The Descent - Spoiler Free Review

Recommended Posts

I'll start off by saying this movie single handedly restored my faith in modern horror movies. Not gore flicks, not thrillers, not shock scare flicks, but actual honest to God horror movies. The movie starts off in usual horror fashion with some background on about 50% of the main cast, leaving just enough info that you feel connected with the characters but enough extra characters that could hypothetically go against your assumptions later on.Within about 5 minutes of starting up there is a shocker... kind of over the top, had me worried, but actually worked itno the plotline significantly so that was ok. Then it returns to plot and a while later managed one of the few random scares I was proud to witness haha. Usually if a horror movie just throws stuff at the screen to scare the audience it annoys me, this one was artistically done and as such I didn't mind it at all.Once the girls actually begin the descent (physical) into the caves the movie manages types of fear I'm not used to experiencing from a movie. The angles and lighting and damned fine acting and expression of fear from the actors made me actually feel claustrophobic in a few scenes and that was a delight for me.Once the poo hits the fan (as it oft does in horror films) and they begin their interactions with the creatures you see in the previews it keeps the tension high and still offers a few jumpy parts. One part that is actually in the previews manages to pull off a blair witch feeling (but good) and still caught me off guard completely when executed on screen. Finally, the emotional/psychological descent of the characters as they go from cultured humans to animals needing to survive is well portrayed. It was neither a light switch type on/off thing nor was it a drawn out, over done escapade. It really seemed logical whn each character snapped into survival mode.My ONLY gripe about the movie is the ending, because I've been informed of what the original brit version was like and I would have preferred it over the wuss-out (okokok, still pretty intense but less so) ending for us North Americans. But then again, 99.995% of horror movies have horrible endings. All in all the movie hits on almost every aspect of horror films and does them all properly. It manages to pull things off I didn't know they could do (claustrophobia properly) and still have a decent storyline. Another great fact is that there are multiple things for the main characters to be scared of. The movie isn't about them vs the creatures, its about them vs multiple dangers from multiple sources.I give this movie top grades. If you like horror movies at all you NEED to see this flick, if possible in theatres. If not, at 3am in the pitch dark. Alone. In closing... a 20+ year old girl cried during this movie. Sure she was a screamer so it's not unexpected, but it still felt right. I haven't seen someone scared into tears in a long time, and it seemed fitting this movie did it.
