Cookiemonster1405241499 0 Report post Posted June 10, 2005 (edited) Could i run Linux operating system on my server and have my other 2 computers running on windows xp professional, as i have heard that it can be a right pain in the groin to network together. So would it be alright to do this or will it stop my internet. Edited June 10, 2005 by microscopic^earthling (see edit history)
miCRoSCoPiC^eaRthLinG 0 Report post Posted June 10, 2005 Yup this is very much possible - your linux server can run a wide variety of services like FTP/WWW/Mail etc painlessly - while you windows systems can avail these services over the LAN.. now if your Linux server's also connected to your modem-router (assuming that u've got an ADSL link) then you can offer these services to the outside world too ... You can do some really cool stuff with such a configuration..Regards,m^e
Trekkie101 0 Report post Posted June 11, 2005 Yeah ive got that type of setup at home, two internal Windows Boxes and one linux server sort of box, although its not too friendly with mail handling, but ill get there one day.
miCRoSCoPiC^eaRthLinG 0 Report post Posted June 11, 2005 Mail handling's a different story bro - nothing as powerful as linux when it comes to it - but as always, it needs a good bit of configuring... Lemme know if you need any help on it I'm experimenting with it myself at this point and have picked up a good lot.
hatim 0 Report post Posted June 17, 2005 FreeBSD is a good choice too for this kind of setup. I have been told by new bies that they found FreeBSD documentation to be better and hence the job was done easily.
