No Sound? Drivers are installed

I recently installed SuSE Enterprise Desktop 10 this morning and it's working alright. DNS requests are a little slow to my DNS server but that's alright with me. Anyways, I had Fedora Core 6 installed beforehand and I really prefer SuSE and FC6 had sound but SuSE does NOT. I've checked some settings and it does reconize my onboard sound. I've adjusted the system volume several times as well and no luck.Any ideas? Thanks![N]F

Have you checked your ALSA settings? Make sure that aRts is configured to run on ALSA. Also, make sure that nothing is muted.xboxrulz

Hmm... I don't think anything is muted... I'll check again. Maybe I'll also try some things under GNOME (I'm currently under KDE).

 

So far this is my only Linux system that has worked perfectly (not counting FC6 where almost everything worked).

Ok, good news! I have sound, but now other things are acting weird... like my screen saver kicks in every 20 or so idle seconds and you know that signature bar right under my registered Linux user certificate? Sometimes it appears to go "hyper cycle" and just switches very fast.Well, it's Linux so there's got to be a hack for it somewhere! Any ideas?[N]F

Yeah, SuSE was acting all weird so now I'm back at FC6. I've used FC a lot longer than I have SuSE so I'm happy at where my computer is at now. I'm excited to see what FC7 brings to the world of Linux!

This would be a nice reference for people asking "which Linux do you prefer?" and having "you should use Suze" as answer.My experience with FC6 was rather bad, on a machine where Mandriva 2007 ran fast and agreeable.So, maybe you should try every available Linux distro until you find the one whose defaultdrivers match all your physical devices.RegardsYordan

Well, sorta off topic, but lets look at it from reality. You just have to find a distro that works and you like. SuSE is like the Vista of Linux. Yeah, it's got eye candy, but it gets rather annoying after you use it for a while. I've used Fedora the longest so it's the most I feel "at home" with. Honestly, I was having trouble getting WINE installed on SuSE (and failed) but I had it installed in two seconds on Fedora. SuSE had a built in Citrix client, I had to do some hacking to get the Citrix ICA client installed (which I need for school). I've tried a bunch of Linux distros (Ubuntu, Kubuntu, MEPIS, SuSE, CentOS, Debian, and a few others) but I'm not a big fan of some of those distros (which even had all the drivers I needed). MEPIS I absolutely hate and will never use again, Debian required a lot of hacking to finally get satisfactory. So, I've stuck with Fedora Core. I had a web server on my network operating Fedora and I figured I might as well give it another shot, except use it full time. You just have to find your niche and stick with it.
