3 Dimensional Desktops

Recommended Posts

Sun has been doing some pretty amazing things... Though it is a massive corporation, it still maintains a really forwards looking aproach to software developement and an interest in the developement community.

Anyways, they started something called Project Looking Glass, which is an attempt to make the desktop 3 dimentional. Currently they have proof-of-concepts for Linux and their own OS. And they've released a linux boot disc to demostrate it.

It looks awesome...I think it will be a huge step forward for computers. If the desktop can be made into a 3D setting, it will make navigating through multiple windows much easier, as well as influence the creation of new software that could use it's effects to the maximum ability.

Here's the movie demo at https://www.oracle.com/sun/index.html ^_^

There was a discussion about this not too long ago.it LOOKS pretty, but it takes 5 times longer to organise your disktop.there are too many awkward features that you dont need.beeing able to fold windows is a good feature, but rotating them around the z axis is pointless.. (unless your eyes are fitten sideways :) )i used this desktop for about a week before running back to my beloved KDE.

Anyway heard of SphereXP, makes your desktop a ball-shaped one, with you in the center.... I got lost after a few minutes and it quite sucks *bottom* :).2D is more easier to work with I think, because field of view of monitors are relatively small compared to the human eyes

Actually that looks a lot better, spinning a video to a note and viewing webpages from behind and well wow, that was cool. And he was right about the one dominant company needing a good shake.

Doesn't it require a lot of space to get that thingie going? I'm afraid so...

Of course it does....
But when windows 3.1 come out, one of it's requirements was a video card, that for those times was too much technology.

Same thing would happen here, one of the system requiremnts should be a 3d Graphics Card with a very good GPU (like the ones now, GeForce 7000 serires)

I think Mac computers can handle more ths kind of 3D OS, because their OS are fully rich graphics, more tah Microsoft ones.

Eventhough isn't as 3D as I expected when I read the topic....

Wow. That is very cool! I wonder how far away we are from desktops like the one seen in the movie, Paycheck?

The SphereXP is indeed available and is really quite fun to use. Try it out at http://www.hamar.sk/sphere/

I've been using it for quite a while now and I really like it. It's a great little toy, despite being underpowered for most tasks.
