HTTP Servers Whats your favorite?

Ugh....After hours of looking through servers to install on my comp to run a personal/test site I haven't found one that fits all my needs.The list so far is:ApacheIISOmnihttpdXitamiNetscapeThe one I've come to love the most is omnihttpd....But I kept getting a error when I tried to run cgi-php scriptsThe error was: Something enable redirect-cgi-phpOr something like that...So yeah. Hey spacewaste,

 

I usually use Apache, but with this problem, I think when you compile PHP, you must use --enabled-force-cgi-redirect, that's the only thing I can think of right now which could be your problem.

i m using windows os.

as far as i've tested, i think apache is the best!.
firstly, apache was designed to be a perfect match for php. i got no php problem when using php on them. for me, apache+php+mysql is the best webserver system ever!.
secondly, as far as windows is concerned, apache binary is easily transportable into another server or system. what you'll need to do is only to reinstall the service with the command;

apache -k install

then click run. this is because apache dont rely on any registry key settings or any special shared dlls. but of course, you'll might need to reconfigure paths that stated in the httpd.conf. this really handy is you have customize your webserver and dont want to loose its setting.

Apache works the best for me too - and even more so if you're running it on Linux. Have you tried out MiniApache yet ?? That might help you get your test server running. It's compact and lightweight and runs with the PHP Mod on NT/2K. Very easy to configure it too - at least far less tedious than the full blown apache. You can grab it at: http://forums.xisto.com/no_longer_exists/ . It's worth a shot

I've just installed easyphp, http://www.easyphp.com/. It works really good. It uses apache and have all preconfigured.

Hi,Out of these few HTTP-Servers that I've tried does the only server that had satisfied my needs, Apache.I'm using XAMPP for Windows Version 1.4.4 suite, and it contains the most tools you're needed for making PHP sites, include Apache, PhpMyAdmin, MySQL, Pearl, Python, Webalizer, Mercury Mail, FileZilla FTP etc.For all beginners can I recommand this warmly.Cheers!Jens

Out of these few HTTP-Servers that I've tried does the only server that had satisfied my needs, Apache.

 

I'm using XAMPP for Windows Version 1.4.4 suite, and it contains the most tools you're needed for making PHP sites, include Apache, PhpMyAdmin, MySQL, Pearl, Python, Webalizer, Mercury Mail, FileZilla FTP etc.

 

For all beginners can I recommand this warmly.

Yeah I tried that but I got some configuration problems and it didn't give me a panel to configure it or anything...And when I tried to setup a virtual host it didn't work at all...It seemed really awesome though N I plan on trying it l8r on but for now im checking through sourceforge for projects

look... as far as i see it.. i don't think its a problem with the server software.. i guess its a problem with your php installation... or else.. all servers can't fail like this.. better go to php.net or phpfreaks.com and post the problem there.

I've only heard of Apache and IIS from all of those.I would recommend Apache since it is pretty good. I haven't tried IIS though, in Windows 98 it was called PWS (Personal Web Server) and it was not that good.I would also recommend using XAMPP (on Windows) or LAMPP (on Linux). It is much easier to configure this way. However on Windows you may not want to use the WinMyAdmin thing for the MySQL database, I find it difficult, intrusive and unstable.

So far I've only used IIS (the Windows Server 2003 version, because the 2008 version is a lot different to manage) and Apache and I do prefer Apache over IIS. Both work well, but Apache works on any platform, has no problems with php (took me a lot longer to configure PHP in IIS than in Apache) and works even better with mysql. IIS is great for Silverlight/ASP.net apps, MS SQL servers and other Microsoft technoloies, but atm I'm not using any of those so I'm quite happy with Apache.I rather not use anything else but Apache or IIS because those are the best and most developed so I can use them without getting too many errors, big changes or crappy looking website because the engine is broken

I have only worked with Apache. Its the best product in the web servers category. Everyone knows it. I tried IIS once when I was a beginner. I didn't use it, because I code in PHP, and Apache is the best one for this. About other ones, even though they are not used by many, but there are some companies who have adopted those servers and may be for that reason they are still in development and used.

 

As this thread "HTTP Servers" lists many of the servers, may be an update about thier usage would be nice, so here it is: Apache as of April 2009 has a market share of 45.95% website, that is 106,368,727 sites running Apache. This graph highlights the details:

The latest entrant into this market is Google Web Server (GWS) which is being used in all of its websites and services like blogger, google groups etc. Its the modified version of Apache. Note that GWS has not been released to public.

 

There are two other servers which have popped out recently, one is QZHTTP (running millions of chinese websites under qzone.qq.com) and the other one nginx (from russia).

Some facts about QZHTTP:

It is a proprietary web server developed by Tencent.

QZHTTP is not QHTTPD.

It entered into the market with a bang shaking the regular monthly survey results of netcraft.

Its a chinese only technology with no downloads as such in English, probably it will never be so.

In the month of February, when this was released, there were only three domains running those millions of subdomains under it.
