What Are: Service Ports?

Recommended Posts

Service Ports

The IP address acts as a unique identifier for a computer connected to the internet. Using it, computers send data to each other. Internet is a type of network. In addition to the IP address of the remote system, an application also needs to know how to address the specific program that it wishes to communicate with. This is accomplished by specifying a service port, a 16-bit number that uniquely identifies an application running on the system. Instead of numbers, however, service names are usually used instead. Like hostnames, service names are usually matched to port numbers through a local file, commonly called services. This file lists the logical service name, followed by the port number and protocol used by the server. Cpanel : The Webhosting service provided by us has its own communication port which can be accessed by typing http://www.sitename.com/cpanel or sitename.com:portnumber.

The Default port for communication on the internet is port 80.

============================================

Since Opaque started off with a good intro - I'll just add in a complete list of TCP/IP Service Ports (standardized by the IANA) for your future reference. Here goes:

Common Ports

This file was taken from the IANA website. It is a list of the well known port numbers.

# /etc/services:

# $Id: services,v 1.4 1997/05/20 19:41:21 tobias Exp $

#

# Network services, Internet style

#

# Note that it is presently the policy of IANA to assign a single well-known

# port number for both TCP and UDP; hence, most entries here have two entries

# even if the protocol doesn't support UDP operations.

# Updated from RFC 1700, ``Assigned Numbers'' (October 1994).  Not all ports

# are included, only the more common ones.

# From ``Assigned Numbers'':

#> The Registered Ports are not controlled by the IANA and on most systems

#> Ports are used in the TCP [45,106] to name the ends of logical

#> connections which carry long term conversations.  For the purpose of

#> providing services to unknown callers, a service contact port is

#> defined.  This list specifies the port used by the server process as its

What is the port for AIM and instant messengars alike. They have been banned for using them in the library but student still sneak them behind them behind our backs but if we block the port our worries are over. Can any one help with this probleme.

Bchs, if the computers are using Windows XP, then you can just use the ICF(Internet Connection Firewall), otherwise you can just download a free firewall and block the ports you want to block....And about the port for AIM thing...If you have ZoneAlarm Pro or Security Suite, you will notice that it changes port number constantly every time it tries to connect...But if you use ZoneAlarm Pro or Security Suite, you can block access to the internet to selected programs...

I don't know much about those, but Currently , I am using Windows XP w/ Service Pack 2 and it usually asks me to unblock or Block a port whenever it encounters any such things. For some applications, I unblocked the port and they are all running successfully. For messengers, I recommend GAIM. It can connect to everything simultaneously.

Ports used by instant messengers:Msn Messenger: 6891 (but port 1863 is used to log on)ICQ: 5190Yahoo: 5050 (port 80 used sometimes)these are the only ones i know since i don't use any others. yahoo messenger would be pretty hard to block on a firewall since you can configure it to use port 80 (standard www port)oh, by the way for OpaQue: the port for cPanel is 2082 (or 2083 for https access)

I think an easier way to block them is redirect msg.dcn.yahoo.com to 127.0.0.1

could use HOSTS file. or restrict msg.dcn.yahoo.com using a proxy server.

The Default port for communication on the internet is port 80.

80 is the default port for http. So to be accurate it is the default port of unsecured www. It is the port where webservers are usually configured to.

Other typical default ports are for example 21 for FTP, 22 for SSH, 23 for Telnet and 6667 for IRC.

ok is there any way that i can like change my default transfer port 80 to some other port ? and can i simultaneasly send files via MSN and YAhoo meessengeer casue they both use defaullt 80 port

Change the default port of what?

And I doubt that both MSN and Yahoo will work if they are using port 80.
