Water Melon 0 Report post Posted July 10, 2005 I'm starting to build a new PC, and i decided that the OS i'll be using is a type of Linux. I was wondering which would be the best for Gaming/Music. I'm new to linux, this will be the second time ive used it. I have MEPIS on my laptop, but i don't use that all too often.
Giniu 0 Report post Posted July 10, 2005 If you want use Linux for games (I belive new games) you should try linux with good optimisation to get best results... I've heard that gentoo would be good in this situation. Also you can try Linux From Scratch but then you would need to spare a lot of time building it by hand, but you would get ultra-fast, very-small and well-organized system which would be made specialy for your hardware. hatim 0 Report post Posted July 10, 2005 I am a gamer and a gentoo user for about 2 years. I would not recomend Linux to you at all if you are a seriious gamer. I know its sad but true. I am unable to play most of my fav games. and almost any new title. Although You can buy Cedga from Transgaming Technologies (a special emulation tool tuned for games) But its better to just use the OS for which the game was built . (ie Win32) The only game I play these days is UT2004 that too cause it has a native Linux Binary (which atleast comes with the DVD)Gentoo is a sweet distro but will take up time for instllation etc. If you are a total Noob i would suggest u go with Ubuntu (you may like to wait for a month to try their latest release which will make installation easier)Fedora is good too but sux at multimedia..i mean atleast the default instlattionSuSe is an awsmoe distro (has very less hardware issues)In my opnion I have yet to find a single major distro which comes out of the box and gives the best gaming experience ..you always have to do the tweaking .perhaps thats the beauty of Linux . There is always room for improvement. You may also want to check distrowatch and search for special distros targetted for Gaming. Conclusion : Ubuntu if you can wait ..otherwise get SuSe Free version
xboxrulz1405241485 0 Report post Posted July 13, 2005 Gentoo is not for newbies; while SuSE is. I don't suggest Ubuntu for gamers since it sucks on gamer PCs w/ 1280*1024 resolution at least. The best distro I've ever used is SuSE Linux.xboxrulz
Quatrux 4 Report post Posted July 13, 2005 well for me best is Gentoo, because after the long installation you can understand how linux work, I vote for it because i use it myself, it is much faster when you compile it for your cpu and you can use whatever you want Gnome, KDE and etc. in my opinion the step by step installation tutorial is understandable for anyone with good english and a little bit of knowledge, but I agree that people used to windows won't like the installation process and not to suitable for beginners
madcrow 0 Report post Posted July 13, 2005 SuSE Linux is generally pretty good, but if you have an NVidia card, it can be a pain in the *bottom* to get 3D support working.
