doubters can be silenced (i was one at first)
  22. This is interesting since i use AVG and have done for a while and have never suffered any problems. The only thing i could think is that you maybe did something else as well as installing AVG? freak coincidence? i didn't even think AVG looked at dialers.... sounds very strange. another thought, have you looked at the AVG forums (if any exist)?
  23. Posetive Internet were amazing for me in the UK, however after a year of being hosted by them i am finding it difficult to justify the expenditure on hosting my own projects in this way. They are however fairly cheap, good customer service and altogether quite good. (i must point out that this is the only pro hosting company i have used.
  24. The BSD's again run a different kernal and have a very different structure of workings than Linux, however they can not be called UNIX as Unix is a tradename it cost huge sums of money to describe and OS as unix. Therefore for OSS projects this is just not feasable. This is quite ironic since Unix itself was started as a project in the 60's at Berkley (is this MIT i don't know) with AT&T and was always supposed to be open. When unix became a tradename that project turned into BSD which means Bearkly Service Distrobution.
  25. JavaScript being exeuted on the client side also gives a huge amount of explotability to a website if used badley, storage of passwords etc in JScript vaiables can easily be read by anyone. It is interesting to see how it can be used though in a website although i prefer Server Side scipting like PHP.
