Something I'd Just Like To Share

Recommended Posts

I have decided to post this because I find it kind of, in a weird way, funny. (note to mods: feel free to move this if you find necessary)

Here is some math you may need to know. 1GB (GigaByte) = 1,024MB (MegaByte). So 1024MB/1GB = 1GB/1024MB = 1. And x/y/z = (1/x)*(1/y)*(1/z).

Why am I telling you this? Well I have decided to copy 385GB of music from one USB HDD to another. Using USB 3.0 standards, the current data transfer rate is 4.47MBps (MegaBytes per second, or MB/s). This tells us that if we divide 385GB by 4.47MB/s, our answer will be in seconds. So much of them, in fact, that Google Calculator went ahead and converted them into days. 1.076 of them, actually. Before I went to bed, it was estimated to take 8.5 hours.

*MID-POST UPDATE*

the transfer rate increased to 4.96MBps and Windows estimates it'd take 5 hours and 15 minutes. But I need to cancel it.

I don't do a lot of downloading anymore, but it's nice to know that there is a way to estimate the time it takes if you were ever on some kind of deadline and had to have it done. Of course, math is not my strong point so I probably couldn't figure it out anyway. I wouldn't even know how to start to find out what my download speed was, let alone to all the other figuring. But hey! At least you posted something! And around here lately, that's at least something positive. So feel free to rattle on about anything that pops into your mind. I know I do!

Without a lot of math, you can get an approximate time that your download would take. Ignore the decimal places and do all your unit conversions with 10. For instance, if you have to download a 1MB (megabyte) file and you have a 1Mbps (megabit) connection, it would under roughly 10 seconds because of the difference in the units of measurement (think centimeters and millimeters) and a slight overhead because of the network protocols.A 700MB CD would therefore take under 7,000 seconds over a 1Mbps connection. For the conversion to minutes, take off 2 zeros and round off the number to the next half hour - 70 is over an hour but under an hour and a half so we round it off to 90 minutes. With more accurate Math, 700MB is 5600Mb (megabytes to megabits) and we divide that by 60 to get minutes for transfer over a 1Mbps connection, so it takes 93 minutes. This may be a best case when the time difference between the accurate and ballpark time is only 3 minutes. Depending on the numbers, the difference would be a bit more though it shouldn't matter unless you are setting your microwave timer.
