personally, i'd stick to photoshop. but that's just because i'm used to it. and i don't like the seperate windows in gimp. and how most of the tools are only reachable by rightclick.and i like the fact that it's easy to find brushes and stuff for ps+ it's more user friendly+ more ready-to-use effectsbut gimp is indeed less heavy for your computer. it's powerfull, but you have to do more on your own. well, i'm not really sure. i haven't really tried to master it as i've got ps and i don't feel the need to learn gimp.one thing i like about ps is how you can make slices with imageready and then export it to a html table! that's really cool!

oh yeah, and there is just no way to make your code 100% protected.most of the things can be descrambled anyway. nah!

why would someone want to protect his code?i have no problem with them using the same layout as i do. off course, it's a bit harder to copy php code. and html... well, if they don't steal it from you, they'll steal it elsewhere... no big deal... and ok, you have put some work into it, and it sucks that they just copy it... but then again, you don't loose anything, right?all i'd ever do is put a message on my site: if you want to use my code, please contact me, or something, and ask them to let me know if their site is finished. same goes for pictures. if someone wants to use my pictures, they should just ask me and i'd probably send them the high res version.one more thing:scrambling code suckswatching other people's code is the best way to learn somethingok, 10 people may just copy paste your codebut if one guy/girl really reads it and makes her own thing with it, try to understand it and learn fro it, that's just great right?

iFrame Using a iFrame in your website.
marijnnn replied to =DH=Freefighter's topic in Websites and Web Designing
the only reason i'd use an iframe is for the scrollbar. haven't found a way to display a scrollbar in a table cell. otherwise, using tables should be the way to layout your page and position things.my first site used an iframe. you can still see it at http://forums.xisto.com/no_longer_exists/ iframe is the little box with the text. you can see the source and copy & use it, by rightclicking just next to the border and then choose 'view source'tip: use the style: background: transparent. like that, you can see the background through your iframe, just like on my sitebad thing about iframes is that not all browers support it as well. my site looks cool on internet explorer, but netscape doesn't do a great job. mozilla & firefox do a better job. konqueror is fine too. i think the newest netscape does a good job too though. -
hm, we should all draw a clear line between scripting and programming.asp & php are scripting languages, just like javascript.they are not compiled and thus are by definition slower than real programming languages. they are not meant to be hyperfast either, they should just be easy to learn and be very compatible.java is cool because everyone can use your program. the ability to make web-applets is nice to.i learned programming to c++ and i would advise this to everybody. c++ is a very powerfull language. it's a bit discouraging that you're only writing command line programs in the beginning, no visual stuff. but once you know c++, you know it all: php, java, javascript, shellscript, awk,... vb is really *BLEEP*. i hate programming vb.vb.net is better, but still sucksasp sucks, just like vb.asp.net is pretty ok. it's very cool that you can use c# instead of vb.net, cause c# is pretty cool. it's something between java & c, my two favourite languages.c is very cool if you want to do some network programming.to answer to the question: i'm doubting between c++ & java.c++ is faster i guess, but it's harder to learn visual stuff, while in java, it's really easy to do visual programming. on top of that, java is multiplatform, so 'ill answer... java!

FTP Client Which FTP Client do u prefer?
marijnnn replied to snowlion's topic in Websites and Web Designing
1. smartftp: free, good, and simple2. command line: free, less simple, very good :)3. http://www.net2ftp.com/: if you can't install anything to your harddrive.you can zip your files and then upload them. it automaticly creates folders & subfolders & extracts the zip file! really cool and most of the time better than te ftpclient offered by the host. -
well, it should be AT because obviously, your mailbox is at the hotmail, yahoo, gmail,... serverthat's where it is. like you say: i'm at home. i'm at the race,...but why that symbol? i don't know.here in belgium, we call it 'apestaart' which means 'tail of a monkey', hehe.but then again, most IT persons just say AT

hm, longhorn is gonna be bad i think. it was gonna be released around 2005. now it's 2006-2007 and the filesystem is not gonna be in it yet, but will come later on in a service pack or something like that.meanwhile, apple releases their new os, which is great.also meanwhile, linux distributions keep evolvingbut microsoft will remain same old till 2007... that's just bad.untill then, longhorn will be ... antique... it'll have parts that were programmed in 2002... what to think about that. from what i've heard, it uses huge amounts of recourses too. well, that were beta versions off course, but still. it's a bad thing that it takes so long.apple is doing a great job. they got very popular with the ipod, and they are getting better and better. the os isn't as heavy as xp and certenly not as heavy as longhorn, but very powerfull. gmail servers are macs!!!!xbox will last, but then again: ps3 is coming soon... they'll have to come up with something too!

well, from what i've heard, jsp is more powerfull than asp, however, asp.net is a lot better than just asp. i still prefer php, because of the easy 'programming', though asp.net has improved a lot by letting you decide wether you use vb or c# (c#!!! hell yeah!).another great thing about asp.net is that your scripts aren't handled by a script engine, but compiled to dll files! that makes that opening your page for the first time will be a little slow, but after that, it's very fast. this is great for companies that have their own server with a memory that's big enough to handle a big part of the site. the ddl's will remain in the memory as there's no need to delete them as there's space enough. maybe an idea for php... compile, not interpret

well, i got a gmail account and i like it. it's very cool how they gather maildiscussions, how they group all the "RE:..." messages together.about pop access: there are various programs around that run a server on your computer. you can access that server by adding a new email account in outlook or whatever. you add a pop & smtp server: localhost. and the program makes the connection with google and fetches your emails. i've used several programs but psgmail is the best one if you ask me. but it shareware, not freeware. free alternative: "pop goes the gmail". you need the .net framework for that one. i've tried it, but had no success. it crashed every time i started it. there are other alternatives, try searching google.com or sourceforge.net for "gmail pop"i remember gmail notifier too, but that only notifies you when you get mail. it's easy because you can click on it and you go straight to your inbox, but you can't use outlook. but then again, why use outlook when you have 1gig of space and it's lightning fast?last but not least: linux people! you can actually mount your account as if it were a disk on your local computer! for more info, check :http://forums.xisto.com/no_longer_exists/ small installation and then you can just use the space as a (slow) harddisk. or you could use an account to share files with your friends. make an account you won't use yourself and share the password with your friends.eventually, gmail will have pop3 access, which will make it even more attractive.gmail rocks my bootie!marijn
