  1. Wow... Most of this passed over my head, but I have a strong feeling that this is exactly what I needed. I think I have to do some research on things that I don't understand in your post or maybe you can help me right here. The first thing I didn't undrestand was "Your modem is a proxy server and a DNS server". First of all I don't know what is a proxy server and what is a DNS server. And secondly, I don't undrestand how my modem can be those.. I was of the believe that a server is a full fledged computer.. I think when I get my grip on these concepts, the rest will become self explanatory. So please help me understand these.,...
  2. Well, thats really sad. Can you talk more about this rescure disk. Is it something that is officially made by microsoft or is it a facility given by the hardware manufacturer (compared to Dell DataSafe). My personal opinion is that all kinds of rescue disks should leave the extent of erasing to the user. In the case you described, that user would definitely have needed some external storage space to keep his data safe. And this concept irritates me. If my computer has a large hard drive, and I cannot keep my data safe on it then what is the pupose of having such large (in terms of storage space) hard drives.
  3. I have an invoice overdue. I have opened a support ticket. The xisto staff have always helped me and I hope this time would be no different...
  4. Yes @manu I know its good enough but I want to improve further. I would love to have a typing speed that touches the 100 wpm mark. So my goal is to reach 100 WPM mark. And I am not in any sort of data entry business. I just type for my website and the Xisto forum ( and its quite a bit of typing). So basically I want to reduce the time I give to typing without reducing the amount of words I type. And this can be only achieved through increased typing speed. So that's why I want to increase my typing speed further. Well I don't have much to do with numbers. I can't even type all of them without looking at the keyboard, and still I would be typing at about 60 WPM. This is because numbers has negligible share in the type of typing I commonly do. So I don't care much about numbers. However, I would like the typing speed for normal english typing to reach the 100 wpm mark. As of error, I do make them but they are not in a significant quantity to cause a considerable loss of typing speed and time. I would still like to be an error free typist but currently this comes as a secondary goal. The primary goal is to reach the 100 wpm mark.
  5. Well, surely most people will always forget the make and model of the individual hardware components of their computers. But the important thing is that with advanced operating systems like windows 7, you don't need to know the make and model of your hardware. The procedure of installing drivers for hardware components have become so automated that there is seldom any need to get to the depth of knowing the exact make and model of the hardware. I have never known the individual hardware components of my computer because I never needed to. The process of installation of drivers by using windows update has worked so seamlessly for me that there has never been the need of manually installing drivers for hardware. And obviously one only needs to know the make and model of individual hardware components when installing drivers for them manually. Secondly, for a clean install you don't have to wipe all data. I mean almost every user is meant to have some data stored on his computer. Some would have a huge collection of music, or movies. Others would have huge amount of documents and images. And the hard drive is meant to keep that data. In my opinion, it is a good thing that a clean install of windows doesn't need wiping off of all the partitions of the hard drive. It would have been brutal. Formatting only the partition which is meant to contain the operating system (mostly C:) and the fresh install of windows on that partition is equally effective as wiping off the whole hard drive with all its partitions. But this is only true when the data on other partitions is clean, inert and virus-free.
  6. I don’t know whether I have described the title correctly or not, but I am going to explain the problem in detail so everyone who reads this post would get an idea of what I am trying to do. The moderators are free to alter the title if they think the altered version will suit better. Scenario: To make you understand what I am trying to do, I need to describe the scenario first. There is a line (basically a telephone line which also has broadband capabilities) that is connected to a modem. The modem has many ports. One for “LINE IN” for the connection described earlier. Then there are 4 ports to which DSL cables can be attached (the other end of the cable is attached to a computer for internet use). The device also has built in wifi functionality so that a computer can directly connect via wifi without the need of the aforementioned DSL cable. And finally there are 3 to 4 computers connected to the device; some via cables and some via wifi. What I wish to do: The experiment I want to conduct is to put some controlling and monitoring force over the activities of the device. The idea in my mind is to find some way of passing all the incoming and outgoing traffic of the modem through a computer where all the controlling and monitoring can be done. This idea might sound simple but there are many problems associated with it. Plus I don’t know whether the passing of traffic through a computer is itself practical or not. Currently I can’t think of the method by which the computer would connect to the modem. My best guess is that I would need additional hardware for this purpose. With the current hardware (the mode, computer and cables) it just seems impossible. I say it seems impossible because the only way to connect the modem to the computer is by wifi or lan, both of which are output of the modem. So I can monitor the internet activity of the very computer which is currently connected but not of other computers which are connected by other wires. The goal is to control and monitor the activity of all computers. I would need guidance on the type of hardware required. My current assumption is that I would need a more advanced type of modem which has these capabilities. Furthermore, if I am to monitor the activities via a computer, I may need to dedicate a computer for this purpose. So I would definitely need some guidance on this. The modem itself has some features for controlling its activity. I would access it by giving the address 192.168.1.1 in a browser and then I can turn on off wifi and do some other things. But I need more control over the activity for example turning off individual output ports.etc. And there are no monitoring features available and I need to have some level of monitoring including which websites are viewed etc… Monitoring can be illegal sometimes and most people would frown upon it. But in my case, the connection is my personal internet connection and only I use it. This whole thing is just an experiment to help me understand how modems work and how to extend their functionality…. So don’t worry about this….. How this idea came into my mind: I have seen some internet connections where there is an added layer of security. They would require you to sometimes install an extra software and then provide the additional username and password to use the internet. I am not sure about this but a friend of mine told me that this is done via an additional computer which is dedicated to controlling and monitoring the internet activity of all the computers connected. It is usually found in universities and colleges. But I don’t have any practical experience of seeing such a system or even authentic information about how such systems work. So basically this whole post is based on a naïve idea derived from common talk. Any information or help is appreciated….
  7. I agree with what @yordan is saying. I have noticed this behaviour of full speed fan spinning when the computer first starts with all my laptops. On my older desktop, the fan always used to spin at the same speed, but I later found out that this was because the bios feature for controlling fan speed was turned off. So basically, I completely agree with yordan's explanation. The fan runs at full speed before the bios has booted up completely to control its speed. I would like you to make sure that the fan of your previous i3 pc could run faster. I am assuming that the fan had a slower maximum rpm and therefore you didn't notice any sound when you turned on that pc because the fan (because of its slower maximum rpm). If you ever noticed your fan running faster than that, then my assumption would be completely wrong.
  8. Very detailed information really, but somehow I feel that most of it is either not necessary or not used much in common practice or may its just because of the way I am used to using my computer. The common practice for me (and most likely for most of the people) is that the hard drive has many partitoins (for me its 3: C, D and E). The operating system is installed in C. The installation directories of other software are also placed in C. So basically C is the partition containing the Operating system and other commonly used software. D and E on the other hand are more like backup and storage drives. All of my music, movies, picutres etc are here (And I think that it is a common practive nowadays). Furthermore, other necessary files that I need on my hard drive on permenant basis, like documents, my website related stuff, ebooks, and backups of software setups etc are also on these partitions. I even go a step further by changing the settings of my office applicaitons, download managers, photo editors so that the default location for saving files is not in C but in either D or E. This way, I am sure that I don't have anything on C that I need on permenant basis. So what I am really trying to say is that most people are used to stroring their files in such a way. And with the advancement in cloud computing technologies, the overall thing has gone a step further. So problems like losing files is becoming less and less common. Especially when the problem is operating system failure... I would like to mention here that hard drive failure still poses a huge threat to losing important data. So if someone stores files on his computer in a way described above (with I assume that a lot of people do), they don't need to worry much when going for a fresh install of the operating system. They just need to quickly go through common places like Desktop, Downloads (the default donload location of windows is in C), and Documents (the default location to save documents is also in C) and check for any files that they might need in the future. Just copy the files to D or E etc. After that you can directly go to reinstalling the Operating system from the DVD and skip steps like listing hardware components, backing up passwords, backing up bookmarks etc. (I will exlain below). So during installation of the operating system (let us assume windows 7), you just need to make sure that only C is formatted (not D or E). It is always good to install the fresh operating system on a formatted partition. You need to know that formatting the whole hard drive is not necessary. Only the partition on which the operating system is going to be isntalled needs to be formatted. So just format C and carry on with installation. After the operating system is installed, you need to do a few things to make your computer work at its full potential. First of all, you would notice that some hardware components are not working properly. This is because their drivers are not properly installed by default. So you need to install the drivers. However, unlike previous versions of windows, installing drivers in windows 7 is as easy as anything. You don't need to have a backup of drivers, You don't need to find the correct drivers. Infact, you don't even need to know which drivers need to be isntalled. All you have to do is update your windows 7 installaiton via its built in update application. The update application, alongside the updates for the operating system itselft, finds the updates for drivers, and if any driver is missing or needs updating, it would be directly installed with just a single click of the mouse. This method has always worked for me and I think would work with most people using commonly used hardware. Once your computer is running at its full potential, you need to install the software that you use to do your work. In my case I have setups of big software applications like office copied to D. I install it directly from there. For smaller applications like adobe reader, firefox, etc, I like to download the latest version directly from interent (because it doesn't take much time). So in this way, the computer would up and running better than before in just a couple of hours. I mentioned above that you don't need to backup your passwords or bookmarks etc because the applicaitons of today have online backing features for such things. For example firefox has builtin feature to backup all the bookmarks online so that you don't loose any even if you wipe your hard drive completely (ping: they are not on your hard drive;P) Same goes for passwords because applications (or plugins) like lastpass will automatically create an online backup on their own servers and you don't need to worry about losing them.. So I think that the overall process in not difficult at all if correct methods are applied.....
  9. Maybe you can create a backup (by using the windows own backup tool) of the system partition and then restore the backup on the new hard drive of yours.....But that's a theory as I have never tried it myself....
  10. I have used this device with linux mint 14. The extra buttons worked almost similar to what they function in windows.I haven't checked the report for device make/manufacturer.... In fact I don't know how to check this in linux .... some help in this regard would be appreciated.
  11. The basics you described, I seem to know them all. Practically I follow all of them except the two flaws mentioned in the first post. I also think that the pressing of spacebar is not exactly like you mentioned. I seem to use the right thumb all the time… so this is the third flaw. The remaining things, you mentioned are exactly like what I do normally when I type. So the remaining things won’t be a problem. My main concern here is that how much improvement I will get after investing a considerable amount of time in correcting these three flaws in my typing. For the spacebar and the B key, I don’t think there would be much improvement. But I am sure that there can be improvement in the typing speed when I correct the Shift key flaw. As far as exercise goes, I do typing daily. The average would be 1000 to 1500 words daily and I think that it is enough exercise. And as I said above, the finger position on the keys is correct for most part except the three flaws mentioned. So this shouldn’t be a problem as well. The only other improvement I can think of right now is the reduction in the lifting of fingers while I type. So that I instead of hammering the keys, I press them gently. The science behind that would be that the decreased lift would result in less time taken for each keystroke, which in principle should increase the typing speed. A good typing game should be fun. Nowadays, I sit in front of my computer for relatively less time, and most of this time is spent in typing. So occasionally, I will get bored of typing in a boring plain text editor. So during this time, a typing game would do very well for me. I occasionally use typeracer.com, and its quite fun to use. Wow…. That’s some comment @MC. I have always heard that touch typing is better than almost every other form of typing. But what you say seems strange to me… Well, 100 wpm is the ultimate goal for me (most likely). The reason is that I am not a professional typist and my job doesn’t require to me type fast (actually it doesn’t require me to type at all). Its just the additional work I do with my website and on the internet that require me to type. And above all, I like to type fast…. It so cooool… So for me 100 wpm would do very good. And it would be ideal for me if I achieve this without investing huge amount of time into it, which probably means that I should stick to qwerty and touch typing. Well, I didn’t understand most of what you have said but it appears that you are a pretty good guitarist… wooooo… It appears to be pretty awesome, but do you have to look at the keyboard while you type?..... I tried once to switch to DVORAK style, because I was told that the shift is not that hard to make and that the reward is worth the little trouble. I changed the layout of the keys of one of my usb keyboards to the DVORAK style and I gave it a try. However, I was very disappointed with my progress. It was very frustrating because I always used to press keys as if the layout was QWERTY. So it became clear quickly that the shift would require quite a long period of trouble and hard work, so I gave it up and decided to stick with qwerty.
  12. Ok so I downloaded the software.. then installed it but nothing happened. When I run the software, it says no device found. So the first thing that comes into my mind is that the software that I installed (Logitech gaming software) doesn't include a driver with it. So next thing I need to do is to find the driver and install it.... @manu, can you please help me finding the driver for logitech gaming mouse. And if the Logitech gaming software does include the driver then it is obvious that my mouse doesn't work with it and I will have to look for something else. So again I seek help from you folks...
  13. Logitech gaming software download in progress.......... Hope it goes straightforward......
  14. First of all, I didn't know where to put this topic, so @yordan if you feel that this is the wrong place, please feel free to move it to what seems correct place to you..So the thing is that I have been touch typing for quite some time. Before starting to learn touch typing, I used "hunt and peck" style and I was OK with that (around 25 WPM).. After I learned touch typing, my speed was increasing at a constant rate with time. It did take time to reach 30 wpm but after that my muscles got used to the location of the keys and the speed improvement was fast. But after I hit the 60 WPM mark (many months back), the speed improvement just ceased to happen and I am stuck at 60 WPM. Actually the improvement from 50 WPM to 60 WPM had bigger share of reduction of errors as compared to actual speed improvement. So I might be correct in saying that somehow, my fingers have ceased to improve the speed of their movement.I know that 60 WPM is not bad. Actually it is quite good especially in my field (medicine and surgery) where computer literacy is not that high. But I want to improve the speed. My goal is to touch the 100 wpm mark.I did some research on google to find out what is the average typing speed. It turned out to be between 40 and 50. So 60 wpm is above average but I know that 100 wpm is quite achievable. My assumption is that there must be something that I am doing wrong, because of which the speed improvement has ceased to happen. I tried to find out the flaws in my typing and so far I have found two...The first flaw in my typing is the lack of use of SHIFT key of the right side. Whenever I need to type capital letters, I would only press the shift key of left side. Even when I have to type alphabets that are typed with left hand like a, e, z, q. What I do is I press the left shift key with my left little finger and then press the alphabets (of the left side) with other fingers of the left hand. I am so used to this approach that the accuracy rate is more than 90 percent even with this bizarre method. But what I know for certain is that it reduces my typing speed. The second flaw in my typing is pressing B key with right index finger instead of left. This might be a cause of trouble in some select situations but I don’t even feel that I am typing wrong, and maybe this flaw can be overlooked. So what do you folks thing I need to do (in addition to correcting the above mentioned flaws) to increase my typing speed upto 100 WPM.
  15. Ok, so if there aren't any emulators then I think I would have to follow @MC's advice and try the drivers of other more commonly known gaming mice. Lets see what happens....
  16. With my current style of typing, I don't thing touch screen like keyboard would be completely silence either. I hammer the keys quite hard so even the glass of the screen would produce some tapping sound....But that would be the case when there is a full sized keyboard where I can use all my fingers. On smaller virtual keyboards (like in smartphones), the thumbing (typing by only using the thumbs) doesn't produce any sound. But the speed is not even comparabale to what I achieve on normal keyboards.
  17. Before I try drivers of the more commonly known gaming mice, there is one idea that is coming to my mind....As I have posted sometime in the past, somewhere in the forum, I use lots of low quality generic gamepads for gaming. Sometimes, these gamepads won't work properly with a game i.e. some of the buttons would work and some won't. One easy fix for this is the emulator for xbox 360 controller. When I setup this emulator with my gamepad, everything works fine and every button behaves as if I am using an xbox 360 controller. So are there any emulators available for gaming mice. Something like microsft gaming mouse emulator or logitech gaming mouse emulator....Has anyone heard of anything like that.....?
  18. I would love to silence the keyboard completely, but that is very difficult to do practically. This new apple style keyboard has done a great job in noise reduction. Instead of the heave "thak thak" of the old keyboard, the noise now produced is feeble "click click", which is much more bearable. The overall intensity of the noise has also decreased significantly. So ultimately, this keyboard would do fine for me unless I find another solution that would decrease the noise even further.I think after changing the keyboard, the next thing I should work on now is my typing style. I would soon post a topic about my typing speed not increasing further than 60 WPM and I strongly feel that it is because of my typing style. So by changing my typing style, I would get two benefits: first the noise will be reduced and second, my speed would cross 60 WPM mark. One thing that I want to mention here is that this new keyboard has somehow made me reduce the force on my fingers. I mean, I am pressing the keys more gently now. Maybe its because of the lessened key travel or something else but I certainly feel that I am pressing the keys more gently now. I just need to practice on decreasing the lift of my fingers while typing, so that instead of hammering the keys from far above, I just press them while moving swiftly around the keyboard.hope this goes easy for me....
  19. There is an update..... I have got my hands on a wireless keyboard (a copy of the apple wirelss keyboard). This one has a shallow key travel and produces significantly less noise as compared to my current keyboard. However, for some unknown reason, the frequency of typing errors increases tremendously, and the typing speed reduced considerably when I use this keyboard. Maybe its because my current keyboard (the one which I have got used to) has a rather strange layout of keys (as compared to other normal keyboards). But I have to say that the frequency of typing errors is significantly less with this this strangel layout. Anyhow, I have decided to give this wireless keyboard some time and see whether I can make the typing speed and error frequency similar to what they are with the current keyboard.
  20. Its nice to hear from you again @MC So if the only option for me is x-mouse-button, I will need to assess a few things before investing my time into the software... The first of these things would be to make sure that it recognizes all of the extra buttons (which it is not currently doing). There are a total fo 6 extra buttons (as compared to a normal mouse) out of which it is recognizing only two (named it button 4 and button 5 i think.... can't be sure because I have previously uninstalled the software and haven't resintalled it). The other four buttons are not recognized at all, so assigning custom combinations to them is currently out fo the question. The other thing is that it should have the ability of creating key combinations of user's choice. In the available list of actions that can be assigned to a button, some important things were missing like "select all" (which I do use alot and would love to have a button for it on my mouse).. If the software can be made to cover these things, then I am ready to invest my time into configuring it and setting it up.... But I would like to mention again that I am not a technical expert so I will need a lot of help....... (and this would consume a lot of my time).. Ok so the first question that came into my mind after reading your post is that how do I find whether this mouse is a badged up version of some other mouse. Is there some kind of code on the hardware itself or I will have to contact the manufacturer...... tell me @manu....
  21. What do you exactly mean by references ???And please do tell me how would I know the references of the device....
  22. I know I ask a lot of questions.... (@yordan).... but I like asking questions more than answering them so please bear with me..... So I have this gaming mouse that has 6 extra buttons than a traditional mouse. Its made by a local company and its known by the name Dany challenger g6000 gaming mouse (link). I do play games but not those FPSs that would require a sophisticated gaming mouse. The main purpose of buying this mouse was so that i can configure the extra keys for my normal activities in the windows. To be more specific, I wanted the extra buttons to work for functions like cut, copy, paste, forward, back etc. Unlike the more expensive gaming mice, this mouse doesn't have its own software to configure the extra keys for custom functions. And by default the buttons work for some strange (and useless) things that i never need. For instance of the two buttons that are meant to be pressed by the thumb, the front one works for opening the homepage. So if I am working on this Xisto post, and press this button, it would instantly take me to the home page of the browser. This is quite useless (and possibly damaging too). The button behind the describe button does some strange thing that I don't exactly understand. When I click it, it would select the entire line of text, and sometimes the entire paragraph so I think that it works like double click or probably triple click. On the top surface of the mouse are 4 buttons. One of these is the DPI button that changes the dpi mode of the mouse. This one works just fine. However the other three don't. You can see those buttons in the picture on the link provided above. So what I would like to do is know about some solution that would make it possible for me to configure these extra buttons for custom functions of my liking. I googled the issue, and the first result was about the software "x-mouse button control". It appeared to be the exact thing that I was looking for so I went on to download the software and then intalled it. But the UI was rather strange and I couldn't understand it enough to configure the mouse buttons. Moreover, it didn't recognize all the mouse buttons so eventually, I ended up uninstalling the software immediately. So a software which I can use to configure the extra buttons of my mouse for custom functions of my likings with do for me....... Anybody........!
  23. It is not the amount of typing I do that cause the problem... Actually it is the timing of my work. So when the other person in my room is asleep, even if i type as little as 200 words, I would have caused enough noise to wake him up... and that is what I don't want to do and that is why all these ideas and all this research is going on....
  24. The picture was really illustrative @yordan. And I am assuming that it is the posture that should be maintained while typing. My current setup is a bit differet from the one shown in the picture. When I sit on my chair, the feet do firmly touch the ground so this part is ok. However, even when I am sitting straight, as the character in the picture, the angle between the forearm and the arm is not 90 degrees (in contrast to the angle shown in the picture). And most likely this is the main reason why I can't put the weight of my wrists on the table. So the big qestion for me is that why the angle between the forearm and the arm in my case is not 90 degrees. Most of the times, I may not be sitting straight as the character in the picture but even when i do sit straight, the angle is not 90 degrees.Comparing the distance between the legs and the table shown in this picture with my case, I can surely say that the height of the table should also be not a problem. So there are only two things left that could cause the problem..First is my sitting posture and the second is that the chair probably is too deep (in terms that my when my back is in touch with the back of the chair, the horizontal distance between my belly and the near end of the table is greater than what is shown in this picutre. So eventually, to a reach out for the keyboard, I have to extend my arms)I will try to look out further into the problem....
  25. When the keyboard is on the table, I have tried to keep my wrist firmly on the table. However, when I try to keep the weight of the wrist on the table, I can’t type as fast as I normally do. And when I try to type faster (while I am focusing on the content), the wrists get elevated automatically. Maybe it is because I haven’t practiced much with this setup. When the keyboard is on the table, the angle between the forearm and the arm becomes nearly 0 degrees (somewhere between 0 and 20 to be exact). On the other hand, when the keyboard is on my legs, the angle between the forearm and the arm is nearly 90 degrees. I think this is the main factor why I can’t keep my wrists on the table but I can keep them on my legs. So eventually, I will have to say that the height of the keyboard is not very natural for me…. Or if it is the correct height, I am not used to it. One thing that I want to share here is that I don’t get much tired with typing. Although I seldom type more than 1000-1500 words at a time, but I never felt the tiredness (this is after I became fluent with touch typing). Maybe when I type longer documents, the tiredness will become apparent but for now it is not an issue for me. In fact, I have tried such software. The name was “Dragon Naturally speaking” by nuance. I lent it from a friend to test it (I hope that’s not illegal). But I was never satisfied with it. The primary issue was that the accuracy was not very good. Maybe its because I am not a native English speaker and the accent is strange so the software has a hard time understanding it. But the thing that matters the most is “it didn’t work well for me”. At that time, the main purpose was to see if I can write documents faster this way as compared to typing with keyboard. And because of the errors, the time taken was much more than typing with keyboard. So I decided not to go for it.However, in the scenario of “keyboard noise reduction”, the software would certainly eliminate the noise of the keyboard completely, but on the other side, it would add the noise of speaking. And the ultimate goal of “silence” would not be achieved. So I don’t think it’s a good think for noise reduction because you have to speak to it (quite loudly) and this would never help with noise reduction. Ha ha ha…. That’s funny but true. In fact, some strange text might appear because I would be told “shut up, I am sleeping” in the local language, and there is no way the software would recognize it………………
