  1. Right, OpenGL and animation are unrelated. OpenGL is used for rendering graphics, etc. You will have to completely implement character animation which is not easy. If you want to model a character, use 3DSMax or Maya or something.
  2. C++ across the board. Java and C are also common. C# is up and coming but I doubt it will replace C++ ever. It's good for tools, not so much for the actual game.
  3. I tried sending a 110MB mp3 (80 minute mix) to a friend and it worked beautifully.
  4. Whoa, that's awesome! I'll definately have to try it out.
  5. Actually, it is a [very] small super ultra dense ball of matter. It contained all of the matter in the universe -- matter can't come out of thin air.
  6. While I personally don't like that style, it's quite clear that you are very talented. Great job!
  7. I would use flash like you said. There are TONS of tutorials online. Java would be another option but not necessarily good for beginners.
  8. I'm working at WildTangent now and our games cover a number of different genres. I'm currently doing a word game and my next game will be a tycoon style game. Ideally I'd do some arcade style game as those are by far the coolest and most fun to make. We also make racing games so that would be fun...
  9. So uploading files counts against you or just downloading via FTP?What happens when you exceed your monthly bandwidth allocation? Does your account just lock up until the next month?
  10. But that's a good reason to learn java first -- it's easier to learn programming concepts first. Then move to C++ and learn all the little idosyncricies in that. I just can't make up my mind if that's better than learning all the little things like pointers and dynamic memory first. hmmm...
  11. I'm a game programmer but have not yet been able to break into an A list game. I was working for Sierra most recently which was my big break then they shut down the studio lol. Just my luck. Now I'm back making casual games. But it's actually pretty cool because I have so much ownership and design control over everything. Plus, if the game I'm working on sucks, I'll have a new one in a few months. Our final project for one of my intro programming classes was a MUD of sorts. I think mine turned out pretty neat for not really knowing much in the way of programming.
  12. That's a hard one to answer. I learned C in programming1, and C++ in programming2 and never was taught java. I think maybe for the people with no programming experience at all, java would be a good way to start since it's a simpler and more constrained language. But I voted C just because that's how it was for me and I turned out great!
  13. What exactly is c++.net? I have never heard of such a thing.
  14. You would think that MS's driver would give you that capability. But then again, I'm not surprised. I had an older version of that keyboard with the sleep button on the right corner. My computer will not recover from sleep so that was basically a deathwish to press it. Their driver allowed me to customize all buttons EXCEPT for the sleep button. Why in the world would they overlook something like that? I tried to solve matters myself at 3am once after my cat stepped on the button and lost a few hours of work by drilling out the button. I had to buy a new keyboard after that haha.
  15. I see no one discussed four numbers? ie. 1.1.1.1. This is what we use at work here but I couldn't tell you what all the numbers are for. The first one is the version of the product and the last one is for the build of the product. I assume the other numbers are for QA and other stuff.
  16. I don't understand your question. Are you talking about Visual Studio .Net (which is what I'll assume)? There is no such thing as C++.net. Visual Studio is a development environment and isn't necessarily tied to any specific language. You can program C++, C#, and any number of other languages in it. I have no experience with C# but what I've heard about it sounds really neat. It's very much tied to the windows OS so forget multiplatform stuff with it. But if you need to make a tool or a rapid prototype for something, there are tons of system calls in the language you can use so you don't have to reinvent the wheel or try to find some obscure system call in some library somewhere.
  17. They won't give me a liscense to photoshop here at work so I'm stuck using some downloaded copy of PSP8 which will expire in a month. They do a few things nicer than in PS (like some of the keyboard shortcuts and some of the filters, etc) but for the most part, they seem to be missing some extremely key features (like easy and intuitive to use alpha masking, etc). At least their marquee selection doesn't use 100% of the CPU in this version.
  18. I'm far better at programming then graphic design. I just don't have the talent for that stuff although I do try often to create pretty pictures.
  19. I noticed downtime last week but it only lasted a few minutes and I haven't had any problems since then.
  20. You probably need to turn off the messenger service. Go to control panels and services and find messenger and disable it. Note: this is not windows messenger IM.
  21. You can specify an IP in your network settings but if it doesn't match the IP your ISP gave you, you won't be able to get on the internet. There's really no way to ask for a specific IP address unless your ISP offers you a range to choose from (which I HIGHLY doubt will ever happen). If you have a home network or something, you can set up internal IPs no problem. I've done that a number of times before.
  22. I've had that problem before but the browser NEVER worked while the IMs would always work, not just sometimes. I would contact your ISP. I'm sure it's something simple that they can help you with easily.
  23. If the speakers have shielded magnets, it's fine. You'll be able to tell by the distorted image on your monitor if magnets are near by.What annoys me is that you can't have any electronic motors anywhere near monitors (like fans, pencil sharpeners, etc) because they will make the picture jiggle. I don't know that it will damage the screen, but it sure is irritating!
  24. I have the MS media keyboard where you have volume controls, calculator, etc buttons on it. This new version also has secondary controls for the function keys. That's fine by the function keys are ALWAYS off by default which is an annoyance for me. It only requires me to press one key to turn it on but if I forget to do that and start pressing buttons, all sorts of programs start running and bad things start happening. How can I make them ON by default (like I have Num Lock on by default)?
