mrdee 1 Report post Posted December 31, 2012 I would like to wish everyone on this forum (although I am a bit early in my Timezone) a very happy and prosperous 2013.Hope it may be a year filled with happiness, good health love and friendship (no use wishing you any money, you only have to give it to the tax man anyway) for every one of you.I personally am ending what has been a terrible year for me (struggling with my health and the financial problems that flow from that, lots of stress and uncertainties, people letting me down, about anything that possibly could go wrong did). One positive thing I will be taking with me into the new year is that I will have been a non-smoker for six months in two days' time.At least that is something positive (although it is not always easy and the urge sometimes raises its head still). All I wish to others, I would obviously like for myself, so I am hoping for a year in which things work out better for me than they have that whole cursed year 2012 (I sometimes wonder if anyone has cursed me, because it sure looks like that).I only hope I have the strength and energy, and also the physical capacity to be artistic again, and to do what I love doing without being stopped from doing so by ill health or other reasons that could possibly stop me from doing my usual thing. And this, my friends, i would like to wish to every single one of you, may 2013 make you forget all the troubles you had in the past and bring you joy, good health and happiness for all the time to come. mrdee 1 Report post Posted January 2, 2013 Don't worry about being 'late', c4l.Where I come from, people say "It is New Year the whole month long".That 'whole month' obviously refers to January, and what they say about being New Year for the whole of January means that you can wish people a Happy New Year for the whole of January, send out greeting cards for the same amount of time, also, many companies or political parties have their New Year reception for their employees or members in late January. You can also go and visit friends and family for a New Year get together throughout January, I remember joking with a pub landlord one New Year's day, he mentioned about it being New Year for the whole month, and I replied "so, does that mean we have to stay here until the end of January? I can just imagine us sat here with a long beard", to which he replied "Yes, and covered in dust and cobwebs".Come to think of it, that wouldn't be such a bad idea of puting the 'whole month principle' into practice.Come on then! Off to the pub until February 1st.

sheepdog 10 Report post Posted January 7, 2013 Yes, I'm late to this party too! Like a week, lol. I am sorry to hear you've had such a bad year this past year. Mine was a bit rough too, though probably not as bad as yours. I did certainly have the health problems, and now with the hospital bill the financial problems that go along with that. But I['m ok now I suppose. Wish I could join you in the non smoking catagory. How the heck did you manage that? That is one super hard habit to break.Wishing everyone here the very best in 2013! In regards to your question about stopping smoking, I know of many people who used to be heavy smokers and went to e-cigs (the electronic ones) and either cut back significantly or quit altogether. I think it's definitely worth looking into!
mrdee 1 Report post Posted January 7, 2013 Well, it seems like some people do find help and salvation in the E-cigarettes, but apparently they cause their own problems. When I find the link to that article I shall post it here. Also, like most other Nicotine Replacement Therapy (NRT) products they do contain nicotine, granted, that is exactly the main addictive element in cigarettes, which is why many people try the NRT way in order to wean them off the nicotine gradually. The funny thing is, and, I do not know whether or not it was related, but when I started with nicotine patches and gave up eleven years ago, that same very night I got into an ambulance having had a heart attack. At that time I kept it up for five months, and stress, worry and similar things made me grab for those cigarettes again.I know that many specialists and/or non-smokers will now claim that is a weak excuse, however, cigarettes do give a (false, I admit) sense of relaxation, and it does feel like lighting up pushes the stress away (or, at least they give you that feeling). Then later I kept it up for two months, I started off with Nicotine lozenges, but after a day or so, I just forgot about them and carried on without them and without cigarettes. Once again I fell back into my old habit due to the same reason. However, I do remember an attempt when I was much younger, in my twenties, I believe, and when everyone said to me "would you please, please go and buy yourself a packet of cigarettes and light one, because you are impossible to live with or be around".My goodness, was I irritable then, biting people's heads off for nothing and the like, I only kept it up for a fortniht then. However, the day after new year, it has ben six months now since I have beaten (or ar least, so it seems, as you will read a bit further on) the habit, just on "cold turkey". I was having breathing problems and I just said I wanted this problem to get better, so I gave up.However, now it seems that my problem was not, or only remotely related to smoking, which I will not use as an excuse to start again. So, with my six months, it has been the longest I have ever managed, but I must admit, sometimes I get crazy feeling like lighting a cigarette, and, hard as it is, i have managed until now.People keep saying to give it time, so I am waiting to see when that craving will go completely. sheepdog 10 Report post Posted January 12, 2013 I actually purchased one of the e-cigs, and I think that it is probably a good tool that would be helpful, at least in my personal situation. The problem I ran into with it was that I could not get one with menthol flavor, so the one I have doesn't taste all that great, though it's not too bad. I think it would be more likeable if I can ever find the menthol refils for it to try at least. The e-cigs have several good things going for them. They deal with several parts of the ciggerette addiction, not just the addiction to nicotine. Although they are much heavier than a real smoke, it gives you some thing to have in your hand to "fiddle" with. A good part of the time we smoke because we need somthing to do. Waiting on a computer page to load is my biggest problem, I can pick up a smoke before I even realize I've done it. You puff on it like a real smoke, and the end of it even lights up like the fire in a real ciggerette gets when you smoke on it and get the fire going by inhaling. Another nice thing is you can take a couple puffs and just set it back down, it's not like you would do with real smoke, you ususally finish one if you light it, though not always of course. And sometimes when you are trying really hard to cut down, but you just have this uncontrolable urge for a smoke, a few simple puffs on an e cig can satisfy that god awful craving.
