Hey there Darkool, this is some intereating news. The planet is covered with electrical wiring and it would enable a whole bunch of computers to get online if something like this got off the ground. WiMAX all set to roll out early next year, with average speeds of upto 1mbps, so that would really nullify the need to be wired at any location what soever. Especially since the developers of WiMAX are considing setting up their network alongside exsisting cellular networks. WiMAX is a lot like WiFi, except that the speed of transmission is a lot faster and the coverage area for one base is around a 10 km radius.

Do post a link to any article you may have come across on the Matsushita Electronics announcement. Would really like to read through it.

Oke, this sounds very nice, but i think this is gonna be pricy. Electric internet, then there has to be elektricity all the time....And what is the point off that speed, so you can download a movie in 5 minutes? Then some1 has to have such an upload and that would be very expensive too. And ofcourse, if everybody uses this, it would be very nice for the enviroment, wouldn't it? So, it's a nice invention, but think about the negative points too.

This is incredible news, i didnt think the internet could be acievable through any medium besides the phone line or basically air waves for wireless. now that i think about it i can see how this can be possible and especially the speed of 170 mbps is brilliant and i cant wait till i here the news that they have broken throught the electron speed barrier, then i think downloads of about 1 gig would be less than 10 seconds......amazing technology

Well, maybe not that fast yet ... but this technique already exists and you can buy it if you want to:

The problem with 'electric' internet is that you've really got to take care about keeping your network in your own flat, otherwise your neighbours will be able to access your data.

Wow. That's sincerely sweet news, man. I can't wait to see where they go with this and what becomes of it. Just think: anywhere that there's electricity, there's a high-speed Internet connection. That would blow my mother's mind - she lives in the middle of nowhere and can only get dial-up. I feel for her.

This is old news actually. They had made it for lan networks too. And it works fast but mainly it depends on quality of electric installations. And if you have many devices installed, like TV, freezer, device for hot water in bathroom (I cant remeber the right word... ) and such, all that devices are causing interferentions, now imagine, how much interferetions is that...! This thing "electric" internet will probably be used only by large telephone companies in conjuction with electric power-line companies for low-cost connecting to distant areas without need to use telephone lines, only power-lines...

I took a networking course last semester, and he was talking about "piggy-backing" off of electric lines. I assume that further enhancements have been made. The 10 mb/s must have been what he was talking about. Still, I'm sorta in the same situation. I could probably get cable, because they've recently extended their access area close to where I live. Amazing how many people could have broadband.

Technical term for this is broadband over Powerlines or (BPL). Generally many think this is a bad idea because the frequancy used would effectively jam amatur radio opeators and several police/emergancy bands (in the United States). In an emergancy, this could cause problems because Ham radio operators in the past have proven to be the only reliable communications out of disaster areas such as after earthquakes, terrorist attacks, and even hurriacanes.
