Hmm... *wondering why no one posted Nero*

Best cd burning software ever. Nero

<{POST_SNAPBACK}>

As someone else has already pointed Nero although bundled with many CD / DVD writers now-a-days isn't freeware. Alng the same line, I don't think the same can be said of FlashGet that has been posted in this thread earlier.

In any case, I'd like to point out a completely free (albeit donationware) utility called

Startup Control Panel . It's small light and is compatible with all flavours of Windows. Also, unlike msconfig, there are no annoying reminders on the next boot-up.

It allows you to easily configure which programs run when your computer starts. That's it!

Although this isn't free software, it's an extremely useful site

Calendar Of Updates

It's a calendar that lists updates for a wide variety of software as it becomes available or as per a pre-determined schedule. A must for the security conscious geek and the wide-eyed newbie.

RSS feed here

Membership is NOT required to view the calendar.

Virtual Dub: A great program for video capture. It can acctually capture straight to DivX format. Its also a sourceforge.net project so it's completely open source as well, which is a nice bonus if you know how to program. Of course, you have to have a video capture device on the computer.

http://www.virtualdub.org/

Mozilla Thunderbird: I saw people mention it, but for those who aren't sure what it is, it's simply an alternative to OE or Outlook, as well as being completely open source like Firefox.

https://www.mozilla.org/en-US/

Red Hat Fedora Linux Yet another open source alternative. This operating system is acctually programmed by people like you and me, even though the final editors say does go to the guys at Red Hat, theyve been doing great work for years and it seems to work out ok. There is a little bit of a learning curve, especially if your a windows veteran, but with a little bit of time and patience youll be able to sort it out in no time. Unfortunately, not everything will work on linux, but most people are definetly seeing linux as a more serious alternative, and consequently develop a linux version of their software. While I personally have had issues with installing Fedora Core 3, I am currently using Core 2, and have no complaints.

Whoever mentioned Skype as a good program, I second the nomination. I can make long distance calls across the country and overseas, without having to pay any outrageous long distance bills. Plus, the quality is excellent. Sometimes feedback is a problem, but this can be solved by using headphones instead of running the audio through your speakers.Another free program that I like is Finale Notepad, if you're into composing music. It does require that you sign up on their website, and once in a while they may send promotional emails, but I've found these to be few and far between. I sometimes download sheet music from websites, and this program is convenient for playing a song through for me to determine if I want to print it out and learn to play it. Also, on the few occasions that I do compose music, it's much faster than writing it out by hand.

I have a couple of suggestions:

I would like to nominate Startup Control Panel again: http://www.mlin.net/
This is the best program to view and edit which programs startup when your computer boots. It shows a list box for HKCU (Current User), HKLM (Local Machine), User, Common (Everybody), and Run Once. It also shows the name, command line, and icon of each program. When you delete an item it is moved to the deleted tab, then from there you can completely remove it.

There is also four tools from http://www.freshdevices.com/ that are very helpful:

FreshUI - Edit hidden windows settings. (Very Useful - Descriptions for every setting!)

FreshDownload - I would have to say this is the best download manager. Turn the connections up to 8 per download if your on a high speed connection to double download speeds from slow sites!

FreshView - A nice photo viewer, you can also watch movies and listen to audio through it. Has a nice feature to compile selected images into an html photo gallery.

FreshDiagnose - This program is like MSInfo and DXDiag, but tells you way more about the hardware/software on your computer. It also has a bookmarking feature to really test the speed of your hardware! This program also can compile a full html report of everything you see about your computer.

All these programs require a free registration sent to you via e-mail. They do not give away your e-mail address to anyone, all they do is send you an e-mail whenever they release a new version of one of their programs.

Eclipse 3.0-http://www.eclipse.org/: An extremely powerful open source code editor for all of you programmers out there. It can be used with almost any language provided you get the right plugins and what not for it. IMO much better than any microsoft product of its kind

Firefox - duh.

DVD Decryptor - A great way to back up DVD's onto your computer It breaks pretty much encryption and can rewrite region codes so you can play burned copies of your foriegn DVDs on your regular DVD player

DVD Shrink - can turn DVD9 sized DVD's into a DVD5 sized file and burn it onto a DVD-R. go to http://www.doom9.org/ for any more on any of the DVD software I've mentioned

Daemon Tools - creates virtual drives...very useful for image files from DVD's or CD's

Amaya - This is a freeware alternative to Dreamweaver. It is a WYSIWYG editor, meaning that What You See in the editor Is What You Get in the browser, just like Dreamweaver's Developer Mode.

Pricelessware.com Nothing but a giant list of useful free software. A definate must see site for free stuff.

Sweet free games: The Marathon Trilogy from Bungie. These were originally Mac games but there's an open source advanced port of the engine and Bungie (now busy with Halo and stuff) and bucked the traditions of their corporate parent Micro$soft and released the game data more or less for free (if only iD would do the same thing for Doom 1/2, Quake 1/2...)

The games themselves are the precursors to Halo, and take place in roughly the same world. If you're looking for good, fun FPS action to keep you occupied on Mac, Windows or Linux, this is it...
