Win Xp: Set Permissions On Files Or Folders

Set permissions on files or folders (Windows XP, Windows 2000)

 

To set permissions on individual files and on folders, you must use NTFS file system.

NTFS file system provides features such as: Encrypt files, Compress a file or folder, Disk quotas and Set permissions on files or folders.

To convert a drive (for example drive C) to NTFS go to command prompt and type>> convert C: /fs:ntfs

Note that you cannot simply convert it back to FAT or FAT32.

OK, enough

1-By default, Windows does not display Security tab in files or folders Properties. To enable this feature go to Folder Options and clear “Use Simple File Sharing” check box in view tab.

2- Right click on your file or folder and click Properties, click Security tab and set permissions. For additional permissions or inheritance information click on Advanced.

As usual, another great tip soleimanian. I have the same question as I had for another one of your tips. Does this apply to Windows XP Home also (or just Pro)? I'm not in front of my computer right now since I'm out of the country.

Hey thanks for the tip, This was one thing that I had never really thought about in windows. Sure in unix/linux you are almost constantly working with permissions and the same is true when uploading websites. Most of the time I handle all my permissions on the files after they have been uploaded via ftp, but this can often take considerable time when you are dealing with lots of files. I'm sure that I will be using this security tab a lot. Thanks again.

Somewhere microsoft thought the confusing mess of permissions and user account paradigms and security levels was less complicated than POSIX spec permissions...LOL

Vista XP File Sharing Permission issuesWin Xp: Set Permissions On Files Or FoldersThank you, this was the exact problem I was having. I spent 2 hours trying to figure out how to get my External USB Drive I was using on an XP machine to let me modify mp3 files in iTunes (get info was grayed out). I finally added that Vista profile to the USB drive, but the blog I read told me to remove the other Users. So, when I went back to the XP machine, I got an Access Denied error. I followed your steps and added my XP profile back to the USB Drive. All good now. Thanks!-reply by Jason

I would like to know if it is possible to “arrange” files and folders in “My Documents” and/or “Favorites” to a vertical alphabetized order? I find it faster and easier on my eyes, as there are several “rows” compared to only a few “columns”. I am very familiar with the other standard options offered by “right clicking” and choosing from the options on the drop down menu. I would rather find a way to make the files and folders “line up” vertically. Please help me if you can, I have searched allot and could not find any post or even anything regarding this matter. I am not even sure if I googled the right words as it is hard to find words that would only represent my inquiry. After many years using my PC this is actually the first time I have used a “forum?” to ask a question. Thank you very much in advance.
