Configuring Music Controls For Microsoft Multi Media KeyboardMicrosoft media keyboard -- F keys on by default?

I am unable to use my music buttons at the very top of my Microsoft MultiMedia keyboard unless I have itunes open. How can I use these buttons when I don't have itunes open (like its minimized but music is playing). Also my "My Documents" and "My Pictuers" buttons don't do anything.
