Windows Login

Recommended Posts

At home I'm running a Windows network where clients login via the login box where you select the domain. For some reason, logging in on my computer takes 1 minute and 14 seconds (I timed it) but my laptop will take 8 seconds, and the server itself is 3 seconds. Normally, when you first login, the computer has to create the local profile (I gave up on roaming profiles, seeing if that was causing the slow down) so there is slight delay, but 1:14 to login is just absurd. Especially since my computer and the server are basically on the same switch!Any ideas? I thought it may have to do with some setting with active directory, but I didn't find anything.Oh, the operating system is Windows Server 2003.[N]F

This usually happens because you are logging into a network. My laptop takes a few secopnds, but on a network you have tyo load lotts of more programs and files, and they ahve to set features to remember who you are and to save your files under your name.It should takes from 20 seconds to 60 seconds on a network to log on, and on a laptop, from 1 second to 20 seconds.

odd, on Windows Server 2003, my login time is about 8 seconds. On Windows XP is around 1 minute, on Windows 2000 is about 20 - 30 sec. on Linux is about 10 seconds.

It could be a server issue or the individual computer. though I don't think a dual core 2GHz CPU should slow down too much! :)

What you might try is making Windows to show more advanced information when it's logging you in. It'll show you thing like 'playing the logon sound' and stuff. But I have no idea how to turn it on, I enabled it using nLite and that would require you to reinstall windows.Other things you can do is checking what software shouldn't be starting up automaticly and see if there's anything in the windows log.

i know that windows98se or equivalent takes no time at all to load up and shut down, but microsoft arent supporting them anymore, pity they didnt fix the bugs where the start bar doesnt come back after a crash or where explorer keeps freezing, but then im stuck on it because of the IQRL_NOT_LESS_OR_EQUAL error kept coming up on wix2k and xp sp2, and then more frequently, and then i couldnt even load windows so i had to format and start again on win98se.Win2k doesnt take a lot of time to load up either.
