In the past I used PHBB and successfully created one skin, but it was a very harsh thing to do and took a long time, I had to edit many files. I am thinking about using Simple Machine Forums (SMF) as my next forum platform (I'm only interested in free forum platforms at the moment though I have heard great stories of v Bulletin). Is it difficult to create skins, or layouts for this Forum Platform? If any one has any experience please share, I would love to learn a little about what I may need to know soon since I will probably have to create my own custom layout. Also, if anyone knows, what kind of mods can you get for SMF thus fas, I have heard it is pretty new, so I;m not expecting much, but does it at least have a shout box, and also, how do you incorporate ads in the forum. I know a lot of people who run very successful forums using these services. A lot of people don't even have websites but still manage to run a successful forum. Generally the admins don't even want to move from the service even when they get to >100,000 posts, they are happy all server management is done for them and the costs involved in running a large forum are handled by the main forum hosting company. You can easily implement and integrate a shoutbox into the forum system. An example of a shoutbox system would be Shoutmix, although it not really a phpBB mod but can be integrated into the forum.
