I've used download.com for years. I stopped for a while because some of their downloads contained adware (they used to let us download KaZaA, for example) but went back when I got this system a few months ago and found that they're advertising themselves as adware-free.

This is nice. Considering that they have a massive selection of anti-spyware/adware programs for download *grins*

Download.com is basically the first place I go to look for freeware (though they also have lots of share/trialware). Even if I know what I want to try (specific program) I usually go here because at least I can look at other users' reviews and opinoins before I actually grab and install the programs.

http://www.snapfiles.com/freeware/

http://www.pricelesswarehome.org/ - The site where the users and followers of alt.comp.freeware on Usenet vote for each year's best freeware.

http://www.tucows.com/ used to be good but I can't really say what it's like now.

http://www.nonags.com/ is also a good place to search for freeware.

http://forums.xisto.com/no_longer_exists/ has a new cleaner look which helps searching thru their neatly organized site.

If you need to search for particular freeware, I suggest you have a look at the Freeware SearchParty

what kind fo freeware...? are you into like the product, or are you okay with trial version :D that sounds lame. if you're looking for like art and graphic freeware, i'd definitely go for GIMP. usually i google it..."(what software you're searching for)" + "free download" a lot will come up as trial versions, but there'll be some freeware

http://www.snapfiles.com/ isn't bad. It's got shareware and commercial too, but they've got category filtering. You should really be more specific with this type ofpost though. Do you mean game design, graphics, audio, games, what? There are many that specialize in specific categories and are better than those that don't, so it's help you alot if you gave some examples of what you need.

SoftPedia.com has a lot of good reviews although I find it hard to believe their "No-Spyware" rating system. Worth a check though, since they really have their categories organized.

A really good freeware site is at Dixlinx.Com of the software here is safe and the owner writes some pretty decent reviews.
