jcguy 0 Report post Posted September 9, 2005 I jsut went throught PC magazine today and i found out that you can actually create a database using Microsoft Access and Excel. And computers and servers online can actually use these databases and conduct queries with them. I've always though of databases as MYSQL, Microsoft SQL server and so on. So it is possible to store data to a Microsoft Access database and manipulate it online?

yordan 10 Report post Posted September 9, 2005 @jcguy : you are right, it's possible to use Microsoft access, having the data on a remote database : mysql database if you have a small Unix computer, or an oracle database if you have a huge AIX computer with undreds of terabytes data. Access has it's own settings where you explain that the data are not local to your computer, but are hosted by a remote database. Of course it has to be correctly installed and configured (strangely, Microsoft things work well when linked to Microsoft other things, and need a lot of administration if linked to things like Oracle or Informix or even mysql).Unfortunately, I did not use access that way, I am more familiar with Oracle, but I have seen people using that kind of bridges for demonstrating purposes.Regards Yordan
thedevil 0 Report post Posted September 13, 2005 Yes you can use mysql database on the server as well. The fact is most of the small asp based site use ms access single file based database that is ms access. You need to have a server that has the microsoft's jet (ADODB) to do such things. These are simple to connect. Though I hardly use the msaccess database and hardly use asp so i am afraid i could not give the detail implementation on that. but it is for sure it can be used. But about excel i never knew it, rather i have used it as a CSV file.that is it i ever knew
